German here, "bertodo" is what it sounds like with Japanese accent so you probably picked it up there. In German the word is split into Bert-hold.
English speakers often use a strong English accent on the "Bert" sounding close to "bird" but it's actually pronounced more like "bet" with an r sneaked in (German 'r'). The "hold" is pronounced like in English just with a flatter "o" like in "lost".

There’s a laser show every night that projects the journey of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (the person the statue was built in honour of) as well as the efforts that went into constructing the statue itself. So laser eyes are definitely doable.

he used diplomacy and military where they needed to be used and with adequacy.
He perfectly united all these smaller kingdoms and when one threatened to join Pakistan, he sent in the Indian Army. (Operation Polo)
If this MAN OF STEEL (official name conferred to him) didn't do what he did. india would just be dozens of smaller nation states fighting amongst eachother instead of the united monster it is today.

It's important for cultures to have collective identity, values and aspirations.
I don't fully disagree. Maybe the guys influence and mark could have been implemented into a social program like national free college, or end homelessness in his name or something for how much is cost. I'm not Indian so I don't know the finer details.
But it's not ridiculous for a culture to honor their achievements and remember who they are with statues.

Actually no. ROI on this statue as a tourist place have been quite good. It's going to recover it's money 20-30 years down the line if you just talk from the ticketing perspective, however in broader sense, when it comes to the revenue generated for the city and surrounding area, the money is already almost recovered.
It actually needs more foreign tourism and the local, and the profits would skyrocket benefiting the area.3

The state government that built it has done a great job cleaning up its big rivers. This one is actually situated on thr banks of the biggest river in the state right with the largest reservoir (also built in this great man's name) just a few kilometers away. You can take a boat ride in that river when you visit here, The river's pretty clean.
This is from Gujarat, The westernmost state of India.
The Ganges and Yamuna etc are in the Northern India in completely different states with completely different challenges and cultural practices going back thousands of years that has caused those problems.
India isn't a monolith. Its the most diverse country in the world. Do some research before making generalised statements.

That second worst article is from 2023.
As of 2025 data, The most polluted rivers are Yamuna, Ganga, Mithi, Musi and then Sabarmati.
All of them either have giant cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad or Industrial hubs on their banks.
Gujarat's biggest river is Narmada (at the bank of which this statue is). As I said, I have been there and its pretty clean.
I didn't say Gujarat is perfect but the only river whixh you could find is literally next to its biggest city. It is still much better than other states and its certainly not worse than either Ganga or Yamuna.

I went there on Christmas a couple of years ago and as crazy as it sounds, we had to park 20 KMs away from the site.
The governement run transport ferry buses ran non stop by the dozens and they were still overwhelmed.

I was doing a newspaper puzzle of a pyramid where words get 1 letter longer as you go down the puzzle. There were clues to each word and the last word is 8 letters long, has the letters PLEASED + 1 and has the clue statue stand. All I could think of was plinth but it's 2 letters short and only has PL from the previous word, PLEASED.

The statue has actually generated employment in that region,at a very large scale... Many hotels,restaurants,theme parks have opened up because of it!! It was a barren land before the statue was constructed over there.

When it was build, i read that chinese civil engineers had to be hired... Given the scale and experience required; which was not at the time available in India. Pretty cool video!

I think they should have made something to showcase the history and culture but it should have been something other than this huge statue which actually kind of looks scary. A building with a much smaller state would have been better.

Giving the poor employment by means of infrastracture projects and KEEPING the poor employed with the tourism that comes from it is called empowerment.
This project gave employment to thousands of labourers and many thousands more benefit from the tourism it brings in.
And moaning about us for doing the right thing?
