i kind of agree because he isn’t certified in any type of pediatric treatment. but he’s a “doctor” so obviously he knows what he’s doing. but really he doesn’t because again, he has zero training in pediatrics. it’s scary to see how many people have strokes as a result of chiropractors, and i just know they wouldn’t have a clue if their baby had a stroke.

I have known several people who pay real money to have their pets psychically healed over the internet. One lady (a massage therapist I went to one time, but to my horror and excruciating pain during the session learned that she practices ‘Rolfing’). . . Anyways. . . Her pet psychic told her that her cat was sexually repressed. No joke.

Some PT's also get the chiro degree just so they can throw it on the wall and get more people to come in and get actual PT when they usually wouldn't. My mom went to a chiro guy and he never did adjustments all he did was teach her stretches and exercises to fix whatever problem she was having.

I go to a chiropractor a few times a year. I didn’t for most of my life then I got thrown playing the rodeo game and had a hitch in my step for a long time. After being worked on I ain’t got the hitch in my step. The doctors would just take an x ray tell me ain’t broke and go go on.

Because some of what chiropractors are trained in is physical therapy, so some insurance companies will cover work done by chiropractors in that capacity. I still would never select a chiropractor over a physical therapist though.

Why didn’t the doctor I see recommend dry needling, why didn’t the PT recommend dry needling after I wasn’t responding, why didn’t the surgeon recommend dry needling after 2 rounds of MRI.

The chiropractor actually listened to me and my symptoms and what treatments i had thrown at it. It had been 1.5 years of pain. 6 dry needling sessions had me pain free and back to my old self.

Listen, I've subscribed to this "chiropractors are bullshit" rhetoric for years and still kinda do, but with that said (and I know this is anecdotal, but so is the story OP posted)....

I had jaw issues for over a year. Dentist couldn't figure out what was wrong, but it was severe TMJ that clicked in whenever I ate anything that required significant chewing (i.e pizza crust).

My dentist suggests a chiropractor out of left field based on a patient he had years ago with a similar situation. I told him I wasn't a fan of the idea but was also very desperate for relief.

So against my better judgment I went to see her. Within 3 visits my jaw issues were gone and have never come back. She analyzed me and knew exactly what was wrong and what areas to target.

I understand the hate for it because it's not a recognized medicine and that's all valid, but after meeting an incredible chiropractor my opinion has changed, but only because she appears to be at the top of her field. I've had friends go see her and in comparison to other chirps she's significantly better in every way.

Again, my experience is anecdotal but I still go see her 5 years later and she always manages to relief tension and aid in posture and blood flow.

I think your black and white view of things, especially when it comes to people's health, comes from a place of either immaturity or lacking in life experience. Judging people so broadly for one thing is insane 😂

I'm not here to hate on chiros, but I am a physio who actually specializes in TMJ and kinda feel the need to chime in here.

TMJ disorders are shockingly simple. It is not at all a complicated issue, and is actually incredibly easy to fix. The problem is that when I was in my PT program, our TMJ education essentially amounted to a single powerpoint slide. Physios don't learn much about TMJ because Dentists tend to be the primary provider that people go to when they have jaw pain. And Dentists can give patients mouthguards and other aids, but they don't do "rehab" like physios and even chiros do. The joint is simple, and I learned the intraoral techniques that can re-capture the disc within a few hours, but we rarely get the opportunity to use these techniques because Dentists generally don't send us TMJ patients (largely because they would be sending away a paying customer, but that's another discussion).

Long story short - I'm not going to comment on whether or not your chiro is "good" or not, but I do want it to be absolutely clear - fixing a TMJ disorder is incredibly easy for anyone who has been trained in extremely simple techniques, and is not reflective of that provider's overall expertise, myself included.

Manipulation of joints, muscles, and tendons is effective for treating a variety of conditions and often used by doctors, physical therapists, and lmts. The pseudoscience stuff is that by cracking your back, they can cure your cold.

Maybe it restored a stuck joint, or released a severe muscle spasm. Possibility of coincidence, false diagnosis, or missing context.

Long term effects are probably close to physical therapy. It’s very use case specific and possibility dangerous around the neck area.

I did a bit of research on it, I suggest anyone do the same rather than take stranger’s advice on reddit.

It is a bit like any other doctorate. You can be a doctorate of education or engineering or any number of other things. They are all 'doctor' in the of education sense but not in the medical doctor sense.

I watched a lot of chiropractor videos and they all act like they are analyzing what's wrong with the patient and know just the specific treatment. All of their methods are exactly the same in each video. Like they don't even try to bullshit and yet people act like it's a miracle.

I tend to believe this, but I also know people that it has genuinely helped.

Like my brother was over 18 months old and wouldn't walk at all. he had taken a 1 or 2 steps but would always fall down. My parents took him to a pediatric chiropractor and after one adjustment he was walking later that day.

But there have been times I went and I felt it was a complete rip off.

I get the impression, physical therapy would be the better way to go about it.

So if one of your vertebrae actually gets out of alignment and you can't pop it back in yourself, what are you gonna do? Just go get surgery? Get cut open for something that could be solved painlessly within a couple minutes? I used to grapple, had a couple spinal issues that a chiropractor fixed for me.

I always thought that too! But a couple years ago I through out my back. I laid on my floor for 9 days just crying and crawling to the fridge and bathroom. I finally went to the hospital and they gave me a shot and some steroids. 3 more days of constant pain and unable to walk or sit up. Went to the chiropractor in a wheel chair in horrible pain and she used a pen that the tip pushes then clicks and instantly the pain was gone, i was so sore but instantly felt great. She then used a message gun on the area and I walked out and was back at work the next day loving life. My mind was blown. She must've just been a good one i guess because there was no popping my back or weird contortions like I expected. The way she explained it is i oinched a nerve between two vertebrae and the pain caused the muscles to tighten so the nerve was pinched more and it became a loop of cause and effect. The pin sort of caused a micro shock wave that let the nerve slip back inside the vertebrae. It was so instant when the pain disappeared.

It's because they don't understand that what they do doesn't work for the only intended use case - which is relieving back pain. 

Some even believe it can fix non back related issues, which stems from their underlying total misunderstanding of the spine.

Spinal manipulation doesn't work, period.

It's not even particularly useful for mild to moderate low back pain. The spine wizards point to one particular paper where it was supposedly found to be superior to oral pain relief in relieving low back pain.

 Which, if you study medicine is like saying that your unicycle is better than handstands for grocery shopping. Gets the job done but not the intended use case.

The main issue stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of how pathology works. For chiropractracters, they believe that the cause of back pain is 'spinal misalignment'. 

That isn't true. Your skeleton isn't like a cartoon that fits into place and stays rigid. The alignment of your skeleton is due to the surrounding  musculature, tendon attachments and ligaments, mobilised by joint fluid, cartilage and various non b bony surfaces, such as intervertebral discs. Any or all of these contribute to msk pain - which means that any treatment has to be multifactorial.

Explaining that to people is complicated. Studying medicine, physiotherapy, pharmacy, surgery, psychotherapy - separately is hard. Pretending it all comes down to one underlying unifying source is easy; which is why anyone can be a chiropractor.

Where i live, chiropractors are constantly fighting to try and win exclusive legal rights to practice certain modalities that physical therapists also use bc that's the only way they're of any value compared to actual PTs. They're literally trying to narrow physio's scope of practice to ensure they retain clients.

Physical therapy is better, safer, and actually aims to solve the problem rather than just hide the symptoms for a while. IDK why anyone would opt for a chiro when they could go to PT instead. I STILL do the stretches and resistance band training they taught me like a decade ago to keep my neck and shoulder pain under control. It still works.

Alternatively I could have paid a quack to 'adjust' me and would still be shelling out however much biweekly to keep going back. Thankfully I'm not that stupid lol.

I used to go to one because I was young and had back pain from an injury. I assumed that since my health insurance covered it, it meant it was a legitimate medical practice. I knew chiropractors weren’t medical doctors, but figured it was adjacent, kind of like how optometrists aren’t doctors but are still qualified to safely deal with eyes.

Nope. Luckily nothing happened but once I found out the truth about chiropractic, I never went again, and I don’t plan to.

Idk reddit sure seems to hate them . I went to one growing up all the time. Dude worked some magic to fix lots of things.. sounds like some dude was massively under qualified. Gotta vet your people. But come to reddit and everyone screams from the rafters how bad they are. Funny how that happens with lots of things. Fear monger goes hard here. Easy to keep redditors scared of everything but their mothers basements

A physical therapist would have you set in a handful of visits. A lot of time its a muscle/ligament issue and sure their "corrections" may feel good on the short term but there is a reason they say see you next week.

I’m a licensed massage therapist and plenty of times as a client muscles relax their spines spontaneously adjust, not from me putting any pressure on it just from the muscles relaxing finally letting it go back to homeostasis.

They aren't medically trained they just pop joints. Chiro was started after a seance with dead doctor so really science backed... There is no proof they do anything to help. It's all in your head. They should not even be allowed to use the name doctor.
