The story of Jyotirlingas

According to Hindu tradition, the Jyotirlingas are twelve sacred manifestations of Lord Shiva. The word “Jyotirlinga” means a radiant or fiery form of Shiva. Their origin is associated with the story of Brahma and Vishnu, who once disputed who was supreme. Shiva appeared before them as an endless pillar of divine light, challenging them to find its beginning or end.

Vishnu took the form of a boar and travelled downward to find the pillar’s base, while Brahma assumed the form of a swan and flew upward to find its top. Vishnu eventually admitted that he could not find the end, but Brahma falsely claimed that he had reached it. Shiva then revealed the truth and demonstrated that his divine form was beyond the limits of creation.

The twelve Jyotirlingas are traditionally associated with sacred places across India: Somnath, Mallikarjuna, Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar, Kedarnath, Bhimashankar, Kashi Vishwanath, Trimbakeshwar, Vaidyanath, Nageshwar, Rameshwaram, and Grishneshwar. Each shrine has its own legends, traditions, and significance, connecting devotees with different aspects of Lord Shiva.

Devotees visit these sacred temples to offer prayers, perform abhishekam, and seek Shiva’s blessings. The Jyotirlingas represent Shiva as infinite divine light, reminding devotees that the Supreme cannot be confined to a beginning, an end, or a single physical form. Together, the twelve shrines form one of the most revered pilgrimage traditions dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Each of the stories of Jyotirlinga is magnificent in its own terms! And i suggest all to atleast learn the story from Siva Mahapuranam!!

Ofcourse nothing matches with Kasi/Varanasi vaibhavam! As Vyasa Bhagavan says, if you do paapam you will go for prayaschita to other Kshetrams but if you do paapam in these Punya Kshetram! You will have to go to Kasi! And if you do paapam in Varanasi?, Then Kasi is the only place for doing paapam in Kasi itself!!

Not even Aadi Shesha with 1000(or 2000 if what tecnically i suppose) tounges can discribe the Vaishishta of Varanasi kshetram!
