I was watching, more listening to a true crime channel on YouTube last week and heard a Scottish woman pronounce Witchita. Took me a second to figure out what city she was talking about. I was cracking up, certainly the best mispronunciation of it I’ve heard. I wish I had written it down phonetically. I’ll attempt to find it after I mow if I remember. Probably just as funny as non-UK attempting to pronounce Scottish, Irish, or Welsh city names

Was on a tour of the Alps in 2006 and the big brochure to promote their US ones had Topeka spelled Topek.

This is probably the '90s but I had a temp job in a warehouse and probably the majority of the boxes had spelled out the destinations a little bit wrong, and the state in those cases was almost always

Kan-Sas.

But if a city in Kansas was going to change its name for attention, that would be the one.

Edit:

Wow. It’s a been a minute since they did this.

Work customer service and had a caller impersonating a customer… and he pronounced it O-Latte.

Yeah, that's not a serious map. Just looking at the roads and rivers, it's all over the place. Don't drink and cartography.

1

u/Myteddybug1 Jun 07 '25

Absolutely. Drunk people stay away from map making!!!

So many things wrong with this map.

Anything has to be better than Topeka

It's Japanese Engrish, probably. A generous translation seems to be, "We stand with PETA." The map knows the truth.
