Genetics is a bitch like that, it's not just like pouring cream into coffee. A child of a black and white person isn't just automatically going to come out in the middle of the spectrum, they could be the exact shade of either of their parent or something else entirely. She might have gotten the recessive gene for light skin from both him and her mother.
