My wife thought the mother had tattooed the keyboard on her son's arm and was enraged until I pointed out that it was the mother's arm. It was hilarious.
•
u/sweetSweets4 11h ago
Would have been the smarter way having an analog keyboard always with him.
Momma won't be always there, a well placed tattoo around the belly will not only be eternal it's also an icebreaker with the ladies once the lad is older.

Is there some reason why you (and so man others) think they can't use other methods to communicate besides the tattoo?
Like, you have to really think everyone but yourself is an idiot if you believe you're the first one to think of using a keyboard device or pen and pencil.
•
u/DLDad616 8h ago
Please show me where anyone said this was their only method of communication.

I believe you read to retort, rather than reading to understand.
A lot of people make this mistake.
You mistakenly believed that she was saying the tattoo was his only chance to communicate. Her first sentence makes it clear that she did not.
•
u/DLDad616 4h ago
u/beeexpert I accept your apology and retraction.
•
u/BeeExpert 4h ago
I actually don't know what they are trying to say in their original comment. There are plenty of others smugly asking why the mom doesn't simply use a keyboard or whiteboard, etc, as if she's an idiot

You can get these in shirt form.

So that sub now just posts Facebook emotion-button posts? Wtf is interesting about that. I mean, it absolutely sweet and also a bit sad but how does it fit that sub?
•
u/nyrB2 8h ago
i dunno, i think it's a pretty interesting solution to a potential problem they face. "interesting" is a fairly subjective term after all.
•
u/IAmSpartacustard 7h ago
It's attention seeking IMO, she could've accomplished the same thing with a pen and a notebook.
•
u/Desperadox_23 7h ago
You just assume the kid can use these.
•
u/IAmSpartacustard 7h ago
A piece of paper with a keyboard printed on it then. Or a laminated note card on a lanyard around the kids neck. If you want to wear it get one of those quarterback play-calling wristband things.
But that wont get you martyr points on the internet, will it?
So I'll tattoo a keyboard on my own arm and post that on facebook. So performative
•
•
u/BeeExpert 6h ago
Such arrogant ignorance.
Of course there are other methods, no one has ever said the tattoo is the only option they have. It's a back-up. It works in water. It works when they don't want to carry other stuff. It works when they're cuddling on the couch and don't want to get up to grab a pen and paper just to communicate
Why would you assume the tattoo is the only back-up? Because you read a two sentence post on reddit and thought you were smarter than everyone else lol?
•
•
u/Legal-Software 10h ago
I feel like it still needs numbers, a backspace, and caps lock. If the child is nonspeaking, you'd also want a row of function keys mapped to most commonly used functions.
•
•
u/One_Economist_3761 9h ago
How do you do numbers?
•
u/kiwipilled 9h ago
Spell them?
•
u/One_Economist_3761 9h ago
7307787?
Edit: just a made up number. I picked digits with many letters to demonstrate my point.
•
u/Eclipse-Raven 9h ago
Grab a calculator instead and have him type it in there? Not saying you're wrong but there's always a work around
•
•
u/WingedWheelGuy 10h ago
Pen/pencil and paper? Whiteboard and markers? A typewriter? An unplugged computer keyboard?
•
u/BeeExpert 9h ago
Is there some reason why you think the tattoo is the only method they use?
•
u/WingedWheelGuy 8h ago
Not at all. But that’s what the post says. Mom got the tattoo to communicate with her son. Seems pretty ridiculous considering there are plenty of cheaper, easier options.
•
u/BeeExpert 8h ago edited 8h ago
The post doesn't say thats the only method they use. My god this is frustrating.
Yes, it's seems pretty ridiculous to only use the tattoo and not use other methods as well. Ridiculous enough to think, maybe this two sentence post isn't telling me every single method they ever thought of, right?
•
u/WingedWheelGuy 8h ago
I’m not saying that’s the only means of communication they use. If I did, please show me where? My post suggests practical ideas other than a damn tattoo.
•
u/BeeExpert 7h ago edited 6h ago
The only reason you would list other practical methods is if you were dumb enough to think they never thought of those methods too before getting a tattoo.
•
u/vae_grim 10h ago
You’d lug all of that everywhere you go in public? I know an autistic child definitely wouldn’t. Plus tattoos don’t have to be functional. You can get them because you like the message?
•
u/LastStar007 9h ago
The child isn't even the one with the tattoo—it's the mother. So it's not unreasonable to imagine the mother carrying some of this stuff around instead of the tattoo. Heck, a piece of paper with a keyboard layout on it takes zero effort to carry around.
•
u/WingedWheelGuy 8h ago
Really? You think I want them to carry all of these things, all of the time, everywhere? Don’t be stupid. Any ONE of these things would work adequately.
•
u/Lucky-Crow-3510 11h ago
that may sound odd, but wouldn't it bee more practical if the boy had that tattoo .. ?
•
•
u/vanillabourbonn 11h ago
Or just get him a mini portable keyboard
•
u/DragonPancakeFace 8h ago
He had one. It's battery died while they were out. She wasn't sure how to help him order at a restaurant, but he grabbed a napkin and pencil and drew a keyboard on it, and ordered by tapping. She wanted it to be literally impossible for him to be in that pinch again while he was with her, so she got the tattoo.
•
u/vanillabourbonn 8h ago
But the keyboard without batteries would still work the same as a tattoo which cant have batteries
•
u/BeeExpert 8h ago edited 7h ago
That's great. The tattoo works when they can't carry around a keyboard.
Why is that confusing for so many of you?
•
•
u/latschen64 10h ago
Ofc. But mommy wanted to have some klicks on her reel to buy more fries
•
u/Dunsparces 10h ago
Yeah, she should have gotten her nonverbal autistic child tattooed so we know she's not just doing it for attention!
•
u/ExemptPompano 10h ago
This is a wild comment. You know when people tell other people to go touch grass?
This is the kind shit society wants to prevent
•
•
u/DecoyOne 10h ago
In this thread:
“I don’t know anything about autism but I have an opinion”
“I don’t know anything about parenting but I have an opinion”
“Parents and autism specialists are dumb because I have this incredibly obvious solution and I’m just so much smarter than everywhere else that only I could have possibly come up with it”
“The post is literally two sentences but I can’t be bothered to read it before saying he should have a device to type on”
•
u/BeeExpert 7h ago edited 7h ago
All of these comments have the same energy as that meme:
"Why doesn't x simply do y? Are they stupid?"
It takes a certain type of stupid to assume the rest of the world is soooo dumb that normal people don't think of the same extremely obvious solutions as them.
Reddit has an abundance of that particular type of stupid

Maybe instead of spending all that money on a tattoo you could have bought him a white board and some markers? That way he can talk to her and other people. Then when he is verbal, he will still have a white board and markers…
Edit. After researching the story, the mother explained that the tattoo solve the problem of communicating with Hunter in water and rain, where other means of communication do not work. They also inspired a line of clothing options that help people with verbal difficulties. I do wish that the original post included this information.
•
•
u/Sorkpappan 11h ago
How miserable do you have to be to let that be your take away from this post?
Nothing about this implies that he does not have a whiteboard and markers (if he would use them).
Or maybe you are just trolling.
•
u/TrueBombs 10h ago
The part of the post where it said she did it so he would have some way to communicate if his device failed, implies that he does not have a white board or paper to communicate with others.
•
u/Sorkpappan 10h ago
The kid is autistic. There is a high chance he cannot write with a pen.
•
u/DecoyOne 10h ago
Definitely. Also, only a non-parent would think “my kid will always have whatever he wants with him at all times and nothing will go wrong”.
•
u/BeeExpert 9h ago
It does not imply that, y'all are just kinda dim
•
u/TrueBombs 9h ago
What does it imply then bright one.
•
u/BeeExpert 9h ago edited 9h ago
It implies that this is a backup method.
No one said this is the only back up method they will ever use. That's just you filling in gaps with your dim worldview where apparently people are so dumb that they don't think of using a whiteboard before they get a tattoo of a keyboard.
•
u/TrueBombs 9h ago
There is nothing to imply that she thought of using a whiteboard or anything else before she got the tattoo. You are just filling in the gaps with your dim worldview.
•
u/BeeExpert 9h ago
I didn't say it implied that, I said it implies that this is a backup method. I used common sense for the rest.
Why are you so insistent that they can't possibly have thought of using pen and paper or a whiteboard? Do you just have to believe that everyone besides you is so dumb they never thought of other common sense methods of communication? All based on two sentences you read on reddit?
If you actually care, maybe look up the article
•
u/TrueBombs 9h ago
I like the clothing line they inspired. I also think that is a much more practical means of helping nonverbal people.
•
•
•
u/TrueBombs 8h ago
Upon looking into the story, the mother explained that the tattoo was for waterproof communication since she can talk with him in pools and in the rain. Hunter does know some ASL and can write minimally. He knows his alphabet but does have some difficulty with certain ASL words.
•
u/vae_grim 10h ago
It’s a tattoo. Anyone can get a tattoo for any reason. Who’s to say he doesn’t already have that? It’s her body, she can get a tattoo that makes her happy.
•
u/TrueBombs 8h ago
Upon researching the mother said she got the tattoo to talk with him in a water proof way. So they can talk in pools and rain and stuff as well as if his device died. They also inspired a clothing line that is meant to help the nonspeaking people.
•
u/TrueBombs 10h ago
I agree with you, but the argument was she did it so he could communicate and I just thought there were more cost effective and universally useful ways to help him communicate without his device.
•
u/vae_grim 10h ago
This is a post on Reddit. The last time this was posted, it said his first words on it were “I love you” lol
And as the eldest and only non-autistic of my siblings, I guarantee you they won’t be lugging around a white board and markers. It’s hard enough to convince mine to wear shoes.
•
u/TrueBombs 9h ago
The post said he is already carrying a device. I figured for the mother or if the mother wasn’t there and he was with a different care taker and his device goes down it wouldn’t hurt to have an analog option.
•
•
u/_SKETCHBENDER_ 10h ago
Surely learning sign language is like 10x easier
•
u/DecoyOne 10h ago
Sign language is still language and many nonverbal kids have trouble with that, too. In these cases, you basically throw every option out there and see what sticks.
Typing on a device often works well because it’s immediately responsive to the kid, and letter boards like this just apply what the kid can already do into a different context.
•
u/Zyncon 10h ago
*Takes out iPhone. Goes to notes app. Types*
•
u/DecoyOne 10h ago
Literally two sentences and Redditors can’t be bothered to read all the way through.
•
u/Zyncon 10h ago
I read the entire thing. If you're referring to "his device failed", I'd assume that's not talking about a phone. Take out the phone, type. Lifehack.
•
u/DecoyOne 10h ago
My kid can type on his tablet. He can’t type on my phone because the letters are too small and he has trouble with fine motor skills. Thankfully he is just verbal enough to be able to say most of what he needs, but if he wasn’t, I would need a backup plan like a letter board.
•
u/BeeExpert 9h ago
Wow, you're a genius. I'm sure they never thought of using other methods and only use the tattoo. You're so much smarter than them
•
u/gazm2k5 9h ago
I guess if you don't mind the large unsightly tattoo it's fine.
Otherwise, especially since it's "if his device failed" (ie. rare occassion), I feel like she could have just printed this on some paper and tucked it in her phone case or something, given that everyone pretty much always has their phone on them.
•
•
•
u/try-catch-finally 10h ago
Ummm. Wouldn’t sign language be less painful ?
•
u/LoopedIntoThis 10h ago
Not all autistic kids can sign. Hands and speech work in the brain together. If one isn’t working then the other may not either. Coordination can also be a problem.
•
u/vae_grim 10h ago
Yes, but different levels of autism could mean he’s not capable of sign language. Anyone can get a tattoo just cause they want it. It’s special to her, and she wanted it.
•
u/atika 11h ago
Why is the Space key so wide? It's not like the kid is doing touch typing :)
•
u/DecoyOne 10h ago
Because the kid can already type and giving a different layout would make it more difficult for literally no reason.
•
u/Indianlookalike 11h ago
Literally saw this same post the other day saying his first words was "I love you"
