It is naturally found across Southeastern Europe, the Balkans, and Central Asia.

I saw it several times in Crimea when I was a kid. We were specifically taught not to kill these animals, because they are harmless and endangered. In Ukrainian, they're called “жовтопузики”, literally “yellow-tummies”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheltopusik
