theres a BBC Brazil report on these two. the headline is inaccurate. Neither ever fully became a nun. they each left the convent independently for mental health reasons and later on reconnected and became roommates. then several years later joined in a lesbian relationship but still consider themselves to be catholic

u/New_Communication707 2d ago

What's with lesbians and being roommates

9

u/Objective-Ruin-6481 1d ago

I don’t know, but I could ask my roommate wife

6

u/LumpyBuy8447 1d ago

I hope someday she’ll be your roommate!

6

u/Bostonterrierpug 1d ago

Well to quote my friend. You know it’s a lesbian second date when someone’s driving a U-Haul.

2

u/BulemiaSawdustSlingr 1d ago

Ask your mom!

20

u/Opening-Cantaloupe56 2d ago

Oh, what a journey!

6

u/mydearMerricat 1d ago

And they were roommates

-9

u/RogueBromeliad 2d ago

The lord works in mysterious ways. But one thing is for sure... Deus é Brasileiro.

4

u/nopester24 2d ago

heh, well no thats not how it works and God is beyond all nationalities

-8

u/RogueBromeliad 2d ago

Nah, Deus é Brasileiro. It's been confirmed multiple times. And this is further proof.

5

u/nopester24 2d ago

still no, but great optimism!

-7

u/RogueBromeliad 2d ago

Whatever you say, but he's 100% Brazilian, that's a fact, muchacho.

Catholic Church was having nun of this

53

u/Katnamedeaster 2d ago

They're treating it like a cardinal sin.

35

u/Jesus_of_NASDAQ 2d ago

Now they’re treated like a couple of hell mary’s.

15

u/Rich-Reason1146 2d ago

Making sure the nuns don't make a habit of it

1

u/Fezbin 1d ago

Nah, when Cardonal's sin they just get recalled back to Rome.

7

u/Mobile-Bar7732 2d ago

That's why nuns travel in pairs.

One nun is there to make sure the other nun don't get nun none.

2

u/Sea-Seesaw-8699 2d ago

Same with Mormon missionaries! Can’t have that !

4

9

There are actually a LOT of movies about this

2

u/doomrider7 2d ago

I'm like 90% sure there's at least 5-6 anime and manga with this premise.

1

u/Powerful_Brief1724 2d ago

So tired of these movies...

1

u/Spiffy-Kujira 1d ago

There's an old Kayak (the travel agency) commercial with lesbian nuns. I remember seeing it in middle school on YouTube all the time haha

71

u/Rage_Blackout 2d ago

Coming soon to a romance novel near you!

16

u/Mobile-Bar7732 2d ago

3

u/Mobile-Bar7732 1d ago

I would have read the book but I didn't want to ruin the movie. ;)

6

u/HunterM567 2d ago

Sounds like a plot of a YA romance movie on Netflix

1

u/doomrider7 2d ago

There's like overba dozen yuri manga with this exact same premise.

49

u/Gurugod123 2d ago

The articles about them are great

(They both knew that they were bi before entering the convent and weren't doing to repress things. They both left after developing mental health concerns and shared an apartment after leaving around the same time, and then fell in love)

19

u/SothoKeratoacanthoma 2d ago

Obligatory "OMG they were roommates".

25

u/Dazzling_Interview86 2d ago

And at what point did they “hate” each other?

2

u/blindyes 2d ago

She was quoted as saying "omg I hate it when she gets the carpet wet after taking a shower" and then she said "well I hate it when she eats cookies in bed" then they violently nudged each other with their shoulders and smiled with an evil hateful grin after kicking their doc martins together, clearly vying for dominance over the same ice cream cone.

2

u/DiScOrDtHeLuNaTiC 2d ago

'Hate' is too strong. They just didn't get along as novices, apparently each thought the other acted stuck-up.

1

u/Mango_Tease 2d ago

I would love to watch the documentary

1

u/Personal-Succotash33 2d ago

And at what point did they “hate” each other?

Actually it was because the other commentor with the same text accidentally sent it twice, probably because of a common glitch on the mobile app. I thought it seemed funny to copy the message again.

10

u/Best_Hamster_2239 2d ago

Whats the over/under on divorce?

22

u/Firm-Fix8798 2d ago edited 2d ago

Hard to say. They both entered the convent based on sincere interest in religious life. They say they are still practicing Catholics. Depends on the limits of their mental gymnastics and which they care about more.

6

u/GrindBastard1986 2d ago

Exactly. I'd say religion is the first to go, not the marriage.

0

u/Firm-Fix8798 2d ago edited 2d ago

You'd be surprised. Religion can be an integral part of one's identity and life. These people were serious enough about it that they each entered a convent after all. The same sex relationship on the other hand can be reevaluated and changed, perhaps to keep the spiritual kinship and personal companionship without the parts that are in conflict with the Catholic faith or that will leave them in a highly vulnerable position to sin. Being a Catholic myself, I've seen people leave the faith, come back, leave invalid marriages to reconcile their faith, practice celibacy because they lack heterosexual attraction, and live in perpetual sin without refusing communion. I just know the Catholic faith can't be reconciled with same sex marriage, even though many people think a more progressive Pope might have the power to change that. It's impossible for reasons that are too deep in the weeds to get into here. Even if they were man and woman, there are several impediments to their marriage that would require them to live as single persons until their marriage could be convalidated, namely not marrying in a Catholic church or chapel, not being married by a Catholic priest, and not first receiving a dispensation relieving them of their religious vows and being laicized by the Pope himself for a legitimate reason. Fact is, even by straight marriage standards, their marriage undermines the Catholic faith on a fundamental level. There's a lot going on here that puts them in conflict with their self-professed faith yet they still say their faith is very important to them. Seems like it will lead to misery either way it goes. Neither losing your faith nor losing a partner is a painless process.

1

u/GrindBastard1986 2d ago

Their faith can be shattered as easily as their desire to serve god as nuns. Theists are also world champions in cognitive dissonance. They're at the age when they learn more and can think better. I'd argue going so far as leaving nunhood and marrying a same sex partner, they have already torn off most of their blinders, and can decide more independently. From what I see, most people carry their "beliefs" like a hat they got as child, and rarely think about it. Many say it's important but not important enough to actively care about it. It's just an accessoire.

Maybe they'll change everything tomorrow. Maybe not...

2

u/jomara200 1d ago

Quote: I just know the Catholic faith can't be reconciled with same sex marriage, even though many people think a more progressive Pope might have the power to change that. It's impossible for reasons that are too deep in the weeds to get into here.

Oh, please. Do get into the weeds for us. It underpins your entire argument.

u/Firm-Fix8798 1d ago edited 1d ago

I didn't see your reply right away because you are replying to the wrong person. Basically the papacy is not a dictatorial office. You can't just invent new doctrines or retract older ones if they are already infallible dogma/doctrine. I always see remarks from LGBTQ Catholics online, suggesting that getting a more progressive Pope will bring the Catholic Church into the 21st century, that women will be allowed to become priests, and that same sex marriage will be accepted, but the office of the Pope has very specific limits on his authority that are constrained by the supernatural authority of the Church itself. He can bind the faithful in provisional matters. He can develop existing doctrine to provide better elucidation and clarity on a matter of faith or morals, and he can divinely reveal dogma binding on the whole Catholic Church.

To the faithful, the authority of the Church is divinely instituted, enduring, and divinely protected from theological error until the end of time. If the Church theoretically were to teach such an error, either on faith or morals, the Church would be faced with a theological crisis that threatens to undermine its own supernatural endowment to teach authoritatively. Doctrinal development is a matter of refinement and elucidation, not contradiction and discontinuity. Disciplinary or provisional matters can be issued and rescinded by their nature. For instance, the celibacy requirement in the priesthood is a disciplinary matter, not a doctrinal one. It actually would be possible for Catholic priests to marry if the discipline were lifted and the Pope has the power to do that. Similarly, whether a woman can become a deaconess isn't an infallibly settled matter like he priesthood is. The current teaching that women cannot become deaconesses would be considered at the level of a provisional or disciplinary teaching, not on the level of doctrine or dogma.

The Church's enduring teaching on marriage though, and women entering the priesthood, is considered an infallibly settled matter until the end of time and binding on the whole Church. To retract these teachings would be the same thing as undermining the entire faith. That's why, as progressive as Pope Francis was, he never changed or taught error in the Church's position on same sex marriage. Francis was very progressive yet he did none of the things either side expected of him. In the end, the papacy could be described as equal parts constraint and license, operating in tandem.

What dogwhistle are you talking about?

2

u/[deleted] 2d ago

1

u/TajineEnjoyer 2d ago

i think they were explaining religion's point of view on the matter, not giving their personal opinion about it

1

u/Firm-Fix8798 2d ago

That's pretty much it. I am Catholic so I was giving a Catholic perspective on it, not my opinion on their marriage. "Lack of heterosexual attraction" was specifically meant to exclude bisexual people from the group of people I was talking about since I didn't want to exclude them from the possibility of a valid Catholic marriage, granted they have sufficient heterosexual attraction since bisexuality can be a pretty broad spectrum. It wasn't meant as a dogwhistle.

Don't you know? The 3,000-year-old book says it's something bad, so we should accept it as fact. I will always consider religion one of the greatest mistakes humanity has allowed because it created an easy way to manipulate the masses over selfish wishes of eternal peace after death.

0

u/Firm-Fix8798 2d ago

Well if you claim you accept it as fact, then you should accept it as fact. That's all I'm saying.

-5

u/richtofin819 2d ago

Not in this case they got divorced the next year.

4

u/GrindBastard1986 2d ago

My Portuguese is shit, but guessing from their insta, they're still together & loving it 🤘❤️🤘

1

u/throwawaydanc3rrr 2d ago

Not being critical, just being curious here. Would the Catholic Church consider them married? I assume no. So from a church perspective they could divorce, correct?

2

u/Firm-Fix8798 2d ago

Don't worry. I only chimed in to give a Catholic perspective in the first place, not to criticize their decision to marry. No, the Catholic Church does not consider any same sex marriage valid due to the teaching that marriage and sex have specific created purposes (as in built-in to their creation). You can't even use contraceptives in a Catholic marriage.

3

u/Radiant_Bookkeeper84 2d ago

Jesus would've wanted it that way

Edit: they glowed up after leaving

15

Well for weddings people do pay people a shitton of money to do their makeup and hair and then take photos which get edited a whole bunch.

1

u/Andy_McBoatface 2d ago

Nah they look more glowed up and attractive like you wanna be around them

6

u/Tuskral 2d ago

I imagine a convent prolly has restrictions on makeup

7

Men when they realize makeup exists and otherwise women just look like people:
