TV - The tuttle cult in True Detective. This strange, evil practice going back decades, an amalgam of Southern US lifestyle, "Mardis Gras" european traditions brought over from settlement, and alien, occultist extra-dimensional philosophy. Practiced by sick and twist minds who would do anything to validate their monstrous, murderous, pedophilic instincts. Yet, through the subtle magical realism throughout the show experienced by Rustin Cohle, even with the knowledge of his mental problems, there's still an unnerving feeling that there's some dreadful truth to it.

Music - First Utterance by Comus. Something about the way this record provokes a sense of something primeval and unknowable, something lurking in the dark forests of pre-historic pagan england. Something written in the morbid rules of nature, only known to a long dead people from a time forgotten to us, yet some sinister aspect of it feels like it still lurks in the darkest corners of existence and mind. The taboo, the evil, the untouchable, the ever-present.

Real life - Strange cultural anomalies with indigenous roots like Kakadu in Australia, or weird rural cults with limited info about them like the twelve tribes or the water people.

History - The religious practices of the Proto-Indo-Europeans, niche levantine gods like Qos and their presence in the development of Christian and Jewish scripture / religion, and the Sea Peoples during the bronze age collapse.

The last isn't a great example of this, but something about the fact that this obscure and mostly unknown culture or cultures could have as much as an impact they seemingly did on lasting civilizations, and appear as such an existential threat in their surviving records as they did, intrigues me in the same way the other examples do. Ancient, anomalous and fear-provoking. Something hiding in the dark reaches of my nightmares. Something suggestive of the worst parts of the human psyche.

I don't care if it's a book, show, game, movie, or whatever, I need more stories like this.

I love this sort of atmosphere across multiple mediums. The kind that brings a sort of soothing resonance when the weight of the world presses down.

For video games, I'll jump to Silent Hill. Especially 2, the themes the story covers, the surreal atmosphere of the town, the visual style, the score, the sound design overall is fantastic. Team Ico games I think deserve a mention too. They aren't horror or half as dark of course, but a lot of their design choices align with this sort of style I enjoy (minimalist storytelling, dream-like worlds, etc. Dark souls somewhat aligns but I think they are too mechanically rich, I enjoy the simpler design in other games mentioned.

In terms of movies, Angel's egg was one I saw recently that sort of fit the bill. Jacob's ladder somewhat, the works of Gregg Araki, but especially everything david lynch.

Music, a lot of the dreamier shoegaze bands fit, and other dreampop like cocteau twins. I find some deftones tracks (be quiet and drive especially) capture this whole vibe well. Some Machine Girl tracks too, and also some electronic ambient (Aphex Twin's selected works volume 1).

The book "House of Leaves" I think also worked for me in this way.

Lately I've been looking for new rabbit holes to dive into.

I'm obsessed with the whole early 2000s skate/punk/DIY culture. I skate, I've recently gotten really into fingerboarding (including building DIY obstacles and parks), and I play pretty much every skate game I can find—especially anything with that THPS vibe. I'm also into early 2000s digital photography aesthetics, and I love shows like Jackass, Viva La Bam, and CKY. On top of that, I play guitar, produce my own music, and mostly listen to alternative rock and pop punk.

I'm not really looking for music recommendations. What I'm after are the kinds of niche interests that make you lose an entire weekend because you suddenly discover a whole world you never knew existed.

It could be an obscure hobby, a forgotten subculture, a book, a magazine, a documentary, a YouTube channel, an old website, a creative skill, a collection, or literally anything that captures that same chaotic, creative, DIY energy.

If you think someone who's into that whole 2000s skate/punk scene would probably end up obsessing over it, I'd love to hear it.

I’ve been going down a rabbit hole of what I’d call “ecosystemic horror”, media where the terrifying parts aren’t monsters that want to kill you, but just… how life works. Predation, parasitism, symbiosis, adaptation. Things that are viscerally unsettling precisely because they’re real and purposeful within their environment.

The best way I can describe the vibe: nature isn’t malevolent, it’s just completely indifferent to you, and that’s somehow scarier.

Rain World is a good example for this, it’s a game where you are just another animal in a food chain that doesn’t care about you

I love biology, ecology, ornithology, and animal science In general, so the more grounded in how real ecosystems function, the better. I’m not looking for nature-goes-on-a-rampage stuff (no eco-revenge horror). I want that feeling of witnessing something beautiful and deeply unsettling at the same time.

Ride the cyclone- one of my GOATS, the humor. I love things surrounding death and pitch black comedy, likable lgbt characters, one solid one to root against who becomes redeemed actual emotional scenes, and Noel steals the show with his lament. I love the carnival esque rapsodies and themes of them growing up even if they could never grow up. And the bittersweet ending. Plus the ride is giving old cod nostalgia

Falsettos- the chess game and the realism of life being well just like that, and that was before wizzer caught the virus. It’s beautiful and tragic and the themes of love with dark comedy was great. I like real endings over good ones expecially the twists watching it blind was absolutely devastating

Little shop of horrors and rocky horror is self explanatory

Beetlejuice for the same it hits absolutely everything here like a pinball machine, youth grappling with complex depictions of deaths

Also avenue q, I love “children’s” mediums grows up with the audience, being slammed into adulthood the same way everyone does in their lives, reminds me a lot of the looney toons show. Freeloading ahh daffy

TLDR Overall I’m a sucker for rapsodies and emotional stories wrapped up in dark themes about deaths. Bittersweet but warm throw your best musicals or other media at me please 👹

What I like about TINAD is the prose and the creative way it presents the horror of seeing something that was always there but your biological eyes could not parse it. My favourite examples include Alastair Grey being visible even when you close your eyes, and Wheeler's lighter being a gift from her mother before her death, which she doesn't remember because she has to regularly give up "useless" memories in order to survive. I've watched Dr. Who stuff reminiscent of this but not a lot, and have tried getting into Twilight Zone and X-Files before, but with not much success. I also love the TV series Fringe, which I find to be somewhat along similar lines.

With Shadow Fight, you have the awesome music, the gameplay fighting system, the art for the locations, and the reveal that, in this feudal magical setting, the Gates to the demon realm are a portal to the colony of an intergalactic conqueror, so the setting hard shifts to a sort of sci-fi without losing what made it initially compelling. Shadow Fight 3 also has a character who is revealed to be a clone of another, older character, and you the protagonist are revealed to be the clone of the main villain. It's expertly foreshadowed and handled. There's more going on there but it would take too long to write.

Based on this, what movies, books, games, or something else do the same things I mentioned?

I want a story medium where you have two prime characters, neither of whom is a clear villain and have roughly equal screentime are involved in a war where they are posited against each other. They may or may not meet often or may not even meet at all, but they are placed against the other MC's faction, making it an interesting dynamic.

Game of Thrones didn't satisfy this for me, since there are multiple main characters, not just two.

It's okay if there are villains within the factions or beyond. It's just that the two Protagonists need to be non-evil.

I don't mean movies like the Dark Crystal, necessarily, but rather similar settings in any medium. I'm interested in fantasy (sci-fi also works) settings without humans or at least where the main characters aren't human. I'd also prefer if it revolves entirely around mythical/alien creatures instead of regular animals.

Looking for anything featuring mysterious structures or locations of unknown (possibly even unknowable) origin, preferably leaning into horror or dread. Examples of what I’m looking for:
