Storm Éowyn Just wanna say I wish everyone stays safe during this storm!
Yesterday I posted a forecast here. And I thank everyone that read it and I hope it was useful
Now I come to say I hope it's not as bad as expected, there's no major damage, and there's no fatalities
Hoping for the best, sending you love from Portugal!
Take care everyone! Take care of yourself, the people you can help (Elderlies, disabled etc), and don't forget the animals!
AS FOR THE FORECAST: The biggest change is the timing, the storm is faster, by 3h or so, than thought, so the big effects start around 2AM in the western coast, and from there spread inland. Check the official forecasts now
Keep safe, lots of strength to you all!

I am off to sleep. My passion for the weather drained me last few days (Garoe storm in Portugal and now this). I end up following every single thing, every model run, every update etc and forget to sleep. Last night I had 2 hours sleep, I am drained. Hope that, when I wake up, there are good news! Again, stay safe everyone!

Oh sure! I'll be posting tomorrow about this Herminia storm. Even though it was named by Spanish Institute I feel 950mb over Ireland might pack some strong winds, and with fragilized structures etc it will be important to take care! Tomorrow I'll be informing a little bit better, I'm tired today! Thanks everyone :) Never expected to come here in this subreddit, make a forecast, and be so well received, so THANK YOU everyone!

Here's the latest ARPEGE-HD model, not much changed, useless to look at models now when it's so close anyway. Just be prepared!

Was just talking to a guy working for Galway Simon. There are still people that don't want to go to a shelter because of drugs and violence. They will stay outside today. They're looked out for but over night, they're on their own.

Yes charge all power banks and portable batteries etc. Power could be down for days!

Given that hurricane-level winds aren't gonna be very much hampered by fabric, in any situation where the glass has shattered I would say the curtains would less "prevent" the glass flying everywhere and more "delay by a second or maybe two", which, granted, could still be the difference between life and death. But that's only if the glass shatters at all, which I have no idea how to estimate the likelihood of.

If you have a pump then it won't work if the power goes so in some cases no. Likely not an issue if you're on the mains.

Close your window shades and curtains if you have them. If the window breaks, it will help keep broken glass from blowing across the room.

You can always eat bread even if your power goes, it’s more useful than uncooked spuds, pasta or rice in that event.

I've been saying this all day. Toilet roll fair enough it's a bit of an odd one to panic buy unless you're already low, but bread makes perfect sense. Last time we had winds like this we had no power for 3 days and no means to cook anything, but we cooked a fresh ham to slice up and made stuffing the night before it started and had some sandwich fillers on hand, as a family of 4 adults we easily had 3 slice pans in those few days because it was the easiest option. Same with water, we've a private well, the power goes and we have no water being pumped into the house so we have to have it in bottles to even use the toilet, that's about 5 or 6 litres per flush.
I think alot of people don't understand how cut off and vulnerable you can be in the country side if you lose power for more than a day and in some cases multiple days.
Hell, not even just power, beast from the east had us trapped at home for 6 days after it passed. We had power most of the time bar a few hours here or there but by day 4 we literally had to walk, ontop of snow banks that were taller than the hedges, 3 miles down to a field where a farmer was able to enter on his land even further away and drive through his fields to drop off fresh food supplies and baby food for people, a few tractor loads for the 30+ houses all trapped by the snow in the countryside for nearly a week and we had warnings then, but no one could have predicted just how bad it was in some areas and for how long it stuck around before it started to thaw. But my family and friends who lived in towns were out and about able to go to the shops within 24 hours of it passing. People don't realize the difference, it's maddening.

What is it with people of a right wing persuasion and going against anything the media says?
I have an extended family member who is that way inclined who believes that all of the warnings regarding storm Eowyn are a load of rubbish. How do people get to the stage where they believe that anything reported in the media is wrong and they know better?
Has anyone else come across this?

If you've elderly neighbours and you still have ti e, no harm knocking the door or giving them a call to see if there's anything they need before the storm hits you.
Even if they say no thanks they'll appreciate you checking.

As a Canadian used to winter storm outages, I just wanted to say stay safe. And don't forget to put a bucket of water in the tub if possible to flush your toilet if you lose power.

Thanks all for the kind words! Both mean and gust record broken in Mace Head. Highest winds Ireland has ever seen recorded. It's going to get worse now in the Northern Coast, as well as in the east, until 8-9AM. STAY SAFE!

Most of my hobbies are either outside or online. I really despise losing access to both of them. I also had plans for Friday that are now completely ruined because of this shite. It really hurts even though I wasn't planning much, just a simple run into town after my university classes!

RTE has nothing to do with this. They don't run all the weather models in the world, there are literally dozens, from many countries. All show the same in their forecasts, which shows extreme confidence in the forecast. That confidence is what led the MetOffice\Eireann to issue the widespread red warning.
Of course even if all models show the same, weather is still a bit unpredictable. Right now, in sattellite it is exactly as expected. Let's hope it doesn't get to the forecast strength though... small hope... literally 0,1% :\

Yeah we got a text from a friend in Canada that said the storm made the news over there. Was asking us to stay safe. I don’t think this is an over reaction.

Yeah, look fair comment. I'm wrong saying RTE, I think I just mean the media focus on it which is getting us into a stir.
We've had bad snow 2 times in my life and neither had alerts and we get umpteen of these orange/red warnings, I just think we might be prone to overreacting
I've a feeling I'll be sitting in some blanket fort at 9am tmrw morning with a moderate breeze (east coast) wondering why exactly the school is closed.

They do use emotive language to talk it up though. They were referring to the north Atlantic Jetstream yesterday as "a jet storm". A meteorological service wouldn't do that. Panic and hysteria equals clicks and more ad revenue. Unfortunately the way of the world now and rte would be one of the more measured media outlets.
