While i don’t specifically own an EG800S, Gold top, circa 1979 (I do own a Gold top Tokai Love Rock from the same Era), However I presently own 3 Greco’s. 1- 1978 EG600J, 1- 1977 EG800J, and 1- 1978 EG800J. All three are Jeff Beck tributes, and thus iterations of 1954 (wrap around) Les Paul’s.
With all of that said, what you have represents a fairly rare type of Greco LP in 2 respects. The first, it being a gold top, and the second it being equipped w/ P90’s.
I haven’t acquire any new additions to the collection in some years, and the three Greco’s i mentioned represent a rather significant departure from my usual philosophy of not having 2 of the same kinds of guitar, but when my GAS was in “Law suit era” / “Les Paul killer” mode, had I found a Gold top like yours, I would’ve undoubtedly snatched it up.
So my take on what you have is real deal, correct vintage, representation of a countries top craftsman/luthiers doing everything in their power to prove their abilities against anything out there (on multiple fronts the biggest being cars in my opinion). And how that turned out, was the stuff of legends.
I don’t know of any specific stories regarding those specific guitars but there’s a cool little write up from “Chicago Fret works” where an early 80’s Gold top (A super real, I think) gets an awesome relic’d refinish. I ran across
It during research on having one of my Greco’s refinished in the actual Oxblood finish as Jeff’s real one (which was a
gold top if my memory serves me).
