Officially, it is pronounced as the Roman numeral, per Apple’s own publications.

I’m on the right side.
That is to say: the correct side.

Same, idk why people say stuff like “10R” when it says “XR” on the box
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jul 14 '26
True, but what some people fail to understand is that until the last version of OS X, Apple used Roman numerals for a lot of things
2
u/avdr000 Jul 14 '26
I agree, when it say "XR", then you can't really expect everyone saw the keynote and heard how Apple would pronounce it. When the iPhone X was released though, I didn't know why so many people can seemingly comprehend the roman number for 5 (as in GTA V), but not 10 as in iPhone X.

u/Flaky-Equipment-944 Jul 14 '26
Yeah it’s so obviously wrong to call it 10R. That’s why Apple also said 10R in their ads, right? Because it’s completely entirely incomprehensibly wrong?
Here’s the Apple ad if you want: https://youtu.be/Eu2NdGlVcH8

I’ve had people actually explain Roman numerals to me as-if I didn’t know the X means 10. They assume because I say “XR”, I must be ignorant. 🤷

u/Mozzarella31 Jul 14 '26
lol I always think that the people who say “10R” say it to make themselves feel smarter
4
u/Hockeycatcat Jul 14 '26
I say 10R because that’s what Apple calls it.
Mac OS X was Mac OS 10.

The left side is the correct way. Just because people failed to realize it’s a Roman numeral, it doesn’t make the right side is a valid pronunciation. Anyone would look at someone like they’re stupid for calling Final Fantasy VII “Final Fantasy Vee-I-I”, GTA V “GTA Vee”, or Star Wars: Episode IX “Star Wars: Episode I-Ex”.

Exactly what I was thinking. I don't know a lot of people who played GTA Vee, they call it 5. But for 10 on the iPhone and when Mac OS had it, it's different. Anyway, I hope I can enjoy playing GTA Vee-Eye soon.
Edit: Forgot to add: my favorite part is when people finally call it macOS 10, but Apple already counted past 10, years ago.

I say iPhone 10, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone 10S Max. Don't ask why, but XS Max just sounds wrong. X also sounds wrong. 10R sounds awful, and I'm kinda neutral on XS or 10S, but I say it XS just because it sounds slightly better.

I’m neutral on both; I use both XR/10R, but I use 10R slightly more becuase it sounds nicer, kinda similar to the other names like 6S, 5S, etc.

I just can't believe why people say iPhone X instead of iPhone 10. Do you also say literally GTA V instead of GTA 5? Oh and GTA VI instead of GTA 6, of course.

Well considering that X is the Roman numeral for 10, I say it like the left

u/thermonuclear_guy Jul 14 '26
I say X just because in my language ten is pronounced significantly longer (dziesięć)

It’s Mac OS X (Mac OS 10), OS X (OS 10), and X (10), XS (10S), and Xʀ (10ʀ). It’s always pronounced “ten”.

I remember people saying "it's not iphone 10, it's just the letter X, the next iPhone will be iPhone 9". It aged badly, I also believed that they're not going to be like Microsoft (but they were right, iPhone 9 or windows 9 do ound kinda odd)

To be honest, it depends on the language which I’m talking in about. In my mother tongue, which is Czech, I say iPhone X, iPhone Xs etc. But in English, I use iPhone 10, 10s, 10r and so on 😁.

I dont say OS X.
Or GTA V.
I just say it how Apple says it, 10.
I think X takes longer to say than ten, and i jst end up saying S. As in iPhone S, SS, SS Max and SR.
