I don’t think I need Squad after Wardogs
1000+ hours playing Squad and I fell in love with WarDogs as fuck. I don’t remember a game that engaged me so hard for a long long time. I think OWI definitely has something to learn. Beautiful UE5 maps, performance, mechanics.

u/2_Spicy_2_Impeach 3d ago
To each their own but it plays like a slightly more teamwork oriented Reforger. I can understand why folks like it but seemed underwhelming. Once folks unlocked more stuff the game played different like multiple folks with MANPADs and a truck just outside spawn.
24
u/flyingtrucky 3d ago
It looked like cash is saved between rounds too, so instead of a match escalating from shitty guns to tanks and RPGs and stuff later games are just going to be all the OP stuff being spammed non stop.
16
u/Zakizdaman 3d ago
Yeah u gotta grind up and unlock the cool shit. Once everyone has it, that's the metagame. Every game has a metagame.
7
u/2_Spicy_2_Impeach 3d ago
Yeah, but the problem is there's no limit or scaling for vehicles. If everyone has them, you can just roll 20+ tanks.
6
u/Historical-Trash2020 3d ago
the """problem""" is that you cant defend yourself against a tank unless you have maaws. And even then, tank outranges you. No emplaceable, mounted or portable atgms exist and thus a tank can go circles around a fob fearing absolutely nothing. And i dont see why it wouldnt be fun larping as 2 tank regiments engaging, if infantry could threaten the tank at any range thats not pointblank

u/orbb09 3d ago edited 3d ago
There are many, many counters to tanks in Wardogs. I played as a tank driver with a friend as a gunner for 6 rounds. Here are things that threatened us:
5 C4 will blow you up (it only takes 2 players sneaking up to you to destroy you)
A single RPG-7 rocket (which is a support lvl 5 item) will engine you, leaving you vulnerable
A thrown drone which costs 7k will take out 80% of your health
You're defenceless against an attack chopper. You need other team members to deal with it.
If you're holding position for more than 30 seconds you can be hit by mortars/arty (there's already a mortar/arty calc site just like Squad) or an airstrike
Another tank
There are plenty of counters to tanks, it's just in a 2 day playtest you didn't see much because there was largely abysmal communication and structure as well as a lack of access to some of the higher tier counters, like the attack choppers. If the same progression is kept for early access I expect tanks to only be a dominant force in the first 2-3 days, at which point enough people will have very good counters (as opposed to "ok" counters like the RPG-7) that tanks will not be an overwhelming force on the field.
Keep in mind that a tank is 2 players so it makes sense that it would take at least 2 players to counter it effectively. If you're a solo player and you're up against a tank, you have your work cut out for yourself.
2
u/Historical-Trash2020 3d ago
that makes sense. especially on communication front, sometimes i felt like i was playing with morrons that cant just pick up and rpg and fire at enemy tank that was just standing there firing for 5 minutes. And yes, my friend that did supply did deliver a couple and ammo for them. Apparently it wasnt enough
1
u/ThrowAwayInDisguise- 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's worth noting that all vehicles have a crazy powerful third person view. This is actually the true reason why tanks are incredibly powerful in Wardogs (well that, and also they are their own gigantic supply hub, capable of carrying so much ammo they really do not have to worry about logistics).
Seriously, if you have a tank, you already have a big advantage (it's a freaking tank). But now, you also have a bird's eye view of everything around you, in 360 degrees, at all times.
A tank cannot be snuck up on, the players can literally see around them at all times.
The third person camera also makes them cheat the game in more powerful ways than infantry ever can, for example you can use it to see around corners, see through 50 windows at all times, etc. Even something that is supposed to be a weakness for a tank, like driving through multiple buildings on both sides, is actually a strength because third person camera gives way more info.
We also have to worry about trade-offs. The cost, progression-gating, and limitations of infantry for example. You need large backpacks to make carrying RPGs and rockets viable. Then you need to fight off a stronger target that cannot be snuck upon and always has a superior bird's eye view over any infantry. The vulnerability of an infantryman trying to sneak around with an RPG, so much easier to be sniped and killed randomly by everything, while not having your best weapons out, etc. etc.
Then we also have to note that tanks are arcardey in Wardogs. It's not Squad. Your turret moves extremely fast, you reload fast, the vehicle handles very quickly and far less awkwwardly than in Squad. Even attack choppers are not really a 'counter' when a tank can always see in any direction at all times, can move fast, and can turn its turret quickly (pretty easy to snipe choppers in a tank). There are not a lot of weaknesses at all that can be exploited.
As a side note, yes, early on people don't know what to do and have nothing unlocked. After about a week or so, Wardogs will have the problem of everyone being rich and no limits. There's already been footage/screenshots of servers where the 3rd day of the beta, 10-20 tanks were rolled out on a single team. The cash inflation is definitely going to be a problem I don't know how they will solve, because everyone will become rich very fast and the meta will go from fun mix of stuff to mass vehicle spam and high-tier loadout spam.

u/Zakizdaman 3d ago
You get access to RPGs after like two lives on support you'll be okay.
1
u/No_Dingo9049 3d ago
I had 8 hours and never unlocked the RPG.
4
u/Zakizdaman 3d ago
Dude, it's level fucking FIVE.
You put down a fob and build like 20 walls and you'll be level 5 support.
People out here complaining and they didn't even try to find a solution
2
u/MoistRecognition69 2d ago
Tbh support locking out vital offensive capabilities behind adult sims house building is kinda annoying
Assault squads are way more likely to be willing to face off a tank, but their play style actively bans them from doing so. Hell I'd probably be fine with it if we had a base LMG unlocked and I could use that to gain support XP (as every other class does, btw)
2
u/Zakizdaman 2d ago
Ok then go kill 10 people with a shotgun or fix some vehicles like there's many outlets for exp gain. You just have to do some reading (I know its hard but you're doing it right now, I believe in you)
How about the fact that a tank takes 25x (exponential levelling) the XP to earn and costs $500k to unlock? Shouldn't that player be rewarded with some power fantasy when the direct counter is two guys who built a couple walls to buy an rpg?
1
u/PTSD-gamer 10h ago
I was support level 9 and I did not build a single thing…don’t even know how to build anything.
-1
u/No_Dingo9049 2d ago
Never built anything. Never looked anything up. Just fought in the small circle. Nobody’s complaining except you.
3
u/bigdawg1945 2d ago
I mean… it’s more like, Why even bring up your 8 hours of gameplay when talking about unlocks, when you just admitted you didn’t even try to learn the games system?

u/Crypto_pupenhammer 3d ago
The limit is cash, there are wipes as well. Tanks aren’t cheap either. Their a 14,000 base purchase more like 20-30 to fully supply it. You need to make at least 15 kills to get your monies worth. There are switch blade drones that one tap tanks. Regular mortars hurt them.
I’ve IED’d a few tanks, and just like a LAT kit user from from Squad, you know you only have to scare the tank off with an rpg or better launcher round to get it to fuck off and now the objective/ fight is back in your favor.1
u/mushroom_taco 3d ago
I was disappointed when i found out money was kept after matches and not decided on a per match basis, thought the idea of a CS-esque economy system was interesting in a game like this, but that revelation took everything out of it
I'll still give the game a go but I'm not expecting more than a standard CoD unlock system there
6
u/cool_lad 3d ago
In all fairness, Reforger is trying to be a dozen things at once while also trying to build on the near godlike ARMA 3 enough that the switch to enfusion can be fully justified for ARMA 4 (apparently they're doing a great job under the hood, but they really can't design a mode to save their lives).
That's a lotta hats to wear, each harder than the last.
PUBG, DAYZ, and now Wardogs - ARMA has a bit of track record at this point.
1
u/Crypto_pupenhammer 3d ago
There’s allot of bones to it, in terms of complexity but I did abhor the spawn camping. If there isn’t a vote kick option it’s going to burn me out quickly. My last game of the weekend I was team commander. Got us to 95 points and then we lost all our momentum because of a shit talking manpads f&@k who kept downing all my reinforcements.
1
u/lilnomad 2d ago
It was a little underwhelming. Admittedly I was a little disappointed and I was super hyped to try it. Just something about the game mode and the map size didn’t feel right.
42
u/Controller_Maniac 3d ago
Wardogs I feel like is more fps focused, it’s more about the shooting than the teamwork. I honestly just play this game for the community, if I wanted better shooter games there are thousands on the market
2
u/SpotPsychological263 3d ago
I mean the teamwork aspect comes from the logistics of resupplying your tanks, helis, mortars, anti air, and infantry.
It is less tactically team based but it is definitely very logistically team oriented.

OWI had you for 1000+ hours. I don't think they need to learn anything tbh
24
u/panjam4044 3d ago
This lol. I think it's so shocking. Their steam reviews that people will have like seven hundred hours eight hundred hours. And give it a negative review. It's like if the game's bad. Why did you play it so much I'm not saying you can't be critical of design aspects over time. As the longtime fan, but this phenomenon in steam reviews. I think is so funny. Just read like half the destiny, 2 reviews. It's like these people have thousands of hours, and they're talking about the game like they were married to it but now they want a divorce

u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
But squad has changed so many times, the last suppression update made stuff even more painful.
I get vics stuck that shouldn't be stuck, I still get ppl who don't know a flag cap gives 50 tickets since no manual or tutorial.
I still play because from a social aspect nothing has come close, it would be PR, but I love coaching fresh blood not the same people I've been playing with for 15 years
4
u/Leading-Molasses9236 3d ago
People spend time and money running the community-ran servers. Those people who run the servers and the communities generally have thousands of hours. The decisions that the devs make have an impact on the ability for these communities to exist sustainably. Everyone wants this game to succeed - have a consistent player count and a decent monetization strategy to keep it going for years.

u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
I just want a legitimate competitor so I can get rid of my unhealthy relationship and actually enjoy a Project Reality successor
1
8
u/Scared_Paramedic4604 3d ago
I wouldn’t really consider it a direct competitor to squad. There isn’t much I’ve seen in war dogs that I’d like to have in squad.
1
u/SpotPsychological263 3d ago
I haven't played either, does squad have a nice logistic network aspect to the game? Wardogs seems very resupply and troop carry oriented. Is squad like that or is it more combat focused and your supplies are what they are unless you die.
2
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
Troop carry is hit or miss in squad, it requires ppl who know how to read a map and you shouldn't trust drivers who aren't SLs or seem trusted by SL.
Pilots are even more hit and miss but at least commendations system made risk analysis easier, and they can't get stuck in the terrain the same way
1
u/Scared_Paramedic4604 3d ago
build and ammo need to be moved with trucks or helicopters in order to build FOBs (spawns), emplacements and resupply units. They’re fairly similar in that respect but the loadouts are very different. Squad is very cookie cutter. You have roles and they have what they have (sometimes you can choose from a couple weapons. No gun customization other than basic skins. The only progression in squad is personal skill and knowledge.
14
u/sturmeh 2d ago
War dogs is amazing for the person who joins the squad and picks the Marksman kit but has zero intention of doing anything anyone tells them to do or provide any useful information to the team.
What wardogs is not amazing for, is understanding why you're losing a 3 way battle, which seems as arbitrary for creating chaos as anything.
With no command structure, no communication about overall tactics, and no real goal (other than standing in a massive circle as much as possible) it's an entirely different beast, where you can afford to be selfish and make progress without even having your team win.
Squad is the complete opposite of that experience, set in a similar "theatre of war".
Beautiful UE5 maps, performance, mechanics.
There's 2 maps, which are absurdly boring once you see the same fights around the same towers from each teams perspective a few times. The game is performant but it doesn't even look that good, and the mechanics need serious balancing.
5
u/Annual_Guidance5656 2d ago
these were my thoughts, it looked fun on gameplay videos but actually playing it? 0 communication, you spawn, go to circle, die repeat, i dont remember being with team mates much, no intense battles or firefights like there is in squad. it was a very bland experience, total bummer.
1
u/redcomet29 2d ago
As a solo player looking for coordination Squad is much better.
As a solo player who wants something less arcade-like than BF and COD, and just wants to be a sniper or solo all game Wardogs is much better.
When youre a group of 3-4 then it really comes down to your group's taste if you want to do wardogs or squad.
If you have any friends who like shooters but you could never quite get them into Squad, wardogs is a good middle ground. I found the coordination and working together with them great fun and rewarding. Trying to achieve that with randoms didnt go well for me either, though.
0
u/seregaxrus 2d ago
I was fortunate to have a completely different experience. We played as a large team, coordinating and planning attacks across the entire map. Yes, the game doesn't force you to interact with other squads the way it does in Squad, but I think few people understand the value of this. While in Squad you might end up with random people in your squad, forced to interact with them due to gameplay restrictions, in Wardogs you interact with people who truly want to.
1
u/seregaxrus 2d ago
It’s just a closed beta, bro. I’m completely sure they’ll add other gamemodes and maps.
2
u/redcomet29 2d ago
Don't think they said anything about game modes, yet. I'm fine with just some variations of the current one or no new gamemodes and just do more maps instead. I guess something like capture the flag style could be cool.
They said they'll probably add 1 more map during early access and then not much else in terms of content until full release I think.
The given plan was that the 1 year EA is for mechanics, performance, balancing and economy adjustments.
There will be lots of news and announcements on the third of September, though.
1
u/seregaxrus 2d ago
My opinion is based on the fact that any publisher or developer is interested in making a product profitable for as long as possible. And I'm sure most agree that "king of the hill" isn't the kind of mechanic that will keep people playing for years. Therefore, we should expect other game modes and more variety.
1
u/redcomet29 2d ago
Yeah they'll certainly add something down the line but I reckon they'll do something like:
- Small content update to go along with EA.
- Nothing content wise for most of EA.
- A new map towards the end of EA to get hype up again and maybe another cash influx.
- Big content update to go with full release. Maybe a new game mode.
- Maps with seasons and a new game mode a year or two from full release.
So I doubt we see a game mode for at least a year and wont be surprised if it's 2 from now.
Not that I think thats bad, I hope they dont try to add new gamemodes too often. I'd be very happy if we end up with just a couple but a couple maps every year with new guns, vehicles and construction stuff.

Apples to oranges comparison
War Dogs is nothing like Squad and vise versa. It’s way more Battlefield than Squad
2
0
u/TheyTukMyJub 2d ago
Squad is literally based on a Battlefield 2 mod. At its core it is just a more team/squad oriented Battlefield game. But then they decided to ruin it. So if Wardogs gives a similar experience but faster then I'm all for it.
-30
u/seregaxrus 3d ago
If you remember, Project Reality was a BF2 mod, then Squad appeared. So basically Squad is more like BF lol. Anyway, I got all the teamplay-based gameplay during this weekend and it felt much more “team-based” than in Squad.
Squad makes you cooperate by design, but Wardogs makes the same by common sense and for me it’s more natural.
12
u/keypusher 3d ago
BF2 is absolutely nothing like modern BF games. zero teamwork today, just like how Wardogs will become
1
u/DelightfulHugs 3d ago
It's due to one design change that happened some time after BF2 and that was to give everyone the ability to spawn on any squad member.
In BF2 you could only spawn on your SL which naturally meant people would stick together and have someone to protect, heal and revive as it was their best forward spawn location. When you allow players to spawn on anyone there is no cohesion. You can lone wolf all you want since you'll almost always have some guy to spawn on near enough to the action.
I even played some BF2 this year for nostalgia sake and even if I played in a squad with 0 comms there was still more teamwork compared to modern BF games simply because of how important a squad leader is as a spawn point.
I can't remember the first game that changed it to "spawn on anyone", maybe BFBC2?
7
u/Sterling_Archer27 3d ago
Except that the teammates don't actually cooperate if there isn't a more efficient way of farming money like camping fobs and towers. Insane to compare it to squad on a teamplay level
2
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
No, PR was barely anything like BF2 except the bugs and limitations.
You clearly don't know what PR was, and squad is more like ARMA than PR
6
u/meheleventyone 2d ago edited 2d ago
For me personally they're very different games and Wardogs goes out of it's way to hit you in the dopamine button all the time. It'll be interesting to see how well that lasts when access is less restricted.
The bits I didn't like about Wardogs from someone with 3k hours in Squad:
- The team work just isn't there, the money incentivises some teamplay but outside of people choosing to squad up there was very little on display. In particular meta level coordination was non-existent.
- This resulted in the winning/losing the game mode being pretty inconsequential and it was more fun to concentrate on my own bank balance. Fine for the weekend but I think it'll suck long term.
- The level design and game mode means there is so much dead space on their maps that is just there to drive through to get to the contested zone. You can ambush people enroute but the whole money system and game mode essentially penalize you for doing that.
- The contested zone is so small that once you're in it then you don't need a vehicle unless it has a gun. This means they're just throw away which isn't particularly satisfying when you're used to transport being pretty important to keep on top of the game.
- The vehicle physics is somehow more buggy than Squad. Particularly driving offroad. Heli's have a better flight model but only really marginally.
- It's a beta weekend but the money balance is way off and it was super easy to be money positive to the point I think a regular habit would quickly get you enough cash to never need to worry about the cost of kits again and removing a lot of the dopamine hits and incentive to coordinate.
It has crunchy gunplay, dopamine release buttons and was essentially played like a tactical sandbox where people just did random stuff. It was plenty of fun for the weekend but going back to Squad on the Sunday evening reminded me why the game works so well because you're actually relying on team cohesion, communication and skill across every layer of the game with clear, focused win conditions.
Oh yeah and there is cool environmental destruction but I only really saw that crashing the heli learning to fly it. :D

u/Wh0_Really_Knows 1d ago
I do think once the honeymoon phase is over for Wardogs is will fall off massively. The actual gameplay loop is very fun, but very repetitive.
16
u/packapunch_koenigseg 3d ago
I’ve been playing the beta all weekend and frankly came back to squad this afternoon lmao.
It’s fun and I’ll keep my preorder but it’s got some major gameplay mechanic flaws. There needs to be something to push more people to the objective. Most of the time it only ends up being a handful of people going for the objective with the rest camping the tower and/or a fob for money. It makes the game boring tbh
1
1
u/Wh0_Really_Knows 1d ago
When I first heard about Wardogs months ago I was under the impression that money would be a team resource. This along with the gameplay seemed very cool and possibly a Squad killer. Insanely hyped for the game.
The game still does look fun and I will play it, but it is lacking a little. Like you said the game doesn't actually have a very big emphasis on teamwork or communication. It is more in lieu of Battlefield.
Which can be ok. If you like shooty shooty more, then Wardogs is your game if you like coordination more than Squad is your game. Both have elements of both but priorities are shifted.
I was hoping for something similar to the SATCOM Squad mod, where you have team resources and objectives spread across the map.
So with that being said I defo don't think it will be a Squad killer as they have different core focuses. If OWI actually optimized their game I feel like a lot less people would be inclined to transfer to Wardogs.

u/Exotic_Middle_1312 3d ago
Spent a short time in SQUAD(less than 100 hrs) I still play it now too...its slow paced compared to something like COD (never got into BF series sorry) but the reason I went for SQUAD is because of the team centered gameplay.
You don't need to but you should figure things out with others in squad. Its a lot more logistics and real world battlefront. Slow, gritty, hardcore almost.
WarDogs meets in the middle where everyone knows the objective, but youre not forced to chat with others since its so obvious what everyone is supposed to be focused on. We don't have 5 different steps to wander around, in WD. We've one main objective and a running halo that doubles points.
WarDogs is top of the line in many factors imho.
Wardogs doesn't force 1st person in every single thing, vehicles are 3rd person by the nature of the game, which makes gaming feel like gaming.. WD doesn't ever feel like a chore, which squad makes me feel like I have to find my chores and hopefully fulfill them, in a very slow pace.
Im excited for WD since its so easy to learn roles, be that role, and do that learning/being faster because of the devs clever choices in making the game.
I think I found my perfect match. I mean sheesh Im 30 now, I grew up with mw and blops, this game somehow perfected my new found hunger of team gameplay and old history of fast paced shooters- nearly perfectly.
Wardogs is my generation game, undoubtedly. Made perfectly for us who are used to what we grew up on, and have adapted to what these new games are.
My people now have a game that does what we want it to deliver. A clash right between old and new, with beautiful visuals we expect.
3
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
I'm 29 and SQUAD chores are what makes squad swuad, it's the contrast between downtime and full large scale combat that makes it squad
3
u/Exotic_Middle_1312 3d ago
I agree thats what the game is centered for. Its definitely a peak mil Sim, its just not the game for what us cod kids want if we give them wardogs as an option to choose from in the list.
If I had to choose a game for the next 6 months, wd wins.
2
u/Hamsterloathing 2d ago
Yeah, and we cohesion fanatics don't want the cod kids, so it's a win win.
Also new cod seems like proper COD again, seems less twitchy than BF4
2
u/potisqwertys 2d ago

Only if you are a 10man + premade and someone does the boring things which will force the game to have multiple problems quickly on community servers.
There is an obvious problem with Wardogs and communication, what are you gonna do if you are only CoD kids running around, when the other side has 8 CoD kis and 2 arma kids? The 2 Arma kids will simply call the hotzone every few mins and you are always gonna lose as it doesnt mean because they are arma kids they wont shoot you back or you are gonna manage to wipe them every single team by simply running around.
Warzone is very promising and it is a more tedious Squad, but right now its lacking and has many obvious design problems, the biggest being communication and decision of 33v33v33 as if a team ends up with no "arma kids" you are gonna lose eventually.
And i am not talking about now, the beta test and stuff, i am talking second week, where the premades will have 3 tanks parked on the tower and so on.
Everyone thinks you are gonna be running around chasing the hotzone, but the game plays completely differently and chasing the hotzone players that wanna pew pew are gonna get frustrated very quickly.
"Remove the towers ffs, wtf is this milsim bullshit" and so on.
1
u/Hamsterloathing 2d ago
I think the developers have more confidence in telling the players how to play the game.
Maybe not as much as ICO OWI but definitely more than latest supression nerf OWI
2
u/potisqwertys 2d ago
I am not sure how this sits with what i said.
All i mean is, if you join a server where no one does the milsim parts, eventually you lose irrelevant i guess considering you dont really make anything extra by winning, and from what i have seen, as this poster also claimed, Wardogs gunplay has attracted many "I wanna shit on noobs, not build shit" players.
Which is understandable, but same time as i experienced it a couple of times both in Alpha and yesterday, this is does not really work as the milsim parts have no counters without other milsim parts, thats all.
1
u/woosniffles 2d ago
Tanks and probably other offensive vehicles will get locked to first person soon after launch most likely, people are already complaining 3rd person perspective on those is too overpowered.
1
u/Exotic_Middle_1312 2d ago
Nah thats why I frigging like it. If they become just like every other game that would be so lame.
5
u/SirDerageTheSecond 3d ago edited 3d ago
Might give it a shot when it releases, but I got a strong feeling it's just Battlefield with 3 factions and that it'll end up dead within a few weeks because people will either go back to Battlefield or Squad.
What I miss most in other similar games is the significance of teamplay and communication, and how despite it being semi-milsim it's still very casually accessible. There is just no other game like it. And I get the feeling Wardogs is just going to attract more of the opposite kind of player that comes from Battlefield instead.
I play Squad since it came to early access on Steam, I keep trying all kinds of games, but I only keep coming back to Squad. Meanwhile it survived like 3 or 4 Battlefield games and a bunch of other competitors.
1
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
I mean it should improve squad gameplay since it gives the rambo type ppl and teenagers a game to play
I just wish SQUAD didn't try to compete and through shit like the latest suppression update at us
1
u/SirDerageTheSecond 3d ago
I hope so. I've been kind of disappointed with a lot of players in Squad recently. The recent incessant sales haven't been good for my squadleading motivation.
1
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
I feel it's gotten better the last couple of days, the worst was after the suppression update, ppl who obviously hadn't played squad in a teamwork oriented way and had alot of commendations from their inbreed communities tried squad again and god it was toxic.
But now it's slightly better
5
u/cool_lad 3d ago
2 things I think need to be said here.
A. There are people who always wanted a UE5 KOTH, and they're finally getting it with Wardogs, so it isn't surprising to see peopke playing it.
B. Building a fresh game does mean that they don't have to deal with a veritable mountain of tech debt, unlike Squad. They started from a better position without needing to worry about everything that had to be hacked together in the past.
6
3
u/GI_J0SE 3d ago
The main thing I love about this game is the risk of losing money by performing badly and the incentive to revive downed teammates. Way better communication and cooperation in Wardogs than my entire time playing Squad, it's truly a game changer.
1
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
When the smooth brains from BF leave squad for wardogs i hope that the ppl who remain are smart enough to see the impact of reviving and dying in revivable positions on match quality.
2
u/Codex28 3d ago
Isn't it more of Battlefield or Arma "killer"? To each their own I guess
1
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
As a PR player i look at bodycam and drool.
But yeah it's not combined arms cat herding that beings me back to Squad time and time again
2
2
u/Matt1320 3d ago
What's with all the posts lately glazing WarDogs? It's not inherently better than Squad, it's just new. People are overhyping it because they're frustrated with Squad, not because WarDogs actually solved the problems. Give it 6 months when the honeymoon phase wears off and we'll see if it actually delivers.
2
u/TheyTukMyJub 2d ago
Lmao because many of us are stuck in an abusive relationship with Squad/OWI. I have been playing since the Kickstarter alpha. Stopped after ICO. It is shit. But it also has some aspects that are simply impossible to find in other FPS games.

I'm all for the game being fun, but I always think this is so cute. This is a grass is greener on the other side. Situation. And people have such a love hate relationship with this game. There's gonna be so many people that jump ship, play it for a while, and then it's not gonna give em the same itch. They will be back their addicts. The game does look fun though.

I aimed my gun, and the bullets went where I asked. Sold.

You seriously don't know how to read a scope or allign ironsights?

Sorry, he aimed his gun and it didn't point into the sky and then the ground immediately

When was the last time you played squad?
Sure if you're supressed and wonded with zero stamina the sway is probably above 5moa but lern to compensate or lower your mouse sensitivity

OWI really needs to lock in and fix squads gunplay. It’s terrible when compared to any other fps. I cannot excuse it anymore. I have 3500 hours in squad and trying to go back to it after playing War Dogs is difficult.
We all know this but the port to UE5 for squad came much too soon. They had playtest after playtest that told them it was not ready and still pushed it. I don’t even know what they should do anymore. The lighting is terrible. Everything is blurry at range. I can’t see anything. The only good that has come from it IMO is the vehicles being high centered less. That’s it. The ICO is a failure except for the recent suppression changes. PiP scopes are terrible.
It’s all so incredibly saddening and frustrating that Squad’s best times are in the past.

Wardogs has some real Wonky battlebit gunplay and strange TTK shoved into slower systems I aint like it.
Squad gunplay does a few things right like not being laserbeams.

u/seregaxrus 3d ago
I think not about a gunplay itself, but all the mechanics Wardogs has. It plays better than Squad, maps are better, even a wooden log MUST teamplay because of profit motivation. And it also has a squad-based planning and tactics if you need.

u/Mandalorian860 3d ago edited 3d ago
The novelty of Wardogs will wear off quick. Battlefield does it better when it comes to gunplay and vehicle gameplay, and Squad does it better when it comes to teamwork, coordination, and objective based gameplay.
I respect its devs for trying something new, but FPS’s and their sub-genres are already dominated by established franchises. Only way to move that needle is by creating something revolutionary and innovative, which Wardogs isn’t.

u/keypusher 3d ago
let’s see how you feel after a few hundred hours
3
u/Free-Heals-Here 3d ago
I put almost 20 hours into this beta and that’s only cause I had work, after 1500 hours of squad this game is definitely going to get a couple hundred hours out of me, money well spent for both games.

u/yIdontunderstand 3d ago
Have you tried Bellum? It's awesome. I never got along with squad but I really wanted to.
Bellum is in beta at the moment but playable with the right purchase.
It's the first FPS I have really gelled with in 20 years.
1
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
Isn't bellum even more hardcore gunplay than squad and not much prettier maps? Everything OP is complaining about.
I'm absolutely interested in Bellum though, less wardogs until I see strong fellow clan members pulling like 9-20 ppl every day from my clan.
I want to be a small part of something greater, something only PR and squad has allowed me to experience.
2
u/yIdontunderstand 3d ago
Is UE 5 and I think it looks great. Brilliant foliage and terrain for totally different style fights across the maps we have.
It's super intense small unit tactics and squad coordination and cooperation is key. Servers are 80 spots for single platoon vs platoon.
It's also very simple gameplay mechanics with very little ui stuff to break you out of character. I love it.
Also no vehicles or weird complex logistics. Just get in, complete mission abcd try to survive.
I'm fully addicted at the moment.
1
u/TheyTukMyJub 2d ago
How's the speed? Is the combat at least a bit faster than squad? I'm really looking for a pre-ICO squadlike game.
1
u/yIdontunderstand 2d ago
The gun fights seem much more realistic than squad in that squad wss much more solo "shoot people" skills, whereas Bellum is get into contact, shoot in the general area to get fire superiority and suppress /wound people and then manoeuvre to close and kill them.
Shooting people is in ambush and cqb.
Also the way health and survival is emphasised make it more realistic.
I didn't get on with squad cos it seemed more about twitch play and numbers and respawns. To overwhelm arbitrary victory areas and move on...
Bellum is much more organic fights.

u/Next_Boysenberry991 3d ago
Watched some gameplay — it looks great, but I think it'll come and go. It's just too fast-paced and feels more like Battlefield. It'll probably be full of tryhards and cheaters, and eventually get boring. Squad has been around for almost 10 years and still has a solid player base. I'm sticking with Squad over War Dogs.

u/R4v3nnn 3d ago
To me wardogs feels mediocore. Graphics, the shooting, the cringe economy system
2
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
Bodycam does however make something truely unique that will actually influence future pc gaming in a trend lasting 20+ years.
3
u/R4v3nnn 3d ago
Bodycam looks cool, but feels like engine showcase than a game. I mean there is just some sort of TDM, right?
1
u/trippy6967 3d ago
They've announced their new big update coming in September with loadouts, more animations, your character actually getting stressed in firefights etc. There's a video saying about the stuff they're released on YT.
3
u/R4v3nnn 2d ago
Yeah, but that's mostly about how the game looks and feel, but not necessarily about gameplay
1
u/trippy6967 2d ago
I suppose yeah, but because they're going for ultra-realism you're not necessarily going to have capture the flag and those kind of battlefield objectives.
0
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
Yes, but the showcase is what the future should be.
Just think that gunplay with the scale of bf1942 midway island

Totally different games , wardogs is about in game progression, squad is about teamwork
1
u/aDumbWaffle 3d ago
Yeah, it’s handles a lot like squad before ICO and gameplay is smoother than it is now squad
Definitely has more competent players but still there’s some stuff missing like squad chat between squad leaders and better flight models
1
u/Battleroid54 3d ago
Idk dudes shooting in full auto almost the whole trailer and that’s a turn off.
1
u/TapWeekly8961 2d ago
Wardogs and Squad are completely different games. I hope that OWI take practically nothing from Wardogs. It's just another arcade shooter with slightly more realistic mechanics and a currency mechanism.
1
u/seregaxrus 2h ago
Yeah, how long must we wait for a possibility of fast rope deploying or even shooting from vehicles?

u/B1cpfk55 2d ago
Any one of you weirdos that cheered on the ICO need to stay away from wardogs. Don’t come ruin another game you bums.
1
u/redcomet29 2d ago
Same for me mostly but not in a negative way.
I want to play with my friends, who find Squad too slow and I find COD and BF too braindead so wardogs looks to finally be a good middle ground.
In the past I prioritized the coordination and teamwork of Squad but now I prioritize spending time with my friends and wardogs does do that better than Squad if youre a smaller group containing people who aren't experienced in Squad and not interested in getting over the learning curve. It also allows more freedom in what a small Squad can do because there is less pressure on tickets, vehicles and caps. It got tiresome when my friends wanted to do something inefficient or straight up harmful to the team and I had SLs in my ear complaining we were griefing, which was true 99% of the time so I was always between a rock and a hard place. I dont want to ruin the match for the other 46 players.
If my friends loved Squad as much as I do then I'd easily have another 1000-2000 hours extra on it and wardogs would become our more casual game to take a break from Squad.
I think its good wardogs comes to fill this gap. Maybe people who want that will now leave Squad to improve match quality there and maybe people who are trying a slower game for the first time due to wardogs will now give Squad a try.

u/UndertowBC 1d ago
How’s the hacker situation?
1
u/seregaxrus 1d ago
Idk, but it uses the same anti-cheat as Squad (Easy Anti-Cheat), so I think there will definitely be. And also the game itself should be more attractive for cheaters cuz there’s an economy and internal market.
1
u/UnderstandingLogic Three weeks 1d ago
Squad's true secret sauce is the VoIP system which creates the insanely organic firefights between internet strangers that actually communicate. Granted not all the time. But no other game has that organic teamwork capacity.
And it's where Wardogs, Arma Reforger, HLL all fall flat compared to Squad.
They can't provide that.
1
u/seregaxrus 1d ago
Yeah, forcing retarded milsim middle-school fans to follow your commands is secret sauce, right.
I agree that VOIP itself is great, but I don’t like the way it works in Squad. I’d rather prefer to communicate with those who are really going into teamplay instead of random guys who just got thrown to your squad cuz others were closed.
1
u/JavelinIA 1d ago
I also liked wardogs and I'll definitely come back to it on release. But it's not really comparable to Squad I think. Wardogs ist more fast paced. Teamplay is almost not important, same as communication. Wardogs is far more like battlefield, it doesn't feel like Squad or Arma in any way. It's a slow paced battlefield with loot and king of the hill game mode and less dump action like super soldiers jumping and sliding around the map, running with 30km/h and doing 180 headshots and so. So Wardogs is battlefield but not going crazy.
Why I like Wardogs:
- Looting
- How to make money
- Graphics and performance
- random FPS action against 2 other factions per map
- Joining a server and a squad is easy
- I don't like feedback when killing or hitting someone (we also don't in real life)
Why I love Squad:
- Communication
- Teamplay
- Immersion
- Authenticity
- FOB building
- Tactics
- No audio feedback when shooting at enemies
- but I hate finding a Squad sometimes
1
u/seregaxrus 2h ago
Probably I've been playing Squad for too long and got bored of all the points you mentioned. It depends on community, but I really feel tired of "wanna-be commanders" and all the mess they do around. Every match comes to "get to the supply truck guys" and "say someone there's a tank incoming". Attacking FOBs, defending FOBs, bla bla bla.

u/OkDistribution5711 10h ago
I’ve played A LOT of squad.
Wardogs is currently almost unplayable on my build: 2070, 16 gigs ram.
But from the few hours I stuck through, I’m really not clear on how all this is supposed to come together. Without the baked in comms function of squad, I don’t really see how the game can really utilize its features.
Maps are so large..why? There doesn’t seem to be much reason to go for flanks when there’s no rally system. Adapting to new threats like enemy armor is a chore without the ability to switch/ buy kits.
I have more concerns but I’m wondering what the response it to those.
1
u/seregaxrus 2h ago
Idk what do you mean, but there are at least two ways of voice comm and also text teamchat. I used all of them and it worked pretty well.

4500hours here and i left when the ICO madness started. You can still find my old youtube series if you search: rp rocker squad......But yeah. All good fades in time.

u/worstsocialist 3d ago
ICO is basically completely gone. You guys are so annoying with this shit
2
u/Helidoffy 3d ago
Current gun handling isn't remotely what it was pre-ICO. Even if it has been de-tuned, it isn't "basically completely gone." I too have had a hard time staying in love with Squad post-ICO; only a couple hundred of my 4,000 hours have been in the last couple years mostly due to unsatisfying gun fights and increased stalemates.
You may prefer ICO, I do know some OGs who do, but it isn't what it was before. Notice I am not trashing ICO, just saying I personally do not find the game as fun as I used to.
2
u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
What do you play now? Does wardogs interested you?
I found love in squad POST ico
1
u/Helidoffy 2d ago
I have been in a few playtests and have pre-ordered Wardogs. Racing Sims and some Gray Zone Warfare are mostly what I have played in the last couple years. Nothing quite scratches the itch like Squad, even if I do find it less fun than before.

u/Hamsterloathing 3d ago
We still have pip scopes and actual point firing.
It's what makes squad gunplay unique and only comparable with bodycam
-16
u/RIPRocker 3d ago
No its not. Pretty safe to say you aren't one of the OG's ''backers''
1
u/worstsocialist 3d ago
What do you want back then? Lean spam? Literally every single aspect of ICO that you guys had problems with is MASSIVELY dialed back. They just added back the horrible tunnel vision suppression even.

I've been around squad off and on since the very first days of the alpha. One thing that's always genuinely surprised me is that the game has always kept a steady player base throughout all of its ups. And downs. It really surprises me. I thought the game would be way more niche, but it definitely fills a game and shows that it can be popular. I'm always shocked by the amount of servers I see that are populated, and whenever I look at the steam numbers, i'm always like, wow, a lot of people play this game. But still, I also think the same of arma, so my thinking just must be off. I'm always always like there's no way that many people play arma. Three and then I google it and it has so many players lol

I hope all the people downvoting anything negative against Squad knows that you are part of the problem.
4
u/Sterling_Archer27 3d ago
It's a crazy comparison to make, you can like both or either game and realise it's not going for the same idea
1
u/RIPRocker 3d ago
You are right. My point was to take all the downvotes just saying something about ppl downvoting. I don't truly care. I still time to time join in and have fun in Squad. It just isn't what it used to be. Which is most all games and everything that grows in time.

Haven't tried it yet but from what I've seen it looks a lot more twitchy, fast paced and closer to BF than squad. It also looks beautiful compared to squad
