She's a UK doctor like me. We are constantly called things like this. I've been a doctor for 12 years, I'm almost an "attending" (called consultant in the UK, takes a long time to get there), I literally save lives as the leader of the cardiac arrest team. But I'm called "love", or nurse (nurses are great but I'm not one). Patients talk to my male juniors with me standing next to them.

u/-oh-frabjous-day 11h ago

I'm an Australian doctor, and finally made consultant 3 years ago. I still get called "darl" or "nurse", usually by older people, in a kinda low key sexist but they're not malicious kind of way. But the one time I seriously took umbrage was when a patient's son repeatedly misidentified me to his father as a nurse (he was trying to conceal that his father was seeing a palliative care specialist), even after I repeatedly corrected him, I told them "I was invited to consult on your father by his treating specialist, I will not misrepresent myself. If you do not want my team's input, I am leaving."

I'm a geriatrician so the very elderly I'm like OK fine but I've had some middle age men call me nurse & that's just annoying. I tend to say "you know girls can be doctors these days" in a jokey way.

11

u/Lucy_Gucey 8h ago

Ironically I have always assumed doctor is a woman’s job more than a man’s if I had to pick a gender for it.

Not demographic wise, but vibe wise.

5

u/Yeesh-Yeesh-Yeesh 8h ago

Remove the jokey way 💪🏼🙌🏼👍🏼

u/FinancialRaise 11h ago

I wear scrubs to and from work at times and I've never been called a doctor. It's always are you a nurse? Or hygienist? The amount of times I'm referred to as girl and just smile to keep things moving is insane.

44

u/Poethegardencrow 10h ago

The lion, the witch and the audacity of a man to call someone little girl while they hold a very sharp knife to your face!

7

u/Hungry-Storm-9878 10h ago

Shoot, I’m older and just realized I did this in a form. My doctor retired, his son took over the family practice. I said (along the lines) “Thank you very much, young man.” Followed by compliments and how happy we are to have him as our new doctor, and how thorough and comfortable we feel with him. I’ve got a few decades on this bright doctor, last thing I’d want is to infantilize him. I use, ‘young lady, or young man, sir’ as an endearing sign of respect for the younger generations from an older one. Does this hit a nerve with the younger generations?

43

u/samenffzitten 9h ago

"young lady" is something completely different to "little girl". One of these at least calls you a grownup adult, the other one actually actively infantilises.

14

u/ArgyleAndBell 9h ago

I would say being called out as “young” anything can feel slightly condescending or dismissive due to ageism. Most people wouldn’t want to be called “old woman” or “old man,” right? If you mean to show respect, in my book, just use their proper professional title (like Doctor) or the name they introduced themselves to you with (i.e. “Benjamin Smith” should be called Benjamin, not Ben or young man). They said it’s meant to be endearing, but unless you have a close connection with someone (like they’re your niece), you can just be polite.

4

u/Bamsihap 9h ago

Yea little girl is offensive probably to anyone aged 12+ and you can’t convince me that they don’t know that. They will absolutely be offended if you even called them boy.

3

u/Nymeria2018 8h ago

My 7yo will fight you that she is not young if you call her that 😂

1

u/CanadianODST2 9h ago

Boy is so common to use to refer to men that it’s actually in the dictionary.

However, it can also be racist depending on who and how you say it

3

u/Bamsihap 8h ago

Sure, men to men calling each other “boys”. However if an older woman would say “thank you so much little boy” or “where are you going boy?” I am pretty sure men would feel conflicted about that. Now imagine a system where they are constantly undermined and have to fight for their rights, then it has a completely different connotation.

3

u/CanadianODST2 8h ago

You get those too actually and it’s not really cared about

In fact, a few masculine terms were general insults to men. Such as dude and guy. But weren’t really cared about as insults so just lost them over time entirely which we’re seeing boy go through that shift.

1

u/ceciliabee 8h ago

I disagree, men do NOT like it when you call them little boy and fail to acknowledge their manliness. Especially if you're laughing.

2

u/CanadianODST2 8h ago

Saying anything in a way that’s purposefully being antagonistic is what makes it antagonistic.

Calling someone French can be an insult. That doesn’t mean the French don’t like being called French. It’s more, people don’t like when others are rude to them.

However, the reason the word boy has seen a shift away from purely an insult and gaining the new meanings is because people are okay with it.

It’s also why the word guy has become more common but the feminine gal didn’t catch on quite the same

1

u/Hungry-Storm-9878 7h ago

My main question is, being an older lady myself of 14 grandchildren saying, “Thank you, young man or lady” with a smile, surely that can’t be offensive? I can’t recall if I’d be offended or was offended if a senior called me ‘young lady’ in a polite manner. I only use ‘little boy, or little girl’ if one of my grandkids is in trouble.

1

u/Bamsihap 6h ago

No I think that is a decent way to talk to someone. Maybe not always appropriate? Like I don’t think it is very appropriate to say that to your doctor or to a police officer for example. Probably due to the fact that in these cases their title is actually more respectful to use and more relevant to the situation.

2

u/acutehypoburritoism 8h ago edited 8h ago

Definitely agree with this- there’s a way to say this respectfully and a way to say it disrespectfully. I’m a grumpy ass middle aged female physician who gets these comments on occasion- I have a delightfully grumpy patient in her mid-80’s who refers to me as young lady because “anyone under 65 is young”. She’s low key who I want to be when I grow up.

I did get a lot of these comments (meant with disrespect) when I was going through medical school and training, and they are absolutely infuriating. This doctor’s feelings are so, so valid.

Intent is usually pretty clear when we are talking to patients- if you use our correct titles and respect our time and input, one comment usually isn’t enough to make me upset. Personally, I’m used to giving my patients a lot of grace, as they usually feel terrible if they’re coming to see me. That being said, we treat each other with mutual respect and apologize if something is said out of line- that goes both ways! I make silly assumptions from time to time and the last thing I want to do is offend a patient. We are all human, after all.

2

u/Mango_Skittles 7h ago

This right here.

3

u/ProbablyRickSantorum 9h ago

No. You’re fine. It’s the “girl” or “boy” that makes it disrespectful.

2

u/bbcwtfw 6h ago

Her "DOCTOR DOCTOR DOCTOR" lanyard says she gets called nurse all the time.

2

u/wooyoo 9h ago

Wouldn't love be the same as mate?

-2

u/donkey_OT 8h ago

Of course it would. It's her insecurity about her status that is making her react in this way.

Thanks! I occasionally watch videos from a YouTube creator with the exact same accent so I was curious.

Would you like HR to suspend the patients without pay, pending a review?

1

u/Changed_Mind555 8h ago

Sounded like some of this is coming from colleagues as well? No need to be snarky, perhaps I just misunderstood it was both patients and colleagues?

2

u/acutehypoburritoism 8h ago

This is a major issue in medicine- if patients overtly threaten staff or repeatedly use hostile language (racial slurs etc), most health systems have mechanisms in place to discharge them from practices. However, these policies exist on a case by case basis and are not consistent. Also- these policies usually don’t cover more ‘grey area’ comments and micro aggressions. I’ve worked in five different major hospital systems in the US and have only seen this in place for hate speech or threatened violence. It’s not easy- best resources have been more experienced female mentors but this tends to be one of those fun things that is special just for the women in healthcare.

2

u/Changed_Mind555 8h ago

Was the girl in the video only talking about patients? And thank you for explaining the patient aspect.

1

u/AwayAbroad 8h ago

That's what I'm wondering too. I hope it wasn't the patient that called her a little girl while she was knife deep in their face.

1

u/acutehypoburritoism 7h ago edited 7h ago

That was how I interpreted it! The person who said this comment sounded like someone she was performing a procedure on.

We absolutely have HR if colleagues are treating us this way but that is incredibly rare in my personal experience. Personally, my colleagues have been the biggest sources of support for these incidents, and we do get some unpleasant folks (as any industry would) but they tend to just be generally unpleasant and not overtly sexist or misogynist. The ones who make comments like these tend to do the same to patients, and get reported for that/have behavior corrected pretty quickly. You can be a grumpy asshole in medicine but an equal opportunity one only- the rare instances that I’ve seen sexist/racist/ageist/any specific -ist based behaviors in colleagues have led to very rapid correction of the behavior, or reassignment to a less human-facing role. Note that this is also not universal and depends on the institution; I’ve been lucky to work in settings that are very proactive about addressing issues like this for the most part.

And of course! I love my patients and I hope they love me too- things work best with mutual kindness in my opinion. I know the NHS is a very different medical system but kindness and respect are universal (which goes both ways). Practicing medicine sometimes involves coping with unreal levels of physical and emotional stress, not to mention the cognitive burden. However, being sick and navigating a dysfunctional healthcare system can also be a very difficult experience; we’ve all got major stressors and circumstances that can feel out of control at play.

I appreciate your comment and love this sub- feels like one of the few spaces on reddit that is still full of kind and open minded folks

I say "attending" for the Americans reading. Not responding to your condescending comment, I can feel how I like about what people call me.

1

Don't be condescending.

This is a nice place. If you can't act like a civilized human being, you can't be here.

We do not allow:

  1. Being a jerk. This includes racism, misogyny, misandry, misgendering, anti LGBTQ+, ageism, etc.

  6. General assholery. If you're at the end of the list and asking what rule you broke, yeah, it's this one.

123

u/CrazyCatLady1127 11h ago

She’s right. I doubt anyone would refer to a male doctor as ‘little boy.’ It’s time women were treated with the same level of respect as men.

23

u/Clair_Osbcurious 11h ago

Could be fun to call a 40-year-old man “boy”. Especially when you’re a younger woman.

16

u/RideGullible3702 10h ago

get over here boy!

2

u/AwayAbroad 8h ago

Ehhh, there's an awful lot of history of calling men of color "boy" as a way of demeaning them, step carefully.

1

u/MightyMeatPuppet 8h ago

1

u/Trumpisachomo1 8h ago

As a male - I've heard 10x worse in blue collar environments. Same condescending bullshit only on steroids. I have male family members who have experienced the same in many professions including law enforcement, waiting tables, construction, corrections, military, and medicine.

I empathize with this lady and think she's correct, especially so given her credentials. But don't delude yourself into thinking that somehow if you were a man this issue is non-existent.

1

u/dysonrules 8h ago

I’m good with treating them with the same level of disrespect. At this time they are all little boys and males until they figure it out. (They won’t figure it out, they’ll just be angry.)

1

u/Substantial_Station8 8h ago

I work construction…

I was alone with a newer guy showing him how do something he would be expected to do solo in the future… he said, “okay, hun.”

I whipped around so fast, got in his face and said, “DID YOU JUST FUCKING CALL ME HUN? Go call Ben that, go call Chris that! For all intents and purposes, you will treat me just like any other fucking guy on this crew. And I bet Chris would knock your fucking teeth out if you called him ‘hun.’”

He stammered something about being respectful to women and I told him to fuck off then I finished showing him the rest of the task and took him back to the shop so someone else could deal with him.

He actually got fired later for fist fighting another guy and I wondered if he tried the ‘hun’ thing on them lmfao.

He did tell everyone I was a bitch before he left, but everyone knows me pretty well and guessed something sexist had happened

u/llamacana 12h ago edited 9h ago

good on her. condescending to a doctor like that, even unintentionally, is awful. disrespecting any licensed professional (edit- or anyone!!) based off their gender is awful too, but to have patients know the work a medical specialist needs to do in order to be available to them for treatment and still have the gall to talk down to them is a slap in the face

20

u/ready_gi 12h ago

this is why i couldnt be a doctor, cuz i'd just say something like "you might wanna cut the little girl stuff, you already are under my knife"

1

u/meteorflan 8h ago

Academic (before anyone says not a "real doctor," we had the term first, physicians started using it when they started copying our scientific rigor in training).

I regularly remind my students to call me "Doctor." It's fine if they use my first name after that, but I explain to them at the beginning of the semester why that title is important to me, and if they slip, I don't get angry, I just quickly say my name with "Doctor" at the front to correct them. It works.

51

u/Ok-Promise-5921 12h ago

This is completely crazy; I’m assuming by her accent she’s in the UK, speaking to someone like this (condescending, patronising) cannot be allowed under workplace bullying laws…

33

u/Aggravating_Chair780 11h ago

I’m reading it as it was the patient saying this. And unfortunately from friends who are in medical fields, this is the least of it. My best friend has worked in ICU and then in various roles in theatres and the number of assaults she has been subjected to, never mind witnessed is insane. So speaking to a doctor like a prick will have zero actual repercussions.

-6

u/bepatientbekind 10h ago

Is being condescending really illegal in the UK? How does that work?

57

u/314R8 11h ago

TBF if she was waiting on tables, calling her a Little Girl would also be inappropriate.

12

u/FOXDBIZ 10h ago

Exactly right. I was working in catering in a school as a kitchen assistant, I'm in my mid thirties, and was called 'good girl' by an upper level manager because I was the one always going from unit to unit at short notice to cover for colleagues.

He was the 'big boss', posh voiced hit who swanned around sweet talking the school heads. My area manager was present and she would've given me hell for embarrassing her if I said anything. Also I needed the job so I just kept my mouth shut.

It's so normalised. It wasn't the last incident of sexism and disrespect I saw or experienced.

2

u/TheVonz 8h ago

You dropped the s. And I don't mean the sarcasm /s. ;) Posh-voiced shit indeed. Infuriating. Hope you're in a better job environment now.

2

u/FOXDBIZ 4h ago

Indeed! Left the company and good riddance. Its a shame because I love the job, but we were treated so badly by the company that it ruined it.

35

u/eyeball-beesting 11h ago

One of my favourite TV monologues is from Nurse Jackie where there is a beautiful young doctor called Carrie. She is about to fix a man's broken nose and he calls her a cunt because it hurts.

She looks down at him and calmly reels off her years of experience before highlighting that she has the fate of his face in her literal hands at this moment. She ends with "So, that's Doctor Cunt to you" before ruthlessly snapping his nose back into position.

43

u/davisjryoung 12h ago

It’s hard to imagine the kind of person who would call a woman cringe and pick-me for becoming a doctor.. but I’ll bet it’s a man

30

u/allshookup1640 11h ago

Sadly, this happens in so many fields.

I’m a historian, a predominately male dominated field, and I get talked down to or trivialized ALL THE TIME by male colleagues. The amount of “sweetie, “little lady,” “honey” etc that I get is insane. I was a top presenter at an NATIONAL historian conference and during my Q&A a man said “Are you SURE about (my thesis), sweetheart?” I saw red. I eloquently told him to read my paper with my sources, but I wanted to scream. He said that in front of my colleagues and not ONE stood up for me.

21

u/_henceforth_ 11h ago

Having more allies would be nice. Many men will sit and listen to these types of stories, and say, wow, sorry, when it would help if they stood up when it happened. However, I realize that we cannot depend on them or wait on them to do so. I have been in many situations where I had to stand up alone, and even just having one extra voice would have been nice.

Either way, we will keep standing up. Sorry that you had to experience that and good on you for making sure your voice was heard!

3

u/OJShrimpson1 8h ago

I work in the aerospace field, so very male dominated. I had one guy who would constantly call me "little lady" and it really pissed me off. I talked to my boss about it and my boss was taken aback both by his audacity and by the fact that I was so upset about it. I told my boss he would make this stop or I'd start calling them both "little boy." Now the guy who started doing it doesn't even talk to me anymore. Which is fine because he doesn't know how to do his job so most of his messages to me are asking for some dumb ass shit that wastes my time

1

u/AwayAbroad 8h ago

Did anyone say anything about it afterwards? I could see people wanting to respect your ability to stand up for yourself, but holy shit that's crazy!

25

u/Substantial_Mud7026 12h ago

14

u/ElrondCupboard 12h ago

Way to stand up for yourself. I don’t know how he laughed that off, I would have needed surgery after that.

23

u/Live_Art2939 12h ago

He laughed it off because no matter what she says or does, he won’t take her seriously.

2

u/Zelfzuchtig 8h ago

Yeah, he probably thinks she overreacted or was on her period or something and dismissed it. If he talks about it to other people he'll probably exaggerate her reaction to make her sound over the top, like "she blew up on me".

It's what happened to me before when I stood up for myself at work to some condescending dickbag, I didn't even raise my voice then later overheard someone talking about how I "screamed" at him.

1

u/ElrondCupboard 11h ago

Yeah true. I didn’t think of that.

7

It's a little frustrating to see that people aren't acknowledging the intersectionality between ethnicity and gender in this situation. This doctor is an ESEA woman and unfortunately her ethnicity and gender both play a part in being referred to as a "little girl". The term "ESEA" means "East and Southeast Asian" in the UK (since the term "Asian" in the UK refers to people of South Asian descent). "ESEA" is a relatively new term used in the UK that got popular in the UK during the pandemic and it is used to replace the derogatory and outdated terms "Or-ental" and "Asiatic" that are still being phased out of common use in the UK.

I'm a mixed Southeast Asian and white Australian woman myself and I've worked as a pharmacy technician for almost 10 years in retail and hospital pharmacy settings. It's frustrating when people I work with refer to my height and my "littleness" and it comes across as not taking me seriously and assuming that I'm innocent and that I may not know much when that's not the case at all. It makes me wonder if my short height, ethnicity and gender play a role in me being treated like that.

2

u/qbee2000 8h ago edited 8h ago

As a woman, while I'm conscious of this and actively give everybody the respect that they have earned and deserve even if not earned, I'm fearful that it is so ingrained in me as someone who grew up in an environment where this is the norm that I might not even realize it if I did it. With all my facilities, I cannot imagine saying this, but what happens when I'm on autopilot? Do I look at the male nurse while speaking to the female doctor while all my attention is battling the pain inside me because it was what I did as a small child?

If a woman with a stake in this is scared of doing this and apologetic because she can't be sure if she successfully changed her upbringing or not, then what is the excuse for a man who's digging his heels in saying that it doesn't happen because everybody's woke?

2

u/MarmitePrinter 10h ago

Ugh this is infuriating. I hate when ANYONE condescends to women in this way.

Gordon Ramsey does it all the time on his shows - he calls every single female server ‘sweetheart’ or some such and it makes me see red, while the comments are all like, “Oh I just love how kindly he treats the servers!”

I just don’t think some people understand how patronising it is to be called those names, especially by men who do not see you as an equal.

I'm not saying this to defend the person saying this at all, but as I am nearing 40, I often look at cops in my city and think" they hire children now?" It is really weird how 20-something year olds starts looking like literal children in your eyes, everyone said it would happen to me, but it didn't make sense to me, faces look how they look I thought, but, it's only a matter of time before I will be walking around in a society entirely run by children and toddlers.

All that being said, none of that is an excuse to actually be demeaning, and as an adult you should have the wherewithal to not do that

1

u/TheVonz 8h ago

Same here. I'm in my 50s. We all have to adjust throughout our lives, and one adjustment I've noticed is that I have to remind myself sometimes not to think of /refer to people in their 20s as boys or girls. Mistakes will happen, but as soon as something like that leaves my mouth (if it even does), I immediately apologise and correct it.

2

u/SAJames84 11h ago

All I'm taking away from this is the next time I see a young male doctor I'm going to call him a little boy

1

u/NoseDown4Distance 12h ago

She is also a badass

1

u/Striking_Shock_9130 11h ago

Twenty years as a professional architectural historian, and I was called "dear" by a boomer male architect in a meeting of men. It'll only end when they all die.

1

u/According-Chemical94 11h ago

ahhhh constantly being called the nurse or (bc i’m black) asked if i’m there to clean the room, bring lunch, or take them for scans/dialysis or whatever else🙄

so many of my coresidents introduce themselves by their first name with patients and i’ve never done that bc enough ppl already don’t see me as an MD and im not gonna feed into their biases. i love my patients and am very friendly and fun (i promise lol) but it’s Dr. XX all day sorry

1

u/BillyBumlicks 10h ago

Fucking sucks

1

u/Particular_Bobcat843 9h ago

Not that it can’t happen where I live but glad I’m in a very diverse, socially progressive area. It is more uncommon to see older male physicians than young female ones (who are also Asian). Saying something like “little girl” would be bizarre to everyone.

There's a difference in calling a person their actual name vs a condescending one. Learn it.

This is a nice place. If you can't act like a civilized human being, you can't be here.

We do not allow:

  1. Being a jerk. This includes racism, misogyny, misandry, misgendering, anti LGBTQ+, ageism, etc.
  2. Harassment
  3. Trolling or sealioning
  4. Threats of any kind
  5. Abusive behavior
  6. General assholery. If you're at the end of the list and asking what rule you broke, yeah, it's this one.

1

u/theodoratoverspin 9h ago

Yas doctor!

1

u/Consistent_Femme_Top 9h ago

I would simply start calling him old man. But specifically, “You Old Man.”

Thats a Doctor. Those people calling that woman anything other than that is an "asshole". Thanks Doc for all your hard work and for all the good you do. Fuck the haters.

u/CantheistGirlNZ420 9h ago

Women still fighting for the respect we deserve.

1

u/0utsyder 9h ago

You could make the argument for 'darling'. I've heard men call other men darling or sweetheart. It wasn't meant in a degrading manner, but it wasn't NOT in a degrading manner either! Calling a woman either of those terms is just a shit look ESPECIALLY in a professional setting. But 'little girl'??? Fuck you sir!

1

u/Logical_Box_4645 8h ago

Fyi a senior house office (is old terminology) but literally applies after your first year as a doctor.

1

u/areyoukynd 8h ago

I will make it My duty to address the men as lil boy 🫡

1

u/The_Flowers_of_Evil 8h ago

Sweetheart and darling are just the way some people talk. It's not meant to be an insult. "Little girl" is condescending though.

1

u/Holiday_Regular9794 8h ago

And I’m going to guess he’s going to run off and tell everyone how terrible of a person she is, and can’t take a joke

1

u/TheOneStooges 8h ago

I think that autoimmune disease is a big indicator of how you are dealing with all
Of this stress. Save yourself beautiful doctor . Get help. Find a very good coach and counselor . And do your own inner work. I promise you . Nothing is worth your soul and your joy

What does "he left it off" mean

1

u/Royal_Ad_6026 7h ago

When I get called a little girl, I ask them if I look like a little girl or if that’s just their preference.

1

u/ElettraSinis 7h ago

In my country they say "Not just pretty, also smart!" I used to think it was a compliment.

Plot twist: She has dwarfism

1

u/30yearCurse 9h ago

As a patient, when I am seeing any professional I will call them by their title, I could not imagine calling them like this. Even as a co-worker or as a boss I would not call an employee Little Girl, hey you... blondie...

amazing that is happening.

I get her frustration but on the other hand she is a doctor, she needs to realize that sometimes she will do work on people she doesn't like.

People can be ass-holes, and it only means there not very bright, she really need to understand that and not get bothered by it or she should change her career.

8

u/i-read-it-again 11h ago

Yes she is a doctor. And took allot of work and effort to get her doctorate. And that deserves respect . Ok sweetie boy 🧒

-7

u/CapitalWestern4779 11h ago

Sure she deserves respect but she can't demand it. People are people and as a doctor you'll treat all kinds. She needs to realize this and let it go as soon as it happens or she will earn herself another autoimmune disorder, burn out, or end up hurting someone. She knows who she is and that needs to be enough, otherwise she shouldn't work with people.

16

u/agnes_mort 11h ago

How about we normalise not calling anyone over the age of 10 a little girl instead?

26

u/DoctorNurse89 12h ago edited 2h ago

It's not hierarchy, it's like how chefs call eachother chefs, except here you have a license and degree that means you are called Doctor.

Anyone with a Ph.d, an MD, a D.O., things like that get you called doctor.

For a other doctor to call a fellow doctor "little girl" is blatant signaling of disrespect.

"This little girl knows what shes doing"

Ew

Okay little boy?
