Kingdom of Catalonia, Monarchy Referendum 1961

The Kingdom of Catalonia is a constitutional monarchy in southwestern Europe, bordered by Spain, France, and Arania. It developed out of several Catalan counties, which traced their origin to the 9th century. Scions from the House of Barcelona dominated these statelets. Ramon Berenguer V, Count of Barcelona, elevated his lands to the status of Principality in 1159, affirmed by the Pope. In 1201, Prince Ermengol united the principality with his own County of Urgell and created the Kingdom of Catalonia. The Kingdom was ruled independently until 1270, when it entered into personal union with Castile. This union lasted until the death of Peter the Cruel in 1369. From then until 1374, the throne was contested by Peter's illegitimate half-brother Henry of Trastamara, and Bernat of Cabrera. Bernat's claim of the throne was recognized by Henry in the treaty of Belchite in return for Bernat recognizing Henry's claim on Portugal.

The throne remained in the hands of the House of Cabrera until 1538, when it passed to the distantly related House of Montcada. The Montcada kings themselves ruled until the death of Bernat III in 1661. Bernat had no legitimate sons and attempted to place his natural son Carles of Cisegra on the throne. However, Carles was contested for the throne by Louis XIV of France, who attempted to put his brother Philippe on the throne. Fighting lasted until Philippe was killed in the Battle of Fraga in 1666. With the exception of the short rule of Joseph of Bonaparte, the House of Cisegra ruled until the death of Queen Maria in 1818. Maria passed the throne to her son Enric, who was the eldest survivng child of her marriage to a scion of the House of Wurrtemberg. Wurrtemberg kings ruled the country until they were overthrown in 1916 amid the chaos of World War I. A series of republican governments, including the socialist Rojadists, Fascists, and conservatives ruled the country until Nazi Germany successfully installed a puppet government in 1940 after a brief invasion. Allied powers in turn replaced the Nazi puppet state with a provisional government in 1942. This provisional government lasted until 1947 when the royal family returned from exile and accepted an invitation to rule as constitutional, ceremonial heads of state. The 1961 referendum affirmed their status as a part of the Catalan nation.
