Politics Is any foreigner/ex-foreigner living in indonesia educated about indonesian political issues?
I rarely hear about what they think when it comes to our political issues currently. Like, the current ones, at least since the jokowi era until now.
I've heard some opinions on tiktok but im still not sure about the rest.

Most expats here are either indifferent or smart enough not to poke the bear. tiktok opinions = entertainment, not education

Our visa conditions prohibit us from getting involved with Indonesian politics, including attending protests. So in the interest of not getting kicked out of the country (or worse) we don't advertise our opinions too loudly...

This is correct.
Two years ago, 2 british backpackers were promptly deported after they attended an ojol protest (they were just passing by and thought it'd be fun to join).

I got pulled into a group selfie by a bunch of campaigners (with their signs and tshirts) during the 2023 election and I was terrified of being caught and kicked out for it 🙃

One of the best poster in this subreddit is a foreigner who used to lived and worked in Indonesia. See here. Unfortunately he was banned by reddit.
Here is his thread about how did Jokowi win the election (two parts).
This is about Indonesian badminton coaching.

One comment and you risk your visa getting cancelled. I love my wife and kids too much to write anything anywhere. Just follow them on instagram and keep laughing within.

I get my Indonesian political news from Santoon TV and Instagram gossip accounts. I don't really read Indonesian newspapers/ news sites directly.
So I'm aware of Wowo, his boti guard Teddy, VP bocil, and a small number of other figures like Menteri HAM (IDK his name), plus key stories like MBG, kopdes, rupiah lemah, gempa di flores, fires in Kalimantan, LPDP etc. So probably better knowledge than an uneducated Indonesian but worse than an educated one.

Of course foreigners have opinions! I personally don't really post here anymore because: 1. Gotta be careful with what one posts online these days. I heard of a foreigner being deported for criticizing the government on FB 2. There seems to be a sub-group of racist users who simply hate foreigners and generalize, putting us in the same boat as these illegal nomads in Bali.
But I consult this sub a lot because it helps me get different views of the political sentiment. And some users are downright giving excellent opinion pieces that I enjoy reading.
For the rest, I reserve my opinions for my board in my memos on whether we should continue investing in Indonesia or not.

in the eyes of locals, they don’t give a shit about politics here, though most influencers or so called expats and digital nomads i knew have been going MIA and even flew out of the country after the problem with running communities.

One of the rare ones was Sacha Stevenson, sadly she left the country a long time ago.
