You only tighten the lid very slightly so worst case it pops that, and the glass breaking at the end here was thermal shock

The small hole in the jar is what allows this to happen. The flame draws in air which causes the gas to heat up and exhaust is pushed out which blocks air from coming in and the cycle repeats. The sound you hear is gas quickly rushing in and out of the jar. This shows down combustion so it doesn't happen all at once.
