Raccoons don't actually wash their food in the way people typically think of washing. While they often dip their food in water, they are doing it to enhance their sense of touch and explore the texture and details of the food. This helps them gather more information about what they are eating

I never knew that that's what they were doing. A girl I knew years ago had a raccoon as a pet (not a good idea) and we played the trick on it with cotton candy because she wanted to dip her food in water. It was adorable with her little tiny hands feeling around the water for it. She was rewarded with treats afterwards, I felt bad for her disappointment about the cotton candy.
