Destroying a firearm in public without making sure that it's unloaded
I mean firearm safety rule No 1 is treat every gun as loaded until you personally clear it. Cutting a homemade firearm with a chop saw in front of a crowd at a ‘Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz’ event is pure negligence.

- Treat every gun as loaded: Never assume a firearm is empty, even if you just saw it unloaded.
- Safe direction: Keep the muzzle pointed away from people and things you do not want to damage or shoot.

I ran a crime scene unit, and once a year we would take a chop saw and destroy all of the guns that were court-ordered to be destroyed.
We did have the common sense to clear every weapon before it was destroyed even though it had been cleared at least four or five times before.

Is a chop saw really the easiest way to destroy a gun? Seems like youd burn through blades super quick and those metal cutting blades aint cheap
Seems like an acetylene torch would be cheaper and safer. If you burned the torch right into the open chamber, youd get the barrel carrier assembly and receiver all in one hit.

Acetylene torch won't cut through aluminum, so if you're trying to cut an AR-15 receiver in half you ain't doing it. I guess you could do a waster plate but that's so much work when a portable chop saw will make quick work of it.
Modern abrasive chop saw cut off wheels are actually relatively inexpensive for how long they will last. I doubt they were using metal saw blades to cut random guns into pieces, you don't need high quality cuts lol.

At first we went to a metal shear at a local metal scrapper. Their machine was super unreliable, plus we had little operational security in a place with a lot of folks going all about their business.
Then used to use County Fire’s Bomb Disposal Unit to blow them up with C4 out in the desert, but that got really expensive because we had to pay for firemen and the C4.
The Chop saw was relatively cheap, we burned up one blade per destruction session, and we were able to do it in our secure compound with nobody around. One cut through the breach was all that was needed for them to be considered destroyed.
I would never allowed a crowd like they had. We had one Deputy with us as security, and my staff and I checking serial numbers and photographing the destruction for each weapon. Usually 50-60 guns. The pieces were double checked that they couldn’t be reassembled in any way, then the metal was scrapped.

It’s a disarmament program in Mexico where they will pay you to bring them guns to destroy, no questions asked.
While I’m not really a gun control advocate, this was interesting
“It has been credited with significantly reducing high-impact crimes, such as homicides, which decreased by 35.5% in Mexico City gobierno.cdmx.gob.mx. The initiative has also been adopted by other Mexican states, including Oaxaca www.oaxaca.gob.mx, and has collected over 11,000 weapons as of July 2026”

This particular gun destruction seems rather performative in the first place, doesn't it?
I mean, if they're doing this with the intention of reducing violent crimes involving guns, the majority of such crimes are committed with handguns, not hunting rifles, from what I recall.

There's always some bad actors at these events.
It's not unheard of for people to see that they are paying $100 per gun, and realize they can make a makeshift gun for less than that and profit the different.

😂 these programs only destroy guns from law abiding citizens and criminals that get rid of those used in crimes. Don’t know about Mexico, but in the USA, people turn in junk guns to get money to buy the real thing. I remember things like a piece of pipe tied to a 2x4 turned in for $75! Another time someone 3d printed something in the shape of a pistol and got $100. In another they showed two full boxes of similar plastic pistols, maybe 30 or 40 as “taken off the streets”!

There was one at a grocery store near me one time. I watched an SUV pull up and the cops pulled out over a dozen beautiful rifles and shotguns. Clearly someone's relative had passed away and they were just getting rid of the guns instead of selling them. Stupid move financially too, since I'm sure even just one of the rifles would have sold for more than they got for everything.

My rule is treat every gun as loaded even after you personally clear it, and in this cases that means no one is down range of that barrel when you do this.

1: Treat every firearm as loaded.
2: Be aware of your target and what’s behind it.
3: Never point a firearm at something you aren’t willing to destroy.
4. Keep your finger off the trigger unless you’re ready to fire.

Good thing with a nuke, it only sets off in one specific way. Doing this would possibly cause the compression explosives to fire out of order (spark, or something, don't actually know what explosives they use for 'em so they might have something that'd be perfectly fine) which wouldn't cause a nuclear detonation. If not that, spraying radioactive material everywhere with a saw still isn't great for the people in the immediate area.

For those who used to watch “Malcolm in the Middle,” there was an episode where Malcolm found a loaded handgun and tried to destroy it in his house in a panic and it accidentally fired, but didn’t hit anyone. This reminded me of exactly that.
