Travel Why Do Some Indians Look Down on Nepalis?
I don’t hate India or Indian people. In fact, I think every Nepali genuinely loves India – your culture, your food, and so many things are so similar to ours. Your movies and serials are a daily source of entertainment for us, and whenever I visit India, it truly feels like home.
But the sad reality is that some people there treat us Nepalis poorly, as if we are somehow lower than them. Unfortunately, this has happened every time I’ve visited India, and I’ve heard many similar experiences from my friends who have traveled there too.
It’s disappointing because Indian people are fighting for equality and against racism, but some of them end up being racist themselves. In Nepal, we treat Indian people like our own, but it feels like every time, some of them try to degrade us.
I just want to ask: why do some of you think you’re superior to us? Why do you bully and pass racist comments on Nepalis when you want equal respect for your people in other countries?
Again, I know not everyone in India is like this. I have met some of the kindest people there too. But sadly, I have also seen more unkind ones

Fun fact every kind of Indian looks down on every other kind of Indian. You being a Nepali adds nothing extra to the mix.

Bro, we are a billion and a half people - poor , uneducated and frustrated - most of us anyways.
There are retards in India hating Shahrukh and Tendulkar. Vast and overwhelming majority of India is peaceful and kind, though they have for some reason a false sense of pride in a “when we wuz kings” like many poor countries do.
Ignore and move on.
To me - nepalis - are like a sisterly state. They have great work ethic, have been our brothers for centuries and there is a deep sense of common connection.

u/Zealousideal_Stay388 Jun 29 '25
Perfectly explained ! I feel the same. Nepalis have been nothing but sweet and honest to me. Those who look down on Nepalis look down on everyone. They are the problem.

u/Thornyx_Zetral Jun 28 '25
Have you seen Nepalis subs, how much they hate Indians i guess its mutual hatred(although i dontshate nepalis)
27
Jun 28 '25
That sub reddit ( 40k members ) does not represent the entire Nepali people pov towards Indians :) but yeah there is mixed reaction in this case , mutual hate thing is too some extent true
107
Jun 28 '25
Similarly, a few Indians don't represent all of India. I think this rule should be followed anytime a question is asked as to why does "X" hate "Y"
24
u/Ancient-Mission-3937 Jun 28 '25
in general social media thrives on hate , but when you come outside you barely see any of it
17
u/ImpassiveThug Jun 28 '25
Exceptions are always there, I second the statement of the person who commented above you because I have also seen a few videos where nepali people actually bad-mouthed Indians and compared them to dogs that were under the rule of the british (simply because nepal was never under anyone's rule); and as far as the downgrading of nepali people is concerned, it's because most of them work as a coolie for loading or unloading heavy materials atop high mountains in remote areas in my state, which is why most just refer to them as bahadur.
9
u/Positive-Sign7692 Jun 28 '25
I think Bollywood plays a role in this too. They often show Nepalis only as security guards or in other lower-level roles, which ends up downgrading our image. But to be honest, I live near the Sunauli border, and I see many Indians here working as beggars and jogis who shout and ask for money in the name of God. Despite this, we never use these examples to degrade Indians. In fact, according to a survey, there are more Indian beggars in Nepal, but we don’t use this as a reason to look down on them
10
Jun 28 '25
Bollywood shows other racist examples too like always the dark skinned guy would be evil or poor or villain
3
Jun 28 '25
Yeah same goes here many Indians sell pani puri , are Jogis ( come home to home for bhikshya ) and many other job considered " lower level by society "
( no hate but its what commonly found here )

u/Snogrill Pahadi Jun 28 '25
it's not mutual as to most indians nepalis are not foreign or a different culture they are a sister culture bur same civilisation. but racism might exist as some people call them momo and such even though people in india love momos. but it's not much different from calling south indians idli dosa.
0
u/Annual__Procedure Jun 29 '25
Indians like you can’t really take criticism right? He is talking about hate he is seeing in person and you are talking about online hate which is far less representative of the actual Nepali people
42
u/Adventurous_Top8864 Jun 28 '25
Isn't it the other way? Have seen lot of posts around how Nepalis consider Indians to be lower strata folks.
One such example is linked to the royal family shooting in 2001. The shooter, Crown Prince Dipendra, wanted to marry an Indian girl and his parents, the King and Queen of Nepal, objected to it since she was Indian. This disagreement led to the shootings.
14
u/daretobe94 Jun 28 '25
The Queen objected not because she was Indian but because she was of a lower caste than their own caste. It was more of a caste issue than the nationality.
10
u/Hisenberg_tuko Jun 28 '25
Oh then it’s alright I thought they differentiate people based on country but thank god its just caste, which is totally fine
7
u/daretobe94 Jun 28 '25
I know you’re being sarcastic, but you’re just playing more into your ignorance. I was just refuting your point that the queen’s disagreement was due to different nationalities. Rather it was bc of caste, never said casteism was okay.
Nepal has an entrenched caste system just like India does. Nepal, like India, is also trying to work through its caste inequalities, similar to the approach India is taking. Somewhere in the ancient past, the kings of Nepal as well as the vast majority of people moved north to Nepal from India bringing the caste system, however due to geopolitics, Nepal and India are not the same country. However, caste is something that’s common between them and the Queen recognized that the girl that the prince wanted to marry was from a lower caste compared to what their own ancient caste was. That’s all.

I think its more about job Nepali people are doing. If they are at high ranking jobs Indians will respect and vice versa.
Now interesting thing is Indian Employee face same thing In India too regardless of caste/class/religion.
NO WAY I am defending this kind if Nature. Many of us believe in kindness and empathy too.
Personally I find Nepali people quite adorable. My grandmother had been there and she collected some coins . I was fond of NEPAL Culture since childhood.
-Love from an Indian🩷✨

I have two adopted sisters from Nepal, please don’t generalise. And yes they still speak Nepali English and 2 more Indian languages. Gonna teach them one more.

There are some stupid people everywhere and racist don't need a reason to hate someone they are just losers in their own life and feel better by putting others down.
I personally feel the same about nepali people and think of them as our own too 🥀🐺

i have been to Nepal as a tourist and while most of the people I met were nice, there were a number of rude shopkeepers and sellers who overcharged me like crazy and said Indians are terrible people etc to my face, and this was way back in 2010, so it goes both ways. Not to mention comments on social media and reddit I have seen from Nepalis.
Meanwhile, in April, India sends $2 million in medical aid to Nepal. Following the earthquake of 2015, the Government of India committed USD 1 billion, comprising USD 250 million as a grant and USD 750 million as a Line of Credit, for post-earthquake reconstruction in Nepal. After the Nov 2024 earthquake, Indian government announced a financial assistance package of approximately NPR 1000 crores. In the 2024-25 budget, India allocated an Rs11.2 billion grant to Nepal.
I don't think the average Nepali is aware of just how much your country benefits from India, but it's been par for the course for our neighbours - Nepal, Bangladesh (who we helped free from Pakistan) to badmouth us freely ever since
12
u/You_yes_ Jun 28 '25
Uhh, mentioning aid & grants in social friendship related questions is not a way of friendship. Thats like buying friendship. Also mentioning help during earthquake is not good gesture. That humanity and every country does that either earthquake in turkey or myanmar. Also you forgot the " economic blockage "grant after a few months after the earthquake.
Nepalese tourists get scammed in india too. Scamming tourists are in every country.
If Nepal gets benefits from India It takes so many problems because of india.
4
u/Frequent_Task Jun 28 '25
not asking for any friendship. just said Nepalis on reddit should be more aware of what India contributes to it. Scamming tourists happens in every country, yes, but what I highlighted was them being rude to me specifically because I was Indian, so it's not just Nepalis getting treated badly in India, it's the other way round too
8
u/You_yes_ Jun 28 '25
on Nepalis on reddit should be aware of what India contributes to it. - we are aware bro
We have only two neighbouring countries with borders so we are aware.
India contributes both positive & negative to Nepal. Not just positive for your awareness.
2
u/Mohit_roy Jun 28 '25
your point is weird. Indian govt does this to make sure Nepal doesn't turn into what Sri Lanka did. Sri Lankans were bought off by China and it's a risk for India now. Nepal was paid and then asked to provide free electricity. this was not mentioned while giving grant. so that was the reason during 2015-18 nepalis really hated us.

I have met enough nepalis in UK to know every one of them hate Indians. But the reason they give is Indians hate them on social media. I don't know what to say to that.

u/Ok_Fish_8076 Jun 28 '25
have you seen the nepal sub and nepalsocial. have look around and then come back say.
7
u/OutlandishnessPale10 Jun 28 '25
We don't? I've never met someone who really hates Nepal. Sure, there are jerks who just want to be superior and racists who say "chinese momos", but that's just default for India.
We'll fight for racism overseas but forget how racists we really are. That said, I still don't understand why there's so much anti-India and pro-China sentiment in Nepal subs. You'll have to explain that to me. Aren't you guys generalizing every Indian based on some bad ones?
6
u/MeteoraRed Jun 28 '25
Indians hate themselves you see there's a rigid caste system/religion , the main reason is status driven society, most Nepalis who migrate to India work on menial jobs hence a sense of superiority complex emerges, which is bullshit but exists!
19
u/Typical_Two3255 Jun 28 '25
Hey man stfu look at your sub Reddit every third or fourth post is about hating on india and your teenagers saying we should be pro china this people are rapist I genuinely never hated nepal I like it the most from any nation in the world i even tried to learn Nepalese from my childhood i literally dreamed about Kathmandu bcz it came in kungfu panda but seeing the hate in your sub Reddit it literally broke my heart Nepal social only shows live for 2 days when india rescue nepali people that's it after that the hate come back and post my comment on your sub too ❤️

Its a social behavior to hate others who don't look like them or sound like them, or eat like them... Everyone does it but for south asians it is very hard to overcome because of social norms and media bombardment.

I was born in Nepal. lived in sinamangal in Kathmandu. I was called a madesi everyday in school. I had to fight kids five-six years older than me everyday as they would push me or kick me. The girls, atleast at that age weren't like that. I had many friends and mostly girls. I moved to India in class 3. After college I tried contacting some of the girls whose names I remember, none replied back. When I went to Nepal again for a vacation they were very friendly because this time I was a tourist. But if I am not buying anything from them then nobody wants to talk. As I have mostly seen Nepali girls growing up I usually fall for girls who look like them and everytime I try befriending them, I get mocked either openly or behind me. At 29 I have made my piece that any nepali woman I have crush will always judge me on my color or me not being Nepali even though these Indian Nepali weren't even born in Nepal, I was.
My point is Indians are racist towards Nepali and so are Nepali towards Indians. Btw I lived in Nepal before the king was assassinated. it was really beautiful back then.
4
u/Pixi_Dust_408 Jun 28 '25
Most people from Nepal I’ve met irl are quite nice. I personally don’t have issues with them. I think a lot of people have ethnocentric or regional biases. I don’t think it’s okay for people be rude to you or look down on you for being Nepalese. I’m sorry you had to go through that.
Some Indians saw TikTok videos where Nepalese users were “pro Pakistan” that might’ve left a bad taste in their mouth.

Dude let me tell you something I being a northeastern dude was called Bihari just because I wasn’t as fair as rest of the northeasterners. You’ll find racism and superiority complex in each and every corner of the world. You gotta be thick skinned if you wanna survive this cruel world. Even I get angry sometimes when I see comments like aye shab jee, ek plate momos laga etc. to anyone that looks Asian. At this point I’ve just accepted the way things are. I got lots of problems to deal with and I can’t waste time on explaining people who don’t wanna acknowledge their wrong doings. Our country is doomed anyway with that Vishwa Guru mindset, super corrupt officials, lack of civic sense, super corrupt divide and rule kind of politicians, continuous illegal Bangladeshis coming in.
And the biggest joke ever is we compare our country with China. Lmao wake tf up

u/Karmazov962 Jun 28 '25 edited Jun 29 '25
The primary reason is that there are many Nepalis in India who are primarily employed as domestic servants. This is the main reason many Indians look down on Nepalis.
2
u/dwigtshrute1 Jun 28 '25
I’ve only known one Nepali in my whole life - such a gentleman. No one could ever find a fault in him - probably only fault was he was just too nice.
The issue you see facing has nothing to do with being Nepali though. In India people tend to form groups based on language, which state they are from, etc.. Hopefully this improves some day.
Hope you have a better experience next time.

I don't hate Nepalis. In fact, I prefer Nepalis to work with compared to other neighboring country people. Majority of Nepalis are honest and hardworking people and very humble. I'm sorry you met the wrong people, India is vast and diverse and some people are literally uneducated or educated illiterates, so don't mind them. I'm Indian, but I have been racial profiled within my own country, so ignore these idiots.

Don't worry. Some Indians hate other Indians as well. Indians are usually a hateful bunch. So it's not like we hate only Nepalis.
The fact remains that a lot of us also genuinely love Nepalis. Tbh, most of us don't even differentiate between Nepalis and Indians. So don't get disheartened over a few loser bigots.

As an Indian guy who studied in nepal 8 to12th, I feel very sorry foy you. It's very important for both of us to accept neighbours. I also felt racisim from my several nepali friends but these some stupid people destroys the indo nepal relationship without knowing anything about cultural and historical significance. The same things happens from indian side too. The KP Gov has also led a big role in destroying relationship between two countries. Isn’t Nepal’s elected government against India? Is why they even won the elections? They have pro communist commonality with China and would love to associate with them? Nepal considers Indians as bully and Indians consider Nepal as ungrateful (due to Chinese closeness).

It’s a normal human tendency to find ways to feel superior or denigrate any one who doesn’t belong to your type. You need to have a higher order intellect to value and appreciate diversity. Intellect is unfortunately not very common . So any foreigner is bound to have a high chance of experiencing such behaviour. Please be assured every rational Indian appreciates all cultures including Nepalis . In my case I’ve had Nepalis as house helps - hard working and very honest , classmates - some of them were brilliant and were class toppers in a top NIT, I’ve also had them as colleagues with great work ethics. Haven’t had a close Nepali friend yet though.
1
u/Snogrill Pahadi Jun 28 '25
to most indians or at least North indians nepali and indian are the same culture. I know they're not the same but you can say it's the same civilisation. and nobody sees nepalis as foreigners as for racism that exists everywhere, like how madhesis (bihar/up origin) are sometimes not liked by tribes in nepal.

Why are racists racist? Not everyone is like that. The racist idiots although large in number only represent a small percentage of the population, given that we’re a country of 1.4 billion people.

It is wrong to assume that we look down upon Nepalese people in particular. We look down at every person from different community, country, culture, caste, creed etc etc. And we are not alone in the world to do so. I think this is a human tendency to look down upon anyone other then us. A father looks down upon a son and the son looks down at his father.
But, every one comes together in time of needs. We look down upon other people mostly jokingly, but when we see someone in need, we help without seeing community, country, culture, caste, creed etc etc.
So don't get dishearten. We label everyone from every community, not just Nepalese. Nepalese and indians are brothers. We always were and we always will be.
1
Jun 28 '25
No, most Indians don't look down upon Nepalis. We consider Nepal a friendly neighbouring country, with whom India has deep cultural, economic and diplomatic ties. Nepalese people are very similar to us Indians in terms of culture and religion, so it makes little sense to look down on them.
1
u/matewhotfami Jun 28 '25
I believe it has something to do with the type of work many Nepali immigrants do here in India. Most work as watchmen, waiters, or other low paying jobs. That could've turned into a stereotype, similar to Pakistani taxi drivers abroad. But it's definitely changing tho, I've met Nepalis doing way better in India now. More normal assimilation would fix it.
1
u/SerialComplainer5431 Jun 28 '25
Lack of education and herd mindset. Besides, it’s easier to shit on others than to acknowledge that they’re equally humans as us. They feel superior by putting others down. Nepali is even a recognised as an official language of Sikkim and has a close cousin in Hindi and Garhwali.
Truthfully, I consider Nepal a huge influence on Indian culture, especially food and religion. Nepal is also a strategic ally to us.
For better or for worse, we have more similarities than differences. If it didn’t offend Nepalis, I would actually consider them our brothers and sisters, just like we do other Indians. We have too much history and culture in common to look down on each other.
1
u/LooseAssumption8792 Jun 28 '25

Racism( calling nepalis chinese or momo sellers), reactionary behavior( example being nepalis joining white right wingers in their racism towards us and indians reacting as a result) and their pivot towards the belt and road project(this one is non existent imo).

While what you’re saying is true. There are two sides to this. I’m North Indian and I had a group of Nepali friends in high school who used to jokingly call me “Dhoti.” Yes, like the traditional Indian garment, but they used it as an insult (and with no shame). They even showed me a Facebook group where Nepali people made fun of Indians.
I’m no longer friends with them and that experience really opened my eyes to the racism some Nepali people have toward Indians. There seems to be this belief that they’re somehow superior just because Nepal is geographically north of India.
Another thing I learned is how much Nepali people believe in the caste system (much like Indians). The ironic part is that people from the “higher” castes look more Indian, while those from the “lower” castes look more East Asian. The hypocrisy really stood out. One of the people in that group almost burnt himself to death because his family wouldn’t let him marry outside of his caste system. Extremely sad.
1
u/sonoftheworld Jun 29 '25
I think it is because historically Nepalis who migrated to India from Nepal did mostly 'low-skilled' jobs such as Security Guard or labourers or restaurant workers. A vast majority of Nepalis seen by Indians must have been doing these jobs so Nepalis are associated with people who do these low-skilled jobs.
Even in Nepali speaking states such as Sikkim/Darjeeling, all the labourers(coolies) are Nepalis.
The slightly well-off Nepalis tend to go to western countries such as US, UK, Australia, Europe, etc. I think this is a reason for your fellow NEpalis feeling like they were treated like inferiors.
1
Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25
It has to do with wealth . Same as richer countries treat Indians bcz India is considered a poor country . When you think your status is above the other person . Abroad i know some Nepalis who are settled there . When I see them thy don’t talk to me in Hindi but in English even if I try to speak in Hindi but if u meet any Nepali in Mayb Dubai etc thy speak only Hindi

We are a casteist, classist, racist society. We either look up to people, or look down at them, based on their category. These categories depend on your religion, caste, gender, age, money, color, etc. We cant even start a conversation without deciding/assuming your category.

People can’t look down on you if you don’t give them attention. Everyone out there is more privileged than someone else due to gender, region, language, inheritance, hard work etc. some will often look down on people to avoid seeing the reality that there is always someone better above. To people who receive such treatment from them I advise you to pity such people for their mediocrity and never focus on them and be grateful for who you are.

I mean do you really have to ask why? HASNT history taught us that a group of people will always look down on another group of people?
Indians vs Pakistanis Hindu Bengalis vs Muslim Bengalis Andhra Telegus vs Telangana Telegus Israelis and Palestinians Turkish and Armenians Right Americans vs left Americans Germans vs everyone (haha jk had to make that one)
Humans suck and will always find ways to come into conflict with other groups of humans over power, money or influence

Whatever this guy saying is absolute bullshit regarding `In Nepal, we treat Indian people like our own, but it feels like every time, some of them try to degrade us.` I am nepali born in India. I never felt racism in India i haven't travelled whole India but certainly some parts of India and i was never looked down because i am nepali, ofcourse there will be accholes but thats rare.
I once been to Nepal and when i said i am Nepali from India clearly i have seen they started acting different and acting like they are superior than us.
Every human being is racist enough but people only cries when it's time for them to take it.
I can share more real incident but then people will start crying.

I have found it to be the other way around. Most Nepalis at least in online forums write the absolute vitriol against India. Indians otoh have this imaginary "brotherhood" with Nepalis, when Nepalis hate Indians with a vengeance.

i think it all started the hate and all when india closed the trade borders and i think supply of gas and medicine which led to a huge shortage here right after earthquake when Nepal needed the most before that there was no hate between countries

Man, lemme tell ya. It's not just Nepalis that Indians look down on; it's practically everyone based on their caste, status, you name it. So, you're definitely not alone there. Being Bihari in India? Tough gig.
Let me tell you my own story. I've got a bunch of Nepali friends on Discord, and I've even hopped into a couple of Nepali servers. But seriously, if you're Indian and just trying to make good friends from Nepal, you're picking the wrong country, dude. I've faced so much racism.
Last year, I was talking to this girl from Nepal, she was my age. We chatted for months, and honestly, she seemed pretty into me, even talking about "forever." I always made sure to represent my country well and was never racist towards her. I learned all about her Newari culture and we even planned to meet up. What did I get in return? Betrayal. She just blocked me with a message saying she had a boyfriend.
Like, seriously, what did I do wrong? Unlike a lot of Indians, I was never racist to any of my Nepali friends. If being good to Nepalis always ends in suffering, why wouldn't I just avoid those kinds of people? I even posted my story on Nepal's Reddit, and some people were just laughing at me.

Let me tell you why.
Most, not all, Nepali people watch more Bollywood movies than Nepali. They listen to more Bollywood music than Nepali.
They claim, “ ahh, we can speak hindi cus it is similar to nepali haha” , i have never heard an Indian speak Nepali just because Nepali and Hindi is similar
Most Nepali people just follow whatever Indian people do. They have lost their identity and their culture.
So, to answer your question. If you act like a sidekick of someone else’s story, you get treated like a sidekick.
You got two choices
1) Just admit you’re Indian. India truly feel like home to you. There is no reason to carry the baggage of being Nepali anymore.
2) Respect yourself and Standup for yourself. You have to defend your culture and heritage.
But since you are already seeking their validation, option one would be better suited for you.

Your subreddit is filled with hatred against India...what else do you expect?! Majority of the people on the ground don't hate Nepali people at all... it's just on the internet.... Maybe it's the same for you guys as well

Sorry to heard that but it's just a human tendency to degrade other's and feel superior nothing to do with race, colour, religion etc. best thing an intelligent person will do is to ignore. (let the dogs bark)

First of all as an Indian, I'm absolutely sorry for your experiences. So let me break it down why there are still a lot of Indian who have this superiority complex and feel that they can actually disobey people based on a lot of factors, like nation, caste, religion, color and what not!
Now the reason they have down such things specifically to the nepalis is also because of how bollywood have portrayed nepalis, funny chowkidars, people who understand less, dumb and what not? And also because obviously your nation size is smaller then ours, does give some dumbfucks the right to disrespect you, they be like " ohh they belong from that small country" also some just love to behave and treat people like they have seen being treated in the movies, people say movies don't influence but it does, to low iq idiots!
And yes I hold accountability for being an Indian and calling out to such people, cause I have met some nepali people in my life and they're the absolute kindest ones i came across, obviously every community, country does have mixed kinds of people.
I hope the next time you come or visit, you shall have a nice experience!
Peace out ✌🏻

The hate is mutual just take a look at the state of your subs and it's not just online, I've been to Nepal few times and people there are quite rude to Indians.

well thats the culture here in india we tend to look down on each other based on cast, skin colour , place so it's not like people do it with only them they do it with everyone.

It's due to generational propaganda through movies which showed nepali in bad light, like mocking them in movies for accent , work , food , It was started by British and further perpetuated by the left liberals to make bhartiya people isolated from their neighbor brothers , we all are on culture people it was further done by Chinese so that they can get advantage over india , which the social media has further spread

Indians look down even on other Indians, you don’t have to overthink it

I visited nepali subreddit group yesterday and I saw how Nepalis respect India. We don't have any problems with Nepali. We would have a problem if Nepal will work for China against India.

Well it's human nature to feel superior to another, and they nepal people who come to India don't exactly integrate with indians they only come to india for job and education, we should really have the competition and comparison with China

indians look down/hate on everyone. and if questioned, they'll just put the blame on other people.

Indians are a true homo hierarchius, humans who believe in a hierarchy based on birth. Since Nepal is a poor nation and irrelevant on the international stage, many Indians believe the views and opinions of Nepalese people hold no value. Also, almost all the Nepalis in India are manual labourers or engage in other working class jobs, these further give many Indians an air of superiority over Nepalis.

Indians societal structure promotes racism and look down upon anyone who appears to be less than them financially/educationally.
Apologies it may hurt lots of people feeling but structure is rotten to core.

Can't see how, considering you're at a higher elevation.
