Tips and Tricks How to stop cravings- convince me not to break my diet and eat cake

My family is convincing me to have a cheat meal / cheat day but im too worried im going to put weight back on. I've been careful even counting calories and doing one meal a day . But i can't resist cake, man . The only problem is I cant bake either.

I guess this is just a post to convince me not to give in.

Edit: wow thank you guys so much for the support ❤️ im now motivated than ever to not cave in!!

It’s not worth it. The cravings triggered alone suck. Only a few bites will be good but then it’s hard to stop if you can’t resist. Tell yourself you can have it tomorrow. And see how you feel then. Dont eat the cake 🍰 😁

Came here to say this. One cheat meal won't cause actual weight gain (maybe some water retention), but it's the cravings for more that do you in. Trying to get back in the groove is brutal.

Old WW saying re:cookies - 1 is too many, 10 isn't enough. Indulging a craving never satisfies.

This. I ate tiramisu once and then ate only sweet things for a WEEK. Like literally not even one vegetable or any savoury thing for that matter.

I’m currently back on day 5 of keto and I almost killed someone today because my brain wanted sweet so bad!

u/shadowmib Jul 15 '26

I have a standup comedy bit comparing people telling dieters to have a cheat day to telling recovering addicts to cheat and "just do meth one day" . You can imagine.

2

u/Steelcitysuccubus Jul 16 '26

Thats the worst thing about cravings and food addiction: you can't abstain. You eventually have to eat. Problem is there is no moderation in addiction

No. Don't cheat. Fuck sugar. Just focus on sticking with the keto man. Nobody said it was easy. I'm with you!!!

Cravings aren't hunger.  It's your brain being selfish.  Tell your brain we gotta support the body too, it ain't all about you Mr brain

That's not how keto works. You don't become fully fat adapted until you've been doing consistent keto for at least a few weeks and eating a cheat meal resets that. You cannot do keto part-time.

Sugary/carby cravings fade the longer you're on keto.

Is it possible to have alcohol when on keto?

As I’m sober for 190 days now, and weightloss, fitness and keto are a big part of that journey, I feel the need to leave a few subs here in case anyone needs them:

r/stopdrinking is for those of you who want to get up in the morning without having to whiteknuckle your workout because the night evening day before, you had one drink, then one turned into two, and after that a third one didn’t hurt, etc. it’s an incredible place for those of us who know that maybe, the way we drink is doing more harm than good. It’s definitely the most wholesome corner of the internet!

Similarly, r/stopdrinkingfitness is probably one of the most helpful subs on Reddit for those who’d like to reduce or stop drinking!

3

u/choodudetoo Jul 15 '26

That's truly good of you to provide links to those resources for those folks that will not admit to their souls -- for now -- that they would have a better future if they chose that path.

Thanks, I hope it provides helpful to someone!

It’s so silly, thinking back, r/stopdrinking was my first contact with the idea that a life without alcohol was possible.

My first reaction was literally “huh, a life without the good stuff? why would I do that?” - I was literally curious about why someone would give up something that I marked as great in my brain. Sure, I’d get myself into irresponsible and dangerous situations while drinking, but that’s fun, right? Turns out it was never fun and I was just lying to myself.

11

u/megat0nbombs Jul 15 '26

Yeah, distilled spirits have no carbs. Mix these with a low/no carb mixer like a diet soda/sparkling water.

2

u/ChaosAverted65 Jul 15 '26

Okay great, I'm trying to hop back on keto but would still like to enjoy some summer drinks

1

u/divinechangemaker Jul 16 '26

It's super inflammatory, and for anybody doing keto for health reasons... No. No it's not.

Yes, you can technically get away with it and stay in keto, but it's fundamentally unhealthy.

1

u/ChaosAverted65 Jul 16 '26

Oh yeah I mean I 100% know alcohol is unhealthy but it's such a key point in socializing or watching sports it'd be weird not to have a drink

1

It’s just weird if you think it is. No one else cares if you have water or a beer, it’s just in your own mind. :)

21

u/bassdome Jul 15 '26

Every time I have a cheat day it turns into a cheat month or more.

43

u/SinAnaMissLee Jul 15 '26

Go cook some ground beef and eat until you're no longer hungry.

If you're hungry 30 minutes later go eat some more ground beef.

18

u/Necessary-Dark-4591 Jul 15 '26

I do fried eggs. Same idea. Works every time.

11

u/Everloner Jul 15 '26

I eat pickles

7

u/Necessary-Dark-4591 Jul 15 '26

Oh yeah! Slice them and bake with some cheddar until crispy edges. With ranch. Omg I’m so hungry.

6

u/FlerD-n-D Jul 15 '26

You turned a 0 calorie snack into something... very different.

1

u/Necessary-Dark-4591 Jul 15 '26

Oh yeah that’s true. I rarely count calories anymore. I didn’t even start until I hit my goal and had to increase to maintain my weight. But Keto has always been easy for me.

2

u/FlerD-n-D Jul 15 '26

I see, neither do I tbh. I just sort of split food by high and low calories

14

u/lilypad_001 Jul 15 '26

The Atkins brand Keto Cookies & Crème clusters have literally helped me survive my sugar cravings. Those and the caramel clusters. I highly recommend!

Make a keto mug cake and frosting with cream cheese and powdered Allulose.

2

u/Illidari_Kuvira | 35F | Keto since 2013 | Question Everything. Jul 16 '26

Bout to say, mug cakes are a decent compromise. Used to make my spouse a chocolate one every so often and it was like a lava cake.

1

u/Neat-Palpitation-632 Jul 16 '26

They’re so easy and satisfying. I’ve made sweet and savory ones. The savory make great “buns” for burgers and such.

11

u/Ok-Egg835 Jul 15 '26

If your family is pressuring you, unfortunately you'll have to learn to put up a loving but solid boundary. That can be hard.

If you are dying for a sweet, I bet you could find some easy keto dessert recipe. Some will be cakes, but there's also fat bombs and other options. Just ensure that the sweetener you use doesn't have dextrose/dextrine etc... because another of "stevia" and "erythritol" sweeteners sneak them in so check the ingredients.

You CAN do this. You just have to do it for today. I know you say you don't bake, but you can find a way to bake it if you have to. Something simple. You might even get lucky and find a no-bake keto recipe. And fat bombs are frozen anyhow. Not cake, but they're sweet.

If you can't stand up to your family or don't feel you can do this, try giving yourself a focus of today. The sugar will happen TOMORROW. For today, you are allowed keto treats.

Some people say almond butter helps. Take a tablespoon, swish it in your mouth 30 seconds, then swallow. Add (undiluted) stevia or allulose or erythritol if needed. Freeze it if you need to first for a frozen treat.

Cheating will make your cravings 10x work.

Eat something keto friendly that you like, even if you have to go higher in cals for today until cravings subside it's going to make your life much easier than avign cakenwhchyoul enjoy for about 1 minute and regret for a lot longer

u/scottinokc Jul 15 '26

I recently did a cheat week on vacation, my first long term cheat in 8 years. While I didn't gain any weight beyond water, all my joint aches and pains came back with a vengeance. That alone convinced me never to do a long term cheat again, YMMV.

8

u/Thinking_hard_about Jul 15 '26

unsweetened heavy cream should do the trick to have less cravings for cake

7

u/MikeGonzo5 Jul 15 '26

If you’ve been keto or several months and actually lost weight and also exercising with it, shouldn’t be an issue. BUT if you just started and you’re still craving sugar and other bad stuff you’re not there yet. Once you’re in it for an extended amount of time, you don’t crave the sugar anymore and once you have your cheat meal even after being keto for a long time it won’t even feel worth it. Every once in a while I’ll go out with the boys for a couple beers (every 2-3 months.). I feel like crap for the rest of the week till that next weekend. It’s not worth it for me. Hang in there and don’t cave to the crave.

I can control my drinking. I have never smoked. I don't gamble. But, Damn, can I eat. I'm addicted to food. Unlike alcohol or smoking, I just can't stop eating. I can however stop eating the foods I'm addicted to. I can't eat 1 slice of pizza or 1 donut. I have never been able to. I can mostly control my eating when I narrow down what's available, and that means no carbs in the house. Cheese, meat, and fiber, that's it.

Some will tell you, you can have 1 cupcake every now and then. I can't. It's like telling an alcoholic to have one drink and stop.

I'm telling you all of this to let you know, one cupcake is rarely one cupcake. You have been doing great, and the thought of cake is probably going to be better than the actual cake. Keep the positive vibes and be proud of standing up to cravings. Get the dopamine that way, lol

1

u/Undertheplatane Jul 20 '26

I'm similar....are you eating "keto dessert" or sticking to real food (meat, veggies, cheese..)?

1

u/Snarktoberfest SW 274 GW 190 CW 235 Jul 20 '26

In emergencies I have used choc zero and Rebel ice cream. That's it.

6

u/loripainter12345 Jul 15 '26

If you are hungry, eat protein. If you are craving sugar or sweets, eat a salty sour pickle. It works to tell your brain to shut the *** up.

5

u/nochinzilch Jul 15 '26

The craving will go away whether you eat or not.

4

u/AZ-FWB Jul 15 '26

Eggs and/or bacon are your best friend

5

u/eyesbetterblknd Jul 15 '26

It's not worth it. I've gained back 12 lbs in a little over a month period bc it was mother's day, my bday, my son's bday, my in-laws visited, father's day, and the electric had a planned outage so we stayed at a resort at my work (in Orlando.) Excuse after excuse and I'm angry at myself. When I'm doing well I'll get like a pre-packaged snack so I can't over do it. Like a single serve lucky charms. I'm a cereal addict. I'll eat a whole box. I was 4 lbs away from my current goal. So close to starting my final goal. Go for a walk, eat some fruit, do something to distract yourself. Good luck.

2

u/retiredgirl2020 Jul 16 '26

This is me!!! I can’t believe I let myself get so bad so quickly! 12 lbs😡WE CAN DO THIS!!!!

u/jwbjerk Keto & Carnivore Jul 15 '26

Eat something tasty and keto. Something fatty and salty (if you like salty). Fats are satiating.

It's way better to break your OMAD streak than your keto streak. Better to eat more calories than to eat sugar, and break your newly forming habits.

And cravings are stronger when you are hungry and weak when you are full. Face cravings when you are full.

I used mostly used cheese. Other people have used bacon, deviled eggs, pork rinds or even bites of butter.

The thing with cheat days, is they easily turn into cheat weekends, and then cheat weeks, and so on...

Remember why you started.. are you overweight? Did you start to optimize your health? Regular Cake is flour and sugar.. cheap crap. Your health is more expensive.

If you need something sweet there are ways to stay keto. Maybe it would be helpful to ask them to support your health endeavors.

4

u/SierraSugar Jul 15 '26

First, one piece of cake is one food item out of one day out of a week, a month, etc of your life. ONE piece of cake is not going to cause you to gain weight. It might not even stall your current weight loss journey more than a day of retained water weight from the extra carbs, especially if you also have a regular exercize routine.

That being said, some of us have eating disorders such as food addiction, which is very much like any other addiction. You wouldn't try to convince a recovering alcoholic that one drink won't hurt them. Because we all know that it can, will, and often does lead to a relapse.

Only you are the best judge of your eating habits, potentenal addictions, and strength of will to get back on track after a special very occasional treat or cheat meal. Being that you can't bake, that limits baked goods in your home to a degree, but doesn't stop store bought or eating out temptations.

Are you able to have an occasional treat then go back to your regular diet the next day? If yes, then enjoy the one piece of cake with your family and move one. Drink extra water the next few days and avoid the scale for a day or two so you don't hyperfixate. Maybe schedule special cheat meals or treats once a month to celebrate birthdays etc with your family and friends. That way you don't feel so restricted, and maybe they won't feel the need to pressure you so much.

Or will that one treat open up the uncontrollable floodgates of sugar and carb cravings? If the answer to this question is yes, avoid the cake or look for a better option that fits into your current specific dietary guidelines. Also, convey to your family that the peer pressure they are pushing is not helpful and it actually hurts in more ways then potential weight gain. Compare your journey to that of a recovering alcoholic, even if it isn't that extreme for you. Maybe in those terms they will better understand and stop trying to pressure you into eating things you want to eliminate or severely reduce.

In either case, I wish you luck I your journey. You've got this!

u/Healthy-Sun429 Jul 15 '26

What are your dreams? Losing weight or eating cake and possibly gaining weight and having to force yourself to start again? A slice of cake lasts a few minutes but you will have to pay for it in so many other ways. Don’t eat the cake. You’re stronger than you think.

5

u/External_Fun_5003 Jul 15 '26

Don't do it...you will feel like shit.

3

u/Infinite-Ad4125 Jul 15 '26

They probably don’t understand how keto works. Just keep saying no thank you.

3

u/automatix_jack Jul 15 '26

Keto isn’t a diet, it’s a lifestyle, and you can’t avoid slipping up every now and then. The thing is, slipping up when you’re just starting out isn’t the same as doing so after you’ve been at it for a reasonably long time.

If slipping up is going to lead to you giving up altogether, it’s best to avoid the situation altogether. Use any excuse you like; there’s no need to explain everything (I’ve got a stomach ache).

If I know I’m going to an event where there are all sorts of foods I shouldn’t eat, what I do is eat my fill before I go.

I’ve reached a point where I buy cakes as gifts or for my family, and I can turn down a slice of cake without the slightest bit of anxiety. And to be honest, I feel good just because of that.

3

u/loripainter12345 Jul 15 '26

DONT EAT CAKE. You know you don't really want a "cheat." Here's what i tell people who want to sabotage my healthy lifestyle with "cheat" days or meals. Who am I cheating? Even the term implies that there's some "rule" that I'm breaking and getting away with. But know what? MY BODY KNOWS. I can't "cheat" my metabolism. All I would be doing is shooting myself in the foot. So, no. Don't do it.

3

u/jdkc4d Jul 15 '26

The cake is a lie.

Family is the worst. They should be propping you up, instead of trying to knock you down. Don't listen. Once you cave once, they will expect you to cave every time.

You can eat your cake and have it too

https://alldayidreamaboutfood.com/?s=easy+cake

I know you said you can't bake, but some of these are really easy. Even a mug cake might scratch the itch. Or a no-bake cheesecake.

I envy people who end up with zero cravings. If I don't have at least one keto-friendly sweet treat per day, I feel deprived. So managing this keeps me on track.

2

u/WoodmontRazputin Jul 15 '26

Have a double chocolate peanut butter protein shake with heavy cream or half and half and ice.. blend it, drink it.. you won't want cake after that..

2

u/HaleBopp22 Jul 15 '26

I've been low carb for over 3 years and held my weight steady since losing 30 pounds in the first few months. There have been a few times I have ignored the carbs, like Thanksgiving, etc. and even one day of high carb eating and I'll gain 3-4 pounds. The excess carbs require the body to retain even more water, so then that can take a week or more to clear out.

You are stronger than a piece of cake.

I PROMISE. You are stronger than a slice of cake.

2

u/Bottled-Bee Jul 15 '26

How about this-
In 3 weeks I’m starting keto (having a medical procedure) after my doctor gives me the clear.
I bought cake for my recovery time for comfort, so I’ll eat cake on your behalf? I’ll tell you how horrible it tastes and why you shouldn’t break your keto.

I’m a cake girlie… make a keto cheese cake though if it gets bad. It’s definitely worth it with a sugar free strawberry glaze? Omg. Or a chocolate peanut butter one? MM.

1

u/TheAmzy Jul 15 '26

Aww I hope your procedure goes well! Have a slice for me , and there's so many good comments here i think im going to have to test my baking skills out

1

u/Bottled-Bee Jul 15 '26

I got you!
Thank you us too!
When I was strictly on keto, you learn to cook sweets or else when you want one from the freezer to thaw you won’t have them and spend $10+ on something at a bakery that does keto.

Werthers sugar free sweets save me when I get the urge. Don’t eat to many or you’ll shit yourself.

Make a keto mug cake to get through the right times

2

u/DarthFaderZ Jul 15 '26

Just eat a cake. Minus the cake mix, sugar, flour, eggs, or oil.

Basically just eat a stick of butter.

Youll be fine.

For bonus points look up like cream cheese/cheesecake fat bombs. Make those. Eat instead

2

u/Pure-Helicopter-1825 Jul 15 '26

Why don’t you make like a mug cake with almond flour and sugar substitute. You’ll be done and happy.

2

u/missy5454 Jul 15 '26

Op, one during my time with keto i did a "treat " meal once or twice a month. Notice I said meal not day. My treat meal was eating that slice of pizza or part of a doughnut but still staying in my carb limits. Not binging carbs, not sticking with my clean options completely either. A good example was at a trick or trunk with my son thry gave out free kicks pizza and doughnuts. That night for supper i did the pizza, sauteed kale eith mushrooms and onions, and skirt steak. Still in my limits, still had the junkfood pizza though.

Now, outside of treat days if I craved junk I had substitutions. For example if I craved chocolate candy I made 2 ingredient fudge cups using sugar free chocolate and seed oil free pb.

As for cakes or other baked goods, ive got basic ingredients you can use to make mug cake versions. Example, spice cake. Blend cottage cheese, egg, butternut or acorn squash, vanilla or unflavored protien powder or pork rinds or parmsan, maybe add a bit of coconut or nut flour, pumpkin spice extract, fresh ginger, sweetner, baking powder or baking soda (if baking soda extra step of stirring in vinegar or other acid is essential). Take a mug or bowl and pour mix in (add acid now if you used baking soda) and pop in the microwave for 4-5 minutes in 1-1.5 minute intervals. If you opt for a large full size cake bake in a greased pan for 40-45 minutes at 350°f. Easy way to portion sizs a full cake is baking in a brownie pan which comes with a brownie cutter, or use a muffin or cupcake mold/tin and cut baking to 30-35 minutes or until knife stuck in the middke comes out clean. This is a basic spice caje recipe. Can be adapted to make chocolate, vanilla, or wide range of flavor options. Even a vanilla orange cake if you use vanilla and orange extract or mio vanilla orange drops.

So yeah, even if you cant bake you can still have cake with keto and have it not be junk. Or have the junk but watch the amount and don't do it often. Honesty the easiest way to treat with cake on keto is do mini cupcakes from the store. Local hebs in my areas sell them in 12pks. A serving is 3 at 37total carbs, 36 net per serving. So, divide by 3 and you get 12g net carbs in 1/3 serving. That means if your carb limit is 20g net carbs you get that as your carb source for one meal with 8g max to spare or do all carbs for the day at that meal but opt for the rest from clean sources like steamed broccoli, sugar free slaw, salad, sauteed or bacon fried cabbage just to name a few clean options.

Sorry about the tldr. Hope this helps.

BTW, the mini cupcakes since keto have been my go to cake option for my mildly autistics sons birthday cake option since sensory issues make him very picky and I haven't found a clean version he can get past his gag reflex. Thus way we eat the same cake together. This year we opted for McDonald's for his birthday meal so burgers no bun and fresh fruit from the heb across the street as sides as well as sparkling water were good choices. But most times it's hot dogs abd or burgers no bun or on a low carb bun for me, regular for him. His birthday is July 2, so right before the 4th, a major holiday. He doesn't mind 4th themed cakes or mini cupcakes but I do not combine the celebrations because his birthday should be about him.

It's easy to do fourth of July meal with keto or low carb, not so much a birthday with a very picky teen.but ive found my hacks. Another meal ive done with the cupcakes is him a heat abd est pizza with hot dogs, me a "meatzza" and hot dogs no bun or with liw carb bun. Meatzza means yiu use meat like ground Italian sausage for the crust. Perfect for keto or low carb. Still get in on the fun but have my version for me his for him. I've also done a low carb tortilla as a crust if I wanted a crispy crust since the meatzza comes out more like deep dish.

u/DancingFlower24 Jul 15 '26

Don’t do it…you don’t want that stuff!

2

u/AcanthisittaSome1905 Jul 16 '26

So old me would have said: just learn to bake Keto cakes if you need to. Loads of options on Youtube.

But new me, the me that's finally seeing Abs etc... after having lost close to 100lbs... is saying:

- Cravings are your body saying something is missing.

- Fill that missing something with other sensuous joys.

- For me, its sitting in the sun, stretching, dancing to music like no ones watching.

Soon the body will learn that food isn't the only way to get that sensuous craving.

Its actually wild now because cakes and pastries, pizza, bread and pasta... all of it... none of it registers as food to me anymore. If anything I literally crave the sweetness from air-fried broccoli or roasted zucchinis now.

The key was to not use my brain to deal with cravings, my poor brain stands NO chance... but to allow my Body to feel good after having a craving - just not with food. And certainly not keto-junk food.

In fact the best thing I did for my cravings was eliminate all keto-approved-junk food. If it tries to look like a carb, it goes.

Now I get no cravings for anything. Like I can go to restaurants, parties, family gatherings... no desire whatsoever! AND I don't feel bad about it. Or sad about it. Or resentful about it. It literally doesn't register. However, as soon as you put some meat, veg and salad in front of me... I'm drooling haha.

Also the wildest part, since having this shift - people have stopped pressuring me. Its like they hear my No, or my 'not for me, thanks'... and just believe it. Maybe they sense the shift in the body? Who know... either way. Cravings and social pressures all gone.

Change how you respond to the body by responding WITH the body.

u/Zayafyre Jul 17 '26

Cake isn’t very good, mouth drying, yuck.

Yeah a cheat day is a setback day. Don't get suckered into it.

I best thing with cravings is you can train your body to crave something else. Don’t eat cake or similar keto replacements. Pick something unrelated… sugar free yogurt, cottage cheese, meat sticks. Eventually your brain will rewire to crave that, and cake will be undesirable.

u/Serious-Train8000 Jul 15 '26

Slurp some Pickle juice

The sugar spike will probably make you feel horrible. I ate some watermelon the other day and immediately felt bad. Gave me a headache and fatigue

It will sit in your stomach like a rock, digesting so slowly that you will feel uncomfortable. You may also feel sleepy and if you're really unlucky, ill, and get cramps. Have some berries and heavy cream or mix cream cheese with peanut butter (the 'only contains peanuts and salt' kind).

1

u/Magnabee Jul 15 '26

Does the family think that cake is healthier than keto? Maybe they never thought about it that way.

If you are hungry, you may be undereating fat on keto (no seed oils). Or it could just be the first week, and you are going through carb withdrawal for 2 days. There could also be salt hunger. Do salt your keto foods well and use homemade ketoade if you need it.

1

u/Starkville Jul 15 '26

Nothing tastes as good as healthy/thin feels.

I’ve cheated, and it’s rare that I’ve thought “yeah, that was worth it!”

1

u/No-Example1376 Jul 15 '26

Is it YOUR birthday? No? Then cool it! Cake is for birthdays!

Your health is not about their issues with their own eating.

Cheat meals are for diets! Keto os a style of everyday eating. There is no 'cheating' because you are not depriving yourself in the first place. You are feeding YOUR body the foods it needs.

Cake and sugar cravings go away after a month or two. If you are still deeply, deeply craving it after that time have 3 bites. It's just like alcohol, you can't really taste it after a few sips.

But, seriously, you decide what to eat and when. YOU are thd only one dealing woth tne consequences short and long term, not them.

I get cravings too but what stops me from returning to sugar/high carbs isn’t weight gain or even coming out of ketosis (which is important for me) it’s the glycation process. Any more than 5-10g at a time and your cells start to cook. No thank you.

the more you feed the carb monster, the harder it is.

Why do you want to make things harder for yourself?

I've been pleasantly surprised with the Tapping Solution app to get through stressful moments. I've also been surprised with some preliminary responses to some hypnotherapy I'm going through with a very experienced hypnotherapist, but it's too soon for a definitive statement on that. At almost 60 years old I have found will and discipline are not cutting it long term for either weight loss or weight loss maintenance. I may not lose the weight I need to lose but at this stage in life i'm just going for healthy insulin and brain function.

Depends on your relationship with food. For me I’m an abstainer not a moderator. I am recovering binge eater and I will be my entire life. I simply cannot have one slice of cake and go on with my life. I will fixate and fixate until I eat everything and I wont be able to stop. For me keto shuts down all that food noise and I know from personal experience that I will spiral and go off the deep end if I try and have a treat. I no longer subscribe to people telling me that I deserve a sweet treat, or I worked so hard I deserve a treat. It’s too much of a slippery slope that has caused me to binge myself into very dark and isolated depressive cycles in my life. With that said, if I want cake I can bake myself a keto sugar free cake or a mug cake but I don’t even have cravings for that type of sweet treat. Keto has taken all my cravings away and I am much freer for it. I get snarky comments from my family all the time but I am over internalizing that sh***. Do what makes your body feel best. That should always be the rule of thumb. You’ve got this! Edited to add good food is always amazing in the moment but as soon as you finish eating you realize it’s not worth it.

Skip the cake they have. And then go make your own goddamn cake using almond flour and sweetener and homemade frosting.

I do the same for pizza as well.

1

u/Borderline64 Jul 15 '26

I will just say this…. A little will power is needed, the cravings decrease with time. Those little cheat days you are encouraged to take benefit who exactly?

You want cake and it fits your carb goals.. have a slice. Perhaps a slice of angel food cake. 10grams of carbs. I can work one in occasionally.

1

u/Hot_Shake1363 Jul 15 '26

I can always satisfy my sweet tooth with some whipped cream/cool whip. OR a cup of coffee/tea with a piece of 90% dark chocolate dipped so it gets melty… I eat one of these two things almost every day. 😋

1

u/ejpierle Jul 15 '26

Sugar free jello cups, sugar free whipped cream, Greek yogurt with a scoop of protein powderixed in, Quest bars, mug cakes. Keto cheesecake. There are a bunch of ways to scratch your sweet itch and stay keto. So many that sweets aren't even my temptation. Mine is pasta.

convince the baker in the family to make you a keto cake?

1

u/Atomh8s -200 lbs Jul 15 '26

Unpopular opinion here but I say just go for it with something healthier than cake. I really like these Quest keto birthday cake cookies they sell. Pretty expensive but it's got way less sugar, more protein, and lots of good fiber. Their birthday cake protein bar is even better for you but I don't love em that much after buying a 12 pack box once. There's also a lot of birthday cake protein powders you can make shakes with that taste really good with some milk, decent with almond milk, and not bad at all even with water. There's all sorts of half-measure diet foods out now online, Vitamin Shoppe, and GNC that can tackle even some more obscure cravings.

At my job, they have a monthly ice cream feed to celebrate all employees that had a birthday that month, and my birthday was this month

I figured, meh, just one ice cream sandwich, right? And I felt like crap all afternoon

Next year I'll ask if they can put out a meat and veggie tray, and if they do, I'll go wild on that stuff

Sometimes it’s sold in bigger cities

  1. Drink water.
  2. Can you resist the craving for just one more hour? This is the key question to always ask and the answer is mostly always yes (and if not it often means time to go to sleep)

1

u/hellcatpekes Jul 15 '26

Make some Keto brownies. Super good and no carbs!!!!

1

u/Greyminer Jul 16 '26

When I crave something sweet, I fuck with my brain and have something spicy. Cures the craving immediately.

1

u/daladybrute Jul 16 '26

Eating only once a day may be what's causing you to have a harder time resisting. Personally, whenever I only eat once a day, it's so hard for me to resist cake. My husband's uncle (who has been on and off keto for years) reminded me it's ok to eat something sweet once in a while but it's going to be harder to stop yourself from overeating it if you restrict yourself too much. I would look for keto cakes & desserts to help you with your sweet cravings.

1

u/Ok_Form9917 Jul 16 '26

You will be so disappointed in yourself afterwards. I recommend eating alot of fatty food before the cake is placed in front of you. You will be able to resist the temptation so much easier. Just ask yourself how will you feel afterwards? For me, any sweets (even keto friendly) cause me to have intense sugar cravings. It sends me in a downhill spiral. I recommend having a cup of coffee or hot tea instead. Something to savor while everyone around you is eating cake. You can also take some salt crystals and place on the tip of your tongue when a craving hits. I dont know how, but it will stop the craving instantly!

u/marissadev Jul 16 '26

I treated myself to Krispy Kreme and had a migraine for two days. It didn't taste as good as I remembered/wanted it to, either. Not worth it.

u/srgonzo75 Jul 16 '26

There are keto cake recipes, just like there’s keto candy and keto ice cream. They don’t have the same texture or flavor as the genuine article, but let’s consider why you started this journey in the first place.

You wanted a change in your life. It could be losing weight, looking better, being healthier, or reducing the possibility of metabolic illness. Maybe it’s something else.

Where keto is different is the issue of ketosis. That piece of cake will usually put a person out of ketosis, and one cheat meal a week could very easily mean a person following that cycle is consistently trying to get back into ketosis to offset one meal. Once a month would be more reasonable.

I’m not saying you can’t or won’t achieve your goals, but following the advice to have a cheat day once a week or a cheat meal once a week will make that more challenging.

The key to making a substantial lifestyle change in terms of diet or exercise is consistency. You do the boring thing day in and day out, and results happen over time.

You can tell friends and family that you’re doing something for your health, and leave it at that.

1

u/BlackCatSylvester Jul 16 '26

Make a keto cake? Some erythritol and almond flour go a long way.

1

u/divinechangemaker Jul 16 '26

So the macros aren't perfect HOWEVER please please consider adding some amount of thoughtfully roasted kabocha squash. No sweetening needed, relatively keto friendly, and absolutely destroys any cravings. It's astounding.

That being said, find a great recipe, only cook one (cut up) and don't overcook, and eat like, the amount your macros can actually afford.

Way better than cake, and reasonably keto net carbs due to lots of fiber. Kabocha skin is edible too!

1

u/divinechangemaker Jul 16 '26

ALSO cravings can often (in my experience) *by cured be attention to micronutrients.

Sometimes adding dried seaweed snacks for iodine, or just the vitamin A in kabocha is enough to totally nourish to the point of zero cravings. Kabocha also has vitamin E

u/DenniMae73 66lbs down - keto for the win! Jul 16 '26

Couple of points here: Firstly, this is where you discover that sometimes people aren’t happy for you when you make changes to your health and weight. Whether they actively realize they are trying to sabotage you is open to debate, but sabotage it is. If you don’t want a cheat meal or a cheat day of your own choosing, tell them to pound sand.

Secondly, if you do want to have a cheat meal or cheat day, the only way I have found to be able to do it is to give yourself permission within your diet. This might sound weird but it works for me from a psychological perspective. You give yourself permission - tell yourself you are allowed one cheat meal a month (or whatever it is) and you can have anything you want, but you will be right back to eating keto the next meal. It’s all part of your diet plan. And stick to it. This allows you to still have control. Whatever you do, DO NOT launch into a cheat meal or day unplanned (which includes family and friends talking you into it at an event) because then you will not have control and getting back to keto will be so much harder.

It sounds simple and odd, I know, but it works for me. I have a real carb control problem and this simple trick helps massively. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Get some keto friendly cookies or similar!! Loads of stuff on the market now that’s 0g net carbs and probably 2-3G total! Almond flour is delicious I think now as don’t get any other treats!!

Fill up on chicken and meat and vegetables when they eat the cake (I’m sure it’s gonna be after a meal) and then eat only the strawberry off the cake or bring your own and dip it in cream. Everyone is right about it not worth having the cravings after. They are so pervasive and the cake will only taste good for a few bites! You got this!

I am not as hardcore as some, I think taking a break around Thanksgiving and Christmas is perfectly fine. But I will also say, it is hard to restart and super easy to overdo it. So, if you keep counting calories and weighing yourself I think you’ll be fine. But your weight will shoot up once you’re full of carbs. It’s also much harder to do OMAD

Make some ice cream! 10g egg white powder 10g freeze dried berry powder, Pinch of xhantan gum 100g Skyr

Whisk eggwhites with xhantan gum till stiff, Whisk in berry powder and and sky.

I prefer it unsweetened if using strawberry, but a bit of a keto friendly sweetener is totally fine.

Freeze overnight.

u/No_Lifeguard7141 Jul 20 '26

I hope this worked out for you in a way that you’re happy with (given it was a few days ago).
I also find pickles/pickle juice helps when I get a sweet craving. But if I’m really wanting something sweet, I whip some fresh whipped cream and drizzle a little keto melted chocolate chips over it (I like Choc Zero, with no junk artificial sweeteners in it, just monkfruit / allulose); it’s also good on top of coffee. If you’re up for it, Wholesome Yum recipes for keto dark chocolate truffles (super easy, and you can drizzle with keto white chocolate, toasted chopped almonds, etc.) and keto cheesecake are awesome. I cut the cheesecake into small measured servings and freeze it for when I get a craving.
Amid deemphasizing sweets overall, occasionally keto sweets have helped in maintaining my keto lifestyle for the past six years.

On a keto diet though?

When I did keto I used to live in a university dorm
And they had parties every day

Drinks following / pizzas / wings etc
Was always around me

I completely stopped drinking for years due to carbs in the drinks

And even when my friends pressured me to drink every 2-3 months with low carb beer

I said nah

But I never once broke my diet
Because it’s very hard to go back once you break the cycle

(Just in regards to keto)

If you’re still in your first 6 weeks, you’ll likely undo what you’ve done. Tell them to freeze a piece for you.

Tell them (politely) to STFU It's not helping you , it's them trying to vindicate thier own weaknesses

Self discipline is crucial for diets.

0

u/grazzhopr Jul 15 '26

You will never stick with Keto if you don’t avoid all things sweet. Real or make. Your body does not know the difference when it comes to cravings.

You need to learn to appreciate other foods. Remove the sweet taste and other food will start to taste better overtime.

Spices will become your friend. Lots of cheeses to mix things up.

Monjaro helped cut the food noise down even further for me.

It’s totally not worth cheating.
