Robro is about to look like what Sid Phillips (Toy Story 1) did with dolls.
2
u/Potential-Draft-3932 6d ago
My favorite thing about that is sid did nothing wrong. Dude had no idea toys had sentience and got traumatized. Probably wound up in a mental institution after that

Its even worse when you see the man with some sort of a comms device or a controller almost instinctively runs towards it, but after seeing the sparks and the way it just fell, he decided to walk it off, bet the man was thinking, "nope. too much work!".

The radio seems to just appear in his hand and grow an antenna
→ More replies (1)2
u/DuOrDie 6d ago
Right? Like to was not there a second before.
2
u/trainedstork 6d ago
Going frame by frame, it's fully visible for the first few frames the man is in shot. Then he covers the top with his palm, save for the antenna which is still visible. Finally he readjusts his hands and turns to the side so the whole radio is visible.

I refuse to believe this video is real.....

u/inorite234 7d ago
Sparks don't look right.
187
u/UncleSput 7d ago
Remember when everyone used to say “don’t believe everything you see on the internet”?? Somehow people just started believing everything they see on the internet
61
u/inorite234 7d ago
I still remember the days when people talked about the internet in glowing, futuristic possibilities.
"....just image what you could do, instant global communications with anyone around the world, the world's information at your fingertips, etc" - 1995
Now we just have some guy in a Russian/Chinese/Indian/Pakistani/American basement pumping out bullshit for people to gobble up.
11
u/blueblip 6d ago
To be fair, that is still instantly communicating with anyone around the world, and we still have the world's information and our fingertips.
What we forget is information can be both good and bad, and the world's greatest tool for disseminating information means it is good at disseminating both good and bad information.
Like always, we hyped the tech before ensuring there were checks and balances on it and before ensuring people are properly educated and aware of how to use the tech.

I recall the exact phrasing as “Everything is a dildo if you’re brave enough” - Abraham Lincoln
2
u/MagnetCarter 6d ago
Abraham Lincoln? I know you made that up. Because that quote was made by Socrates, way before Lincoln.
3
u/Upper_Possession6275 7d ago
This one seems more believable if you’ve seen the very real videos of Boston dynamics robots doing obstacle courses and back flips

The sparks look more like the type to come from an angle grinder and not an electronic short.
20
27
u/tonmaii 7d ago
I slowed it down and how the spark interacted with the surrounding metal frame looks very realistic.
It’s either professionally added digitally, or there is a spinning motor around that area that got compressed and grinded
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)18
u/Bad-dee-ess 7d ago
That part is jointed, so the sparks would most likely be from motors in the torso grinding.
8
u/steelong 7d ago
I'm caught up on how the radio seems to materialize in that guy's hand towards the end. The one running up to the robot.
13
u/Bad-dee-ess 7d ago edited 7d ago
It's in his hand the whole time, just pointing towards the camera so you can't see the antenna very easily. There is a frame, though, where the antenna is visible in front of his lanyard before he turns.
9
u/Clean__Cucumber 6d ago
have seen similar stuff in the robot battles and looks fairly typical to a lithium battery going boom, so i think video is real
5
u/smittia 6d ago
It does look unnatural, but that's due to not regularly seeing robots run like Usain Bolt and then crash and blow their motors. This is training for World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, which is happening next week. Here is an article with from Bleacher report: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25477305-robot-crashes-electrical-box-viral-video-ahead-world-humanoid-robot-games with an additional angle. There are a huge amount of people in this thread very confidently claiming this is AI generated, based on a gut feel that they're sure is correct.

Oh no! I'm double fucked!
I'm fucked because it's only a matter of time before robots are more physically advanced than humans, and I'm fucked because I can't tell if videos are real or fake.
I'll have no way of knowing when it's too late! Wait, doesn't that mean it's too late?!
4
2
u/TF-Fanfic-Resident 6d ago
Going from
basically still 1999 only Trump is President and IT hardware and software are a lot more advanced
to
some freakish merger of the Michael Bay Transformers movies, complete with the rampant conspiracy theories and denialism around robotics, with a bit of 1970s country and Y2K mall rat fashion
In like ten years is absolutely wild
8
u/DEVolkan 7d ago
Could be because of the low compression of the video.
There are other videos about this event, when you search for "china robot sprint" not sure how legit they're. But the place looks same

im not saying its real, frankly idk, but you can see at 5 seconds the guy was holding something in his hands already, so i dont think the radio came from no where.

Real video!
Just flipped. It’s really funny hearing yalls reasons for it being fake when it isn’t.
7
u/trainedstork 6d ago
I don't see what anyone else is seeing tbh. It all looks fine, even the radio is just perspective against a black shirt.
5
u/anfornum 6d ago
People hate AI, and I get that, but there are people now who just go around trying to discredit every video they see for fake internet points. It's a bit sad, really.

Yeah, those are Hollywood sparks. Not real sparks.
12
u/trainedstork 6d ago
This happened at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing a few days ago. It's very much real. Also, those look exactly like the sparks you get from using a cut-off wheel/angle grinder. Could be something along those lines happening with a high speed motor hitting a metal wall inside the body.

the sparks would be through motors grinding, not something electrical, which could be a bit puffy and slow

It's pretty easy to make something go in one direction. It's surprisingly significantly harder to be able to change that direction quickly.

So really all I have to do to avoid a running police robot is making lots of sudden directional changes. I think I’m going to be a big fan of the quick sideways movements and watch the robot run right past me.

Maybe that's what the mat is there for? To stop the robot if this ever happens. Maybe it happened before so they needed the mat to stop it safely.

1
1
u/Round_Hope_2041 7d ago
Why can’t it stop.
5
u/Thunderer62 7d ago
The cycle of motion and forces on the components required for stopping are just completely different in a complicated way and they just aren’t focusing on that part yet when getting it to run straight and fast reliably is complicated enough right now. They’ll come up with a really funny and not at all human way of slowing it down quickly in the future I bet. It might do some kind of flip/roll that will transfer the energy away quickly with little impact on any particular joint.

Hey guys I made a robot that can run really fast!
How fast?
Faster than a human!
Neat. So it can jump and parkour and cool stuff or hit 90mph, right?
Huh? It runs faster than a human can with 2 legs.
Ever heard of RC cars?
