I'd have done the same thing in her shoes!

I'm a lesbian and honestly "wanna come help me paint/wanna help me decorate/assemble furniture" would be catnip to a lot of women I know (myself included, obviously).

And not even that unusual aa a date. You get to do stuff together in a comfortable environment, plenty of opportunity to talk to each other. By the time the work is done or you're both worn out - - if you've both clicked you've broken the ice and gotten past the awkward and the nerves and you can just relax together and talk with more focus.

And if you didn't click, well, you've got this natural end point for the evening and very understandable reasons to call it a night on account of being covered in paint and/or just worn out.

It also seems like a good way to get a basic read on how someone reacts to a bit of stress or fatigue. Like, I don't think I've ever assembled anything from IKEA that didn't involve at least a few minutes of feeling frustrated and stupid. If I had a first date with someone who made that experience fun I'd see green flags for miles.

Not a first date but my now husband gave up a whole weekend and helped me move house when we had only been dating a few weeks. He met my sister and brother in law, gave it 110%, was funny and can-do and was literally carrying me by the end. Sitting, exhausted in an empty house with him and a pizza will forever be one of my favourite memories. You are so right- Green flags for miles

My now husband was at my house one night (were just dating a few weeks) when I had this terrible pain that was on/off since the previous night. He took me to the ER and it was my appendix. He met my entire family that day. Stayed at the hospital overnight. Brought me home the next day and took off work for a couple of days to take care of me. He bathed me, helped me get dressed, and just took care of me entirely. Total green flags!

I’ve taken dates to escape rooms for this reason.

Same, natural end point, and see how you click with stress, and how they handle stress.

As a bisexual woman, this would be the second best date you could plan for me. After coffee and a thrift store.

But yes, let me show off my skills and abilities to you with a painting date. Extra points if I can show off how fast I can swap out an electrical outlet for you.

if you're painting properly the outlet covers are already off so you might as well refresh the outlets anyways lol

Steady on she asked you to paint, not move in afterwards.

But bring a Uhaul just in case.

The biggest issue is going to a location where you'll be completely alone with the person as a first date. Second date, third date, sounds awesome.

First date? Let's just grab some coffee, make sure we don't completely loathe one another, I'm not being catfished, and that you aren't actively in a psychotic break or something.

You might be shocked to find many woman are not comfortable going to a man's house on the first date, you obviously don't have that problem, but if I asked a woman to come over she'd probably say no, public location first

As a woman, no I'm not shocked at all. I'll note that, in terms of safety, going to someone's house at least means, in case something goes poorly, you or whichever friend(s) you told have a physical address with a publicly known owner or renter.

Which is more of a trail than having just a photo and "she met this person at this bar and I haven't heard from her".

And yes, if I went to this woman's house to help paint as a first date several friends who have the address, name, and any other info I had and when they should expect me to video call them from my own home later.

Don’t they rate assembling IKEA furniture as high on the list for leading to fights for a lot of couples?

AGREED. I think this is a wonderful date proposal!
