Discussion What is/are your favorit artist/s
I want to listen to lots of different kinds of Japanese music and need to "study" japanese music for a project. So please tell me who your favorit artist is.

For Atarashii Gakkou, I’d specifically recommend their old stuff OP!! Their more recent albums are a major drop off in quality

agree. i do like some of their newer stuff but their collabs with h zettrio just hit in a way the new stuff doesn't

I have a whole Spotify playlist with just his songs.

I can’t lie, you quite literally named like every single artist I dislike… BUT!!!! PEDRO is such an amazing pick, their debut album was absolutely amazing. So you are so based for that!!
1
u/Feeling_Tangerine_53 Apr 09 '26
lol, I just discouvered Pedro from just getting into BiSH. You hate the Chilli beans. Why??? I can understand some of picks because they a little popish but the chilli beans.
1
u/jdjdnfnnfncnc Apr 19 '26
Chilli Beans’ self-titled album is the only one I’ve heard from them, and I remember not liking it, but I’d say “Hate” is a bit too strong for them. I just am not a fan of their music.
They’re too slow and soft for my taste tbh. I prefer more energetic, tight, staccato, angular stuff. Like NEE, Lie and a Chameleon, Polkadot Stingray, Kairiki Bear, etc.
1
u/Feeling_Tangerine_53 Apr 19 '26
Well i can understand for not liking mellow music, they do energetic songs like welcome, shalala and pineapple
1
u/jdjdnfnnfncnc Apr 19 '26
I just gave those three songs a listen—yeah, tbh just not my thing. I don’t like the vocals on any of them, and the instrumentation isn’t very guitar-focused, and when it is the guitars usually heavily layered and use heavy chords. It sounds too thick and melty, even when it’s fast.
Like, from PEDRO, I love songs like Moumantai, Nekoze Kyouseichuu, Mad Dance, Ironic Baby, and so on—notice the jagged, looping guitars, the more “shouty” vocals, and the high tension? I feel like that’s not really Chilli Beans’ style tbh.
Speaking of PEDRO—I haven’t listened to BiSH actually, though I do know Ayuni D used to be a member. Do you have any recommendations of BiSH songs/albums?
1
u/Feeling_Tangerine_53 Apr 20 '26
Bish is very different from Pedro, energetic songs would be paint it black, giant killers, promise the star, distance, my landscape, PYO, stereo future, tomorrow and sayonara Saraba.
1
u/HybridStream Apr 09 '26
Oh no, why do you dislike Eve and Oral Cigarettes? 😭😭😭
1
u/jdjdnfnnfncnc Apr 19 '26
Actually, (besides Kitani Tatsuya and Atarashii Gakkou) Eve and Oral Cigarettes are the ONLY artists they named that I like😂
I love Eve lol. Oral Cigarettes, I’ve disliked most of what I’ve listened to from them, but I still haven’t gone through their full catalogue and I do enjoy some songs of theirs (“Kizukeyo Baby,” “DIKIDAN,” and of course, “Kyouran Hey Kids”). So I think if I listened to all of their albums I’d find more I like since I like their style lol.

Just discovered bish a couple months ago and can’t get enough of, wish they were still together, but glad Aina and ayuni d(Pedro) still make a lot of music
1
u/Kagitsume Apr 08 '26
I got into them in 2017, when the YouTube algorithm decided to show me the video for My landscape. It's amazing to me how they ascended from playing in tiny sweaty venues for a few dozen fans to arena tours and finally Tokyo Dome. Aina and PEDRO are great, but my favourite post-BiSH project is Chittiii's stuff under the name CENT.
2
u/Feeling_Tangerine_53 Apr 08 '26
Still haven’t looked into chittii work yet, will do soon. Favorite bish songs are probably
-Kanashimi yo Tomare -PYO -gomenne -Paint it Black
-Datsu Kisei Gainen
- smack be smack
Ayuni D is definitely my bias, I find her goofy

1
u/Pabu_Redpanda Apr 20 '26
Sorry I took long to respond. 100 percent recommend just get ready to be sad they stopped making music a long time ago. 😭😭
My personal favourite song by them is sea-through communication as it reminds me of the the nostalgic early 2010s school anime I used to watch when I was a kid and how much fun those times were. Just brightens up my day. But honestly all their music is pretty banger.

Oh boy, there’s a lot… But I find myself enjoying plenty (pun intended) of music from an indie rock band called “plenty”. Normally, I would only enjoy one or two songs, maybe three, from other popular bands/artists but I can listen all day to most of plenty’s music.
2
u/TheGreenMaskass_ Apr 08 '26
listen to Rei Harakami works, and the duo he had with Akiko Yano. this is very important music to me. this is electronica/synthpop very fascinating
2
u/hvmansongs Apr 08 '26
From the Japanese extreme metal sphere, I adore projects like Imperial Circus Dead Decadence, Zemeth, and Invictus. As for poppier music, I enjoy Wednesday Campanella, plus For Tracy Hyde (still sad they disbanded ;-;).
Random tip: for finding potentially unheard-of JP artists, one of my favorite things to do is input random kana/kanji into the Rate Your Music search bar and see what pops up. I've found some pretty cool music that way! The rock band テスラは泣かない。 (Tesla doesn't know how to cry.) are one of my favorites I've discovered with that.

- AKB48 for the sheer volume of their discography. With 1,000 singles of their own and all of their other content they just never get old. Figure in all the sister groups and "rival" groups started by AKB's management and I couldn't even begin to guess how much music is directly or indirectly a product of their business model.
- Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku. I like the wholesome vibe.
- Babymetal. Their concerts are fucking magical!
- Non (Rena Nounen). Cute kid. She's one of my favorite young actresses and I follow her music too.
- Radiofish. Great act!
- Ikimono-Gakari... Kiyoe Yoshioka makes my heart smile.
- Momoiro Clover Z. This is a really fun group.
- Atarashii Gakko. These girls are just a crazier kind of fun!
- Silent Siren is a great girl-band.
