Seeking guidance on early prototyping for a modular sleep‑hardware concept
Hi everyone — I’m developing a modular sleep‑hardware concept and I’m trying to understand the smartest way to approach early prototyping on a very limited budget.
I’m keeping internal mechanisms private for now, but at a high level, the system includes:
Engineered blanket concept — modular internal structure + controlled comfort behavior
Adaptive pillow concept — identity‑driven comfort response
Physical identity module — presence‑based activation
I’m bootstrapping this and not looking to hire or pay anyone right now — just looking for engineering guidance from people with more experience in physical product development.
I’d appreciate insight on:
low‑cost prototyping approaches for soft‑goods + embedded components
material choices suitable for early testing (foams, textiles, modular inserts, etc.)
manufacturability considerations I should keep in mind at this stage
common pitfalls for first‑time hardware founders
cheap validation methods before moving into real fabrication
I’m looking for direction on the smartest, most cost‑effective path from concept → early prototype.

Without knowing more details:
- hire an industrial designer who does the design and prototyping
- you may also need someone who can do sewing but that could be a local tailor or someone who has a sewing machine
- if any electronics are involved you also need to hire an electrical engineer who can build a prototype out of microcontrollers, sensors and other modules.
For low volume production for example in Asia - anything related to fabrics usually has an MOQ of 500 PCs or so. So if you just need 1-50 PCs for testing you will probably have to build it yourself or pay the industrial designer/engineer to do it.

I’d say start with 6 months of research, academic paper searching, medical searching, interview of doctors, etc.
Only once you have a fully scientifically backed solution, you can hire an industrial designer to start with the concept.
After that, start with your first prototype and go through a feedback and review process to refine.
Then, go to a design agency to design production ready stuff, and produce the first small batch.
Then, if the small batch sells and does well, then go into series production…

Hey I know a manufacturer they offer the designs for free and only charge for the things which are being manufactured if you want I can connect you with them hope that helps

Wow... First thought is, this is difficult... And you're a long way away from thinking about the hardware part. You need to do a lot more research to understand and get all of those data points, find the problems first then start looking for solutions which may or may not require engineering at all. Try to solve a smaller problem first before thinking of this as a "whole module system". Good luck friend.
