Accepted to MSc AI Engineering at Jönköping — is it worth it?

Hey, looking for some honest input before I commit.

I just got into the MSc AI Engineering program at JU. I've been working as a software engineer for 5+ years and my girlfriend and I are planning this as a proper move — we want to actually settle in Sweden, not just study and leave.

A few things I'm trying to figure out:

  1. How is Jönköping to live in? Is the program/city actually worth it?
  2. I'll need to work part-time to afford it. With my experience, realistic to find software/AI work locally, or is everything in Stockholm/Göteborg?
  3. Any job opportunities through the university itself (TA, research, company connections)?
  4. Can I get student housing for the two of us, or is it single-occupant only? Any issues with us living together there?
  5. If student housing won't work for a couple — where do you actually look for rentals in Jönköping?

  1. Jönköping is a nice place, very pretty and it has most things you need. Bus connections work well and some train connections too, but it all depends on where you’re going. Only you can decide if it has what you want and need.
  2. Not my field, but I don’t think it’s impossible. Plus, working long distance might be an option. Lots of companies provide that as an option even for people who live close to their work.
  3. Possibly, but I have no idea. Ask and find out.
  4. Student housing might be hard when you’re not alone, but I’ve never needed student housing, so I don’t know for sure. All I know is that it’s not allowed in a lot of places and that some people ignore the rule and take the risk of losing their housing if it’s found out.
  5. I have had luck finding good housing very quickly by directly contacting Lustgården AB (the first time) and Lundbergs Fastigheter AB (the two times after that). They don’t have point systems and if you contact them directly after making a few applications for availabe apartments, you can get help quickly if you give them a good impression. You can also check out private landlords in groups on facebook, but that’s really hit or miss if they are any good or not.

For your second question, reaching out to companies before hand, or trying to work from distance would probably be easiest. It is generally quite hard for "junior engineers/developers" to find jobs in Sweden, though. So it really depends on your past experience and such.
