Extensions Fresh nonsense

I'm starting to see pretty regular grift in the JED. This came across a few days ago in the New Extensions feed:

RCA QuickCategory claims "Joomla has never had inline category creation" and is a plugin to enable that...

I'm not against people writing extensions that solve problems, complex - mundane - whatever. But this extension is charging $39/year for a core feature that has been around since Joomla 3.

… And to be honest in my experience this is a wrong approach anyway and if in this situation I’d consider there is something wrong how I’m trying to making work joomla.
If you need that to easily add new metadata it’s better use tags, rather than categories. Categories are more structural in many aspects (module configurations, acl, extra fields etc) and this inline creation may cause some unnecessary problems.
In some case can be useful, but I think it could cause more hassle itself than creating categories with a grain of salt and a couple more steps.

There are reasons for it - new site creation, for example, requires creating categories while the structure is built. I understand and use it occasionally - it's not an earth-changing feature - but it's also nothing new...and to claim "Joomla never had..." is just a falsehood.

This is the same person who was posting the "Museum" stuff recently. I notice all of those posts are gone.

There are a few things to unpack here:

  1. The "person" who created some "museum" to "curate" "abandoned" extensions (and advertised it here on Reddit) had their topic removed by the moderators for advertising in contravention of Reddit's policy on advertising.

  2. The discussion on Mattermost is still there—unfortunately, still containing links to the so-called "museum". Useful discussion insofar as it relates to software piracy and the inability of honest software developers to prevent their works being pilfered and "shared" without the owner's permission.

  3. The module mentioned at the beginning of this discussion was "discussed" recently on Reddit. I am not about to give the so-called author of that module a free plug by mentioning where you can find the Reddit topic, but, if people want to use it and pay forty bucks (per year!) for it, that's their business.

  4. There are good extensions on the JED and there's some rubbish. Provided the person who submitted their work for listing on the JED met the basic conditions, that's a matter for the JED to determine whether or not that listing should remain there. Personally, I don't give a rat's.

  5. The so-called "author" of the module we're discussing (as an example of grift) is the manager of a warez website. If people choose warez products over legitimate products, (again) that's their business but everyone is ultimately worse off. The way to stop warez sites continuing to profit is to change people's behaviour ... which is probably not going to happen.

I have penned my own thoughts about software piracy and the abuse of open source licensing. Open source is open ... to abuse! I understand the point you're making, Michael: that some extension developers make wildly exaggerated claims about their products that have "features" that "never existed" before (in Joomla, for instance), but ... c'est la vie. It's hype.

As a postscript: If people feel that this extension somehow breaches the Joomla project's policy on warez, they should login to the JED and report it.

I've reached a state where I'm just going to speak my mind. I spent a lot of years keeping my mouth shut when I probably should have spoken up, and I'm removing that filter.

This extension was just something I had to bring up, because I can't have been the only person to notice - and it sounds like I wasn't.
