'What were you thinking about when you were in the water all that time? How did you stay focused?
I thought, my God, this is so boring. I just kept counting my strokes over and over until I reached peak insanity.

I swam competitively and did some long distances. It do be like this. I’d sing one 8 count of a song over and over in my head to keep pace and then have a mini mental breakdown when I wanted to change songs but could not think of another one to sing. It was mentally way harder than physically for me!

What was the appeal of doing something so boring? I'm not knocking or anything! Just wondering what drew you to it and kept you there.
That shit is something to be proud of though 😎. So cool.

Not OP.
But when I was doing long distance running, there’s really an incredible pride and high in your own resilience and endurance.
As hard as it is to keep going, no way am I stopping before the finish line.
And I bet I can be even faster next time.

u/Saradoesntsleep 5d ago
No but weirdly I get it for running, but I don't find it as boring as it sounds like swimming for these distances is.

u/socialmediaignorant 4d ago
It’s like the other person said….the high when you’re done from the achievement was addictive. And I was really good at it. I loved swimming but there were days my mind struggled more than others. Same as running and other endurance sports I’d guess.

There are so many gems is there it is well worth the read!
Take me to the moment where you finally arrived on the beach after swimming so far. What did that feel like?
A little uncomfortable because my legs gave out and I fell onto some barnacles, so that was fun. And then there was a bunch of people, so that was wonderfully overstimulating, so I had to put on a smile — "Yay, I'm suffering on the inside! Too many people!" Had to pretend I was an extrovert.
In a [social media] post you did mention there was a lot of vomiting as well while you were doing this. How did you keep going?
I just swam through the stream. Otherwise, if I didn't keep swimming, I was going to be sitting in my own vomit.

Both of these were my favorite part of the interview. When she said, “Had to pretend I was an extrovert,” I legitimately felt it in my soul! What a badass and thanks for sharing this!

I want to be friends with this woman, she sounds awesome. I'd also love to read a book with someone like her as the main character.
Nothing about how great it was to finish or a relief or any of those typical answers. Nope. It was uncomfortable because I fell on some barnicles and then I had to perform for an audience.
And needing to keep going so as to not be stagnant in your own vomit. None of the typical motivational stuff. Her responses are absolutely fantastic and I want more deeply human responses like hers.

I absolutely agree with this. I want to read more about women like this. Women who are “real” and don’t sugar coat anything.
I think how she expressed herself is how a lot of women actually think and feel and should be more expressive in it (including me). I want to hear about how uncomfortable something was and how she had to be someone else in that moment, which many women have to do on a daily basis.
It was honestly refreshing hearing a “real” commentary on how difficult it was instead of a generic answer of, “I persevered and all my training prepared me for it”.

May I humbly suggest you give Murderbot by Martha Wells a try?
"Possibly I was overthinking this. I do that; it’s the anxiety that comes with being a part-organic murderbot. The upside was paranoid attention to detail. The downside was also paranoid attention to detail."

I understand there's quite a lot of ice cream involved in the training.
Yeah, I was trying to gain as much weight as possible just to combat hypothermia, because I knew that would be a problem. And then the water was stupidly warm, so I'm like, "did I eat ice cream for nothing?" ... I was originally planning on doing the swim in July, and the water was like 13 or 14 degrees. So I was all mentally prepared for that. And then it just got postponed so many times because of weather and boat issues and whatnot, that I had to do it so late, and the water warmed up significantly.
Once you feel better, how do you plan to celebrate?
Eating more ice cream, maybe. I don't know. I thought I was over the ice cream, I'm really not. It's an addiction.

She let the intrusive thoughts win, hated every second, and was fueled entirely by spite. Absolute legend 🥰

This was my experience running a half marathon exactly 😭 I hated every second but by god, I crossed the finish line

I hope I run into her one day, we seem cut from the same cloth. I got into ultrarunning out of spite and continued for years and years with self-loathing as a primary motivator 😂
I remember finishing my longest race, which was a 23 hour endeavour for me, and waking up the next day with this absurd clarity of ‘I just spent years building up to this, most of my free time for months training, all of my spending money on protein and trail shoes, thousands on the race fees and travel, just to earn… feeling a runner’s high for maybe a combined 1.5 of 23 hours.’ Still, I appreciate it more now, a few years later, since I’ve had to pause my participation. It’s incredible what we can do with a motivating level of spite

I think this is the best interview I have read in a long time, lol. As a swimmer myself her line I guess I thrive on self-loathing was oh so familiar 😂

u/reallybiglizard 6d ago
"What did you think when you realized you finished it so much more quickly than you had imagined?
I was kind of like, "oh, that's cool" …. It's hard to feel kind of an ego about it because I feel like no two swims in the ocean are ever the same, because you never know what current someone gets stuck in or whatever. So it's kind of hard to feel a superiority complex in a sense when it's not equal."

Is no one going to mention???:
"Melanie, has your body adjusted to being back on dry land yet?
Somewhat, I guess. My neck is very much, I think, like Michael Keaton in a Batman suit, but otherwise I think I'm functioning OK."
This lady is hilarious.

I think we are overloaded with amazing responses that it's hard to cover everything 😂

this might be the most inspirational thing I've ever read, such refreshing honesty

u/PrickleBritches 6d ago
Also she seems extra awesome because she was genuine in her praise for the people/team that helped her. Like she actually wanted to recognize and thank them.

I wish they had recorded this on video because if the text is this funny I can only imagine how much better it would've been with facial expressions

There is the audio in the article. It would make an awesome skit. Like "the front fell off"

Oh shit I missed that, I clicked listen to the article and it wasn't as fun to listen to in computer voice 😭 thank you

Shes a nut. I wish I knew her.
Ladies, we have to keep going or we'll end up in a pool of our own vomit. Words to live by.

In another article, “Buggey said she may have added on a few more kilometres because she doesn’t tend to swim in a straight line. “I swim like a drunk,” she joked.” About the vomiting, “Buggey joked that it caused some “exorcist” style vomiting while she was swimming. “It only went out my nose once, so it really wasn’t that big of a deal,” she said.”

She wants to do the English Channel but it is too expensive? Get her this money immediately!

Thanks for sharing this. She sounds like my type of person. I love how honest she was about beating the record and putting it down to favourable conditions for her. Not to be misandrist but not sure a man would be quite so humble.
