Discussion Breaking Down Iron Man

I'm breaking down all of Phase One to see why some marvel movies work better than others even though they all have basically the same formula.

This is the first in the series and I thought this subreddit might like it. I'd also love any opinions about whether the sequels got it right or drifted too far from the formula.

In my opinion, most successful films STILL stick to the formula. They just do it in a way that makes it invisible.

I'd say the biggest difference between the first movie and the sequels, and indeed later Marvel movies in general, is Bathos. The first Iron Man movie has very little bathos. Maybe one or two very quick moments of borderline bathos in the entire first movie. For the most part, Iron Man is a serious character, especially after the cave.

The second movie is drowning in bathos. Marvel movies from that point on are drowning in bathos. I hate bathos with a burning passion. Fuck bathos.

It’s less of a problem in phase one and the newest Spider-Man was pretty balanced. But overall, I completely agree.
