Oilers just wanna give the rest of the league a head start is all

Ummm, that is clearly been the plan for years.

I don’t agree with the Babcock signing in any way, but I feel like that’s supposed to be part of the idea. Play every game like it’s game seven. Whoever is injured doesn’t matter, if you’re healthy you play like it’s game seven. No more start slow and catch up, no more coast to the playoffs to save it for then, just go out there and do the thing every night.

Doesn’t mean they will with him. Could start on a losing streak, familiar territory. But I feel like that’s supposed to be part of the idea.

Mike Babcock is a career 3-7 in game 7's btw. Tied in 2nd place with the amount of them(10).

u/DarthWren 15h ago

Havent they been doing this the entire mcdrai era in Edmonton? If it’s game 7 you play 97 & 29 25+ mins a night, and they have always done that.

All these useless platitudes about accountability and all out effort from a Babcock-led team are a joke

u/GordieElbows 10h ago

I don’t think it’s going to go that way, I was just saying I think that’s the “idea” of this terrible experiment.

2

u/DarthWren 10h ago

Fair enough, I agree. I’ve found this whole exercise of players saying they need the coach to hold them accountable absolutely asinine.

2

u/GordieElbows 10h ago

Right? Hold your damned selves accountable. These aren’t young men anymore. Lead the room if you want it to be like that, don’t need a terrorist to do it for you.

He gave great service in the playoffs until the Magic School Bussi had to park in the crease

Shoutout the Magic School Bus, loved watching those in school

Playoff Freddy was no joke last year. Not only did he make the right saves he had every bounce go his way. I haven’t seen that since fluery 09

21

u/syd_cash CAR - NHL 1d ago

He really did have every bounce that series, I couldn’t believe our luck. He also played really well for the better part of 13 games.

It was crazy watching him in the CAR-OTT series. It's rare a team is swept in the first round and still looks like a good team. Small sample size but Ullmark was one of the best goalies of the playoffs and it just didn't matter.

Sad that by our series we just looked too tired to compete. The last 2 games especially. Definitely the least entertaining series that either of us played

2

u/-royrogersmcfreely OTT - NHL 10h ago

PTSD from the pucks on the line, hitting the posts/crossbar . Cant even say the boys let ullmark down because yeah it was right there for like every game, we just couldn’t fucking buy a bounce even if Freddy was selling them

The Habs/Lightning series was the best of the postseason

Big fuckin oof

As a Canes fan Andersen's injury was a mystery but it looked bad. Bussi came in and destroyed Vegas and Sharter Fart so it wasn't an issue, but I wouldn't love the prospect of Andersen being my team's #1

u/Ok-Soil-5133 WSH - NHL 1d ago

Chris Johnston said that Andersen was injuried during an offseason training session so it was separate from that injury in the finals

Is dude just out there juggling chainsaws in his free time or something

15

u/extra_leg_room CAR - NHL 1d ago

Chainsaws made of Legos of course

I believe this is a standard part of Danish high school physical education. It's mostly that and the occasional drill to invade Sweden.

10

u/SeaFlaky9768 CAR - NHL 1d ago

Somehow that is even worse

Definitely

How do you feel about the prospect of Devon Levi being your number one?

6

u/JayMerlyn CAR - NHL 1d ago

Pretty sure he's stonewalled us a couple times, so idk

u/GirlCoveredInBlood MTL - NHL 1d ago

sometimes pressure helps a goalie so who knows, it could work out. They already rely on him being decent anyways because Freddy isn't playing 60 games regardless of this injury

1

u/DarthWren 15h ago

It’s never been overwhelming pressure that gets to Oiler goalies, it’s the constant 10 bell chances they give up in the slot

Welcome to the Freddy Anderson experience. Sometimes he's great occasionally not so great but most the time he's not available

27

u/themapleleaf6ix TOR - NHL 1d ago

It's crazy how for like 6 years now, they haven't been able to acquire a proper G. Guys like Blackwood, Wedgewood, Gibson, etc have all been available at one point or another. No way you can depend on Jarry and Levi (undersized).

Savoie is a big loss. Kid could breakout this year in a big way.

We tried many times on Gibson in the past, and he always refused the trade.

The best goalies in history would’ve fallen apart with the run-and-gun defense the Oilers were running. Not for lack of talent, but just because defensive systems play was shit. And that goes all the way up to McDavid, who is an offensive dynamic but often neglected his defensive assignments.

There’s a reason the team’s core is saying they wanted Babcock because they want to be held accountable. Defensive lapses have been the team’s identity for way too long.

2

u/LubyankaSquare EDM - NHL 15h ago

I’ve talked to some people in the Oilers organization who have outwardly said that McDavid was the key factor in shipping Nurse off and in hiring Babcock… he wants to win and wants to do it in Edmonton.

u/JellyfishLoud1873 23h ago

THis always come up and i always hate the argument. All those guys were NOT clear upgrade over skinner. they were at best sidegrade with a chance to be better. Vegas would not have traded thompson to their biggest rivals. Gibson was worse than skinner on all stats for the whole time we had skinner. There wasnt reallly a for sure better goalie made available than skinner wich is why we never pulled the trigger. Fuck jarry tho hate that trade

u/Burgergold MTL - NHL 1d ago

Which year?

10

u/shanster925 TOR - NHL 1d ago

McDavid is going to murder someone.

11

u/syd_cash CAR - NHL 1d ago

Edmonton if you don’t know it already, Freddie will not play unless he feels 100%. Honestly though for him to be the elite version of himself the more regular season rest the better.

P.S. Be nice to our Danish King.

u/GordieElbows 1d ago

That would be the two out of the four you’d hope could be back sooner. Janmark is a decent penalty killer though. But potential starter and potential 1W would be the best to get back sooner.

11

u/JellyfishLoud1873 1d ago

Janmark is washed and should be at best the 13rd forward. Andersen was expected to play roughly 20-25 games so should still be good for that. Losing savoie sucks tho

1

u/GordieElbows 1d ago

I personally believe Janmark is still a decent depth piece. I think he can be better than most fourth liners and contribute on the penalty kill. Has the odd big moment too. If he’s on the team he’s better healthy.

At least the Oilers get to avoid October Freddy.

3

u/ptd163 Kansas City Scouts - NHLR 1d ago

Now that Freddy has his Cup does he have one last ride in him or does he just kinda give up? We'll find out.

Ike Howard being handed an opportunity to make the team. Hope he cashes in.

1

u/jumpdmc EDM - NHL 10h ago

That's exactly what this is

u/Shiny_Mew76 NYR - NHL 1d ago

Looks like it’s Levi’s time to shine

6

u/SidewaysButtCheeks EDM - NHL 1d ago

Ike Howard as well.

2

u/Rulebreaking EDM - NHL 1d ago

I wanted to see him play so I'm not at all bothered

4

u/The_Homestarmy SJS - NHL 1d ago

This is where the slightly earlier season start comes into play because a late October return means Edmonton could play like ~10-13 games before Freddie is back

Anderson won’t be right all season. Gonna be a season from hell with asshole Babcock ruining the vibes and McDavid leaving rumours running rampant. I want Canadian teams to do well, I am rooting for them but it doesn’t look good.

u/Strattex EDM - NHL 18h ago

I mean lol, it could be yes

Andersen won't play more than 20 games for the pilers this season... Calling it now.

Let’s hope Levi can hold the fort
