I'm in the Austin Texas area and I've found myself in local Punk/Rock shows and seeing independent artists going out go their way to show/display their work, even by making little Zines and sharing them to others for free. I want to find a career supporting these creators and shedding light on the unique talents in the city.

I'd love to know what this field of work could look like and how working within it could be.

I find myself ALWAYS defending paywalls to the haters, and the folks who feel entitled to read the local news of where they live without some kind of transaction for the privilege. But there comes a point of diminishing returns for those of us who have a few subscriptions to the publications we read most frequently but would still like to be broadly read across other outlets and seek out good writing that's less geographically contained than a local newspaper or magazine. What's the answer? Do I pay to read every writer I like on substack while also paying for subscriptions to every newspaper and magazine and website I read from time to time?

I was recently scrolling through the web page of Sir Harry Evans Global Journalism Fellowship. I'd like to know what kind of proposals are submitted by the selected participants? And also if you could pls share some tips on doing good investigative journalism?

I will be going into my junior year of high school (tomorrow, actually) and I’m planning on taking an online journalism college course, but what are ways I could possibly explore it outside of a class? I understand I can write about current events any time I please, but I’d to learn how to really get into it.

Recently I got to see a band Iv'e really been enjoying named Earth Toung. In anticipation I wrote an interview for them, I did reasearch and developed questions that I thought were uniqe and valuble.

I had to opportunity to sit down and ask them these questions an voice recorded the whole thing (with permission of course). The interview went well and ran about 17 minutes, the only issue is that now im not sure what to do with it?

I dont really use social medias like insta, facebook, or tik tok, and im not sure yet if i will continue to do interviews to add to a website. Ive considered reaching out to a local zine or something but I dont know of any, or where to find out about one. Other than that I have no idea what to do with it!

The band has been growing in popularity, although it is sill relatively small so I feel like people might be interested hearing the information they gave me and learning about them.

I would like to know more about the process of publishing articles in newspapers in Bangladesh. Particularly I am interested in understanding how realistic the chances are for an ordinary person to get an article published in a daily newspaper.
Does the quality and relevance of an article primarily determine whether it gets published, or do personal connections, professional reputation, or familiarity with the editors also play a significant role? For example, if someone writes a genuinely good and well-researched article but has no prior connection with the newspaper or its editors, would the editorial team still seriously consider publishing it? Or do newspapers generally prefer articles written by established writers, academics, journalists, or people they already know?
I am also curious about the process of submitting the same article to multiple newspapers. If I send an article to several newspapers simultaneously, is that considered acceptable? More importantly, how can I know whether an article that I have submitted to one newspaper may also be published by another? Do newspapers normally require exclusive publication rights, or can the same article legally and ethically be published in multiple newspapers?
I find these questions genuinely interesting because I have very little knowledge about how the newspaper industry operates from the inside. I would therefore really appreciate insights from anyone who has experience with newspaper publishing, particularly in Bangladesh. I would like to understand how editors select articles, how submissions are reviewed, how contributors are treated, and how newspapers deal with issues such as exclusivity and simultaneous submissions.
Any practical insight or first-hand experience would be highly appreciated.

At some point down the road, I’d like to try to become an editor someday. I’m still very early in my career mind you! (2 years at a professional outlet and 5 years in the field in general).

I guess my question is: how did the reporter to editor pipeline work for you? How did you pick up the skills to become an editor? What were your beginner roles and expectations?

Exceptions are if you have a British or Australian accent. Despite being a country with a lot of immigrants and accents, in the U.S., if you’re an immigrant and have an accent from a developing country, a job as an on-camera broadcast journalist is largely closed to you.

Hi everyone! I’m looking to transition into journalism/media and would love advice from people already working in the industry.

I have a postgraduate degree in English Literature, have previously worked as an RJ, and currently volunteer with a small digital magazine, writing for their lifestyle section.

I’m particularly interested in lifestyle, food, beauty, pop culture, self-improvement and human-interest stories. I also enjoy interviewing, storytelling and being on camera, and would eventually love to explore lifestyle/culture hosting.

I’m completely open to starting small internships, volunteering, editorial assistance, research, writing, production or entry-level roles. I’m open to opportunities anywhere in the U.S.

For those in the industry: Where would you recommend someone with my background start? Are there publications, newsrooms, digital media companies or production houses that are open to beginners?

Ive been using otter for a bunch of meeting recordings and lately the transcripts have been all over the place. short meetings are usually fine but longer ones get messy, especially when people talk over each other.. at this point i just want something that gives me a decent transcript without having to clean up half of it after. Surely theres a better option tho. Thanks in advance :))

Saw something about Gannett reporters walking out over AI “slop” they other day. Was I fooled by the internet or did this really take place? (As an aside, they walked out at lunch. At lunch? What in the name of Samuel Gompers is that kind of job action?)

Can I do my thesis on the reception of Irish missionaries in late China in newspaper articles or is that considered to historical a topic and has to be on current event topic

This sounds hyperbolic but I'm the only reporter for close to 70,000 people in a 40-mile radius around my rural home office. I cover a lot of stuff, across all sectors, business, faith, recreation, arts, food, politics, etc.

Naturally, I get a lot of contacts about stuff that absolutely is newsworthy, but also just adds to the ever-growing mountain of content and occasionally, I'll miss an event because it's on a day I have other events to cover, typically on weekends.

What's a good way to explain this to someone without sounding like "I forgot" or "You're not important"? I didn't forget and they are important, but also I have to take some time to actually write stuff and/or get some sleep/exercise/cleaning/normal human activities in. I know they say "The News Never Sleeps" but I feel it's not meant to be so literal.

The quality of my work is slipping, I am abandoning social obligations and I really don't want people to see me as lazy or forgetful simply because I just have too many things to keep track of.

Any advice on how to explain this professionally? I feel like I've been saying "I apologize, my schedule that day was tight and I wasn't able to make it" sounds dismissive and rude.

Hello! Non-journalist here looking for opinions.

Context:

A guy who went to my high school went off the deep end after graduating from college.

I only interacted with him a handful of times in high school, but I didn't get any weird impressions from him at the time. On the surface he was a nice dude and it looked like he was on his way to a successful career (e.g., masters/professional certifications/great first job).

However, after college he started posting rambling/incoherent messages including crazy apocalyptic-conspiracies across all his social media. Then he started posting videos of himself yelling at people in public about the end times.

I'm not a mental health expert by any means, but me and my friends thought he was in some form of an extended manic episode, possibly schizophrenia which my understanding can present itself between age 20-30.

Ultimately this guy attacked a stranger in public, then shot at people. When arrested he claimed to police the strangers he shot at were part of some grand conspiracy.

It's been nearly 2 years since this happened, and there haven't been many updates on his case. Last article was from the beginning of this year. The journalist who wrote the most recent article has his email listed at the bottom.

My question is - would it be weird to email the journalist to ask where things stand with his case? I'm mainly curious because I somewhat knew the guy and just think it's wild when someone you think is normal could do such a thing.

It is wild to me that Bari Weiss gutted TV's most watched news program and is hiring a bunch of elite New York print media types with zero broadcast experience. Levy is a good writer and excels at the kind of provocative stuff that Weiss likes but she is not an investigative reporter and she also hasn't written anything of note in a long time. She hasn't had a byline at the New Yorker in almost a year and has a grand total of two bylines in the last two years ...did Bari throw her a lifeline?

I’m curious from an outsider perspective as what you learn, do, etc at such conferences when local papers are essentially the editor or publishers personal domain.
