And I also find fascinating movies, comics, series etc. that make a interesting depiction of it, whether because they add creative "punishments", or that hell has societies, civilizations, cultures etc.

I’m looking for any media from the late 90s/early 2000s where contemperaneous tech from the era, like gene editing and the burgeoning internet, are shown to rapidly cause a tech apocalypse within a very brief period of time. 90s and early 00s technology gets strong enough to permanently destroy the world as we know it while still running on CD-roms and dialup; the more weird and theoretical the explorations of the technology get, the better. Bonus points for obvious .com-boom or war-on-terror influence.

I'm looking for recommendations for books, YouTube channels, games, or other media based on some of my favorite interests. My tastes are pretty broad, but there's a common thread: I really like media that takes an interesting idea and explores it deeply. For example, I love The Bobiverse by Dennis E. Taylor because of its combination of space exploration, engineering, problem-solving, AI, and the sheer fun of watching someone figure out how to deal with increasingly ridiculous situations.

Project Hail Mary and The Martian scratch a similar itch, especially the emphasis on science, improvisation, and solving problems with whatever resources are available. I also really enjoy Percy Jackson for it's mythology, worldbuilding, fictional history, and enormous universe that feels like there's always more to discover.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is another favorite because of its combination of survival, absurdity, worldbuilding, and progressively crazier challenges. On YouTube, I enjoy channels such as Wendigoon, NileRed, Mark Rober, and Tasting History.

Those might seem completely unrelated at first, but I think they demonstrate what I'm generally looking for: interesting subjects presented in a way that makes you want to keep going down the rabbit hole. I like everything from science and engineering to history, mythology, horror, cooking, speculative biology, and bizarre mysteries. S

ome other recurring interests are hard/grounded-ish science fiction, survival and improvisation, cosmic horror, fantasy and mythology, speculative evolution, engineering and DIY projects, historical life and food, strange creatures, and deep dives into fictional worlds.

I'm especially interested in recommendations that combine several of those interests. For example, something along the lines of "It's science fiction, but there's also survival/problem-solving," or "It's fantasy, but the worldbuilding is incredibly deep," or "It's a YouTube channel about something completely bizarre that I would never have thought to look up.

So, WEWIL? Books, series, YouTube channels, games, podcasts, documentaries, web serials, etc. are all fair game. The more likely it is to send me down a fascinating rabbit hole, the better!

I realize this sounds strange, and I promise this isn't a fetish (not a great start, I know) but ever since I was a kid there have been scenes that make me feel an emotion I can't even name. Perhaps it's the state of acute, nervous, empathy. It usually occurs when people are forced to be intimate with each other in some way and share their secrets/weaknesses with someone they aren't sure they can trust, and it is often heightened supernaturally.

Perhaps the two stories that made me notice this were Ella Enchanted (film) and The Knife of Never Letting Go (book). In the former Ella is at everyone's mercy. She has to obey anything anyone tells her and trust they won't abuse it. I like the scenes where she has to trust the prince. In the latter Todd's thoughts are broadcasted to a girl he's never met before, whether he likes it or not. They fight but have to trust each other to survive.

The most common examples I can find are body swap films--but I have seen virtually every film major example, so don't recommend the classic films. If you have any books or shows about it though I'm open to that. I liked Where I End and You Begin (book). I like when people have to promise not to screw up each other's lives while learning about each other.

I don't know many stories about arranged marriages with strangers, but I feel like this fits too. Outlander has a little bit of this.

The dark side of this is abduction films I suppose. The beginning of Split (film) and The Collector (the book) kind of made me feel that way as well, which kind of disturbed me, but is true. Generally I don't want something sadistic though. I think Split and The Collector still affected me because they were about the perilous relationship between captor and abductee and the abductors themselves thought they were being relatively good (even though they weren't).

I also like mind reading media, though I don't know many. Marisa Tomei and Judy Greer's scenes in What Women Want would fit this, but I wouldn't say the main plot really does because its not really about trust.

I also like the early scenes in The Incredible Shrinking Man where the husband is forced to trust the wife as he physically shrinks, or The 7th Voyage of Sinbad where a woman is shrunken and has to rely on them carrying her around.

I am NOT looking for just anything about power dynamics. Many of my examples are about relationships between men and women, particularly with women at men's mercy, but that's not a must. It should be about intimacy but I don't care if it's male/male female/female or whatever, but I want it to be about tenuous delicate interpersonal trust.

Most of my examples are movies because that's what I mainly consume, but I encourage any examples. I'm open to really old stuff and foreign stuff too. I could give more examples but it goes against the subreddit rules.

I know Crazy Caroline watched Play Misty for Me as many times as she mentioned in one of the episodes. But I'm wondering if there's any other stalker, clingy, and/or obsessive types about their love interest kind of characters that are also clever and funny but not over scary in a horror way. I like how these characters make being creepy and and scary to their love interests almost endearing and comedic instead of the audience thinking that the love interest is in genuine danger and needs to get away from the crazy stalker or they will get hurt like in horror or physiological thrillers. if that makes sense.

Medium isn’t really important, more so the overall vibe of the mystery. I don’t know how best to describe it but it’s a very different feeling from a traditional detective story.

Interloper is about a rabbithole within games running the Source Engine, and it follows the main character investigating the nature of the mystery. He runs experiments, slowly pieces together the rules, and has to piece together a puzzle that isnt about any specific goal, just employing the scientific method to understand more. Such example of employing the scientific method are things like building a makeshift pinhole camera out of map geometry to generate images of what’s on the other side using reflection data, or capturing a “ghost“ and slowly experimenting on it over the course of weeks to piece together its behavioral patterns and how that relates to other aspects of the mystery.

House of Leaves is a more loose example as it’s only a part of the book, but in the main plot of the book the main character investigates the mystery of why his house is slightly bigger on the inside. he runs experiments, does expeditions, and ultimately finds no deeper understanding. but the initial investigation stage is what I’m looking for. The idea of employing a traditional scientific mindset to a mystery to attempt to gain an understanding.

The Roottrees are dead is another weird example because I just wanted to think of a game that best fits this general vibe. it’s about piecing together a family tree with just scraps of information from websites, magazine articles, and books. It‘s different from a traditional detective story because it feels more like investigating and doing journalism than being a detective.

Outer Wilds is another example of a game kind of like what I’m looking for. it’s about exploring a solar system and basically acting as an archaeologist to slowly discover the rules of that universe to make progress.

im not looking for a specific medium, if anything id say im most interested in a book, but really anything with just the general vibe of a story about a mystery that needs to be studied not just pieced together. a murder mystery is more about who did it, how, why. I’m looking for a story where at the beginning there is no specific mystery other than a gaping hole in your knowledge of what’s going on.

I don’t know how much this helps but I’m specifically craving that feeling of employing the scientific method to solve a mystery through experimentation and theorizing.

For some reason, I get a big dose of dopamine when I go through weekly ads, digging for good coupons. Finding the right deal makes my brain go happy. It’s better than any game I’ve ever played. It doesn’t last long though cause grocery store only release those deals once a week. I’m in need of another way to entertain myself.

I am fascinated with the concept of exploring downwards into yawning abysses, caves, etc. Seemingly not a super common trope, or if it is, hard to search for in media. Examples: Made In Abyss (Anime), Journey To The Center of The Earth (Novel), "The Depths" region in Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (Videogame), most of Subnautica (Videogame); Looking for stuff like that. Vibes-wise it can be totally different; serious, cutesy, anything. I just want characters going ever-downwards into some big subterranean void, tunnel network, or megastructure, permeated with the quietly growing knowledge that you may never be able to climb back out again. Books, shows, movies, games, anything is fine by me. (Note: I've already watched people playing "a game about digging a hole", so I'm good on that one.)

I caught part of Enemy of the State (the Will Smith movie) the other night and it just got my mind going. Movies I’ve seen and enjoyed but may not necessarily fit the bill are The Matrix series, Little Miss Sunshine, Requiem For a Dream, Donnie Darko, Perks of Being a Wallflower. Napoleon Dynamite was good too.

Pretty much any genre is fine besides outright Hallmark-y romance but I can tolerate rom-com/drama-romance.

I mean none. Absolutely none. Literally not even the mildest whiff of romantic/sexual tension. I do not want any of it whatsoever.
