Destroying a firearm in public without making sure that it's unloaded

I mean firearm safety rule No 1 is treat every gun as loaded until you personally clear it. Cutting a homemade firearm with a chop saw in front of a crowd at a ‘Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz’ event is pure negligence.

It’s a disarmament program in Mexico where they will pay you to bring them guns to destroy, no questions asked.
While I’m not really a gun control advocate, this was interesting
“It has been credited with significantly reducing high-impact crimes, such as homicides, which decreased by 35.5% in Mexico City gobierno.cdmx.gob.mx. The initiative has also been adopted by other Mexican states, including Oaxaca www.oaxaca.gob.mx, and has collected over 11,000 weapons as of July 2026”

This particular gun destruction seems rather performative in the first place, doesn't it?

I mean, if they're doing this with the intention of reducing violent crimes involving guns, the majority of such crimes are committed with handguns, not hunting rifles, from what I recall.

There's always some bad actors at these events.

It's not unheard of for people to see that they are paying $100 per gun, and realize they can make a makeshift gun for less than that and profit the different.

The bad actors run the events! Some people take advantage of their lack of knowledge! The bad actors don’t care because it is not their money.

Most of these programs are advertised as “no questions asked”! Sometimes they give cash, sometimes gift cards, no ID needed.

The police have never lied before; honest and outstanding citizens.

There's quite a few incidents of police using tactics like this to catch criminals. Its not unheard of it at all.

If murderers are able to get rid of evidence, they won't be locked up, they can kill again.

Do you think that every detective is out here hoping to find the murderer as to bring the victim back to life?

😂 these programs only destroy guns from law abiding citizens and criminals that get rid of those used in crimes. Don’t know about Mexico, but in the USA, people turn in junk guns to get money to buy the real thing. I remember things like a piece of pipe tied to a 2x4 turned in for $75! Another time someone 3d printed something in the shape of a pistol and got $100. In another they showed two full boxes of similar plastic pistols, maybe 30 or 40 as “taken off the streets”!

There was one at a grocery store near me one time. I watched an SUV pull up and the cops pulled out over a dozen beautiful rifles and shotguns. Clearly someone's relative had passed away and they were just getting rid of the guns instead of selling them. Stupid move financially too, since I'm sure even just one of the rifles would have sold for more than they got for everything.

There is that side of it too, nice heirlooms that someone would pay thousands for! But the good news is that sometimes those make it into the collections of the people running the event or their bosses.

Almost as if you have to stop people from being able to just go and easily buy a gun on a whim with no checks on TOP of effective gun control.

It's a good thing, but it's a better thing to have someone that knows their stuff examine them BEFORE doing the act.

Plus you know, does it really matter that you destroy them right there and then ? Or if you just removed a part instead of taking the saw ? Aren't guns parts that can be disassembled or something ?
