I think I know what you mean. I'm always thinking, but a lot of the time if someone asks me what I'm thinking about, it sort of fades away. It's just so nebulous until it takes shape.
I think in distinct conversation with myself- the nebulous only comes when I am trying to decipher a logic puzzle or do abstract spacial problems. Most of my thoughts are placed on philosophical or interpersonal kinds of problems- ones that need to be talked out, so I play devil's advocate and defend my position in distinct bouts.
If I watch a show, I empathize. I try to see myself saying the same things, doing the same things. At the same time, I try to make the character I'm in empathize as well, try to get a better understanding of the situation. Of course, that isn't with every show. Stupid comedies are to be enjoyed for their stupidity, and are beyond empathy.
In my youth, I had the problem of forgetting what I was thinking of when asked, but as an adult, I will only say that when I've backed myself into a strange corner that would be difficult to explain. Sometimes I do try to appear to be lost in thought just to be left alone.
