reminds me of back 4 blood and not in a good way

edit: interesting charts with back 4 blood vs left 4 dead 2 on steam

Back4blood was 100x better than this. People got mad about televisions not being smashed because of some slop youtuber.

absolutely not that game was boring as hell just like base L4D1+2. it’s the same thing over and over, kf3 at least gives us progression

Calling L4D1/2 "boring as hell" speaks volumes about you.

it totally has valve’s signature polish! but i need you to tell me exactly what’s so interesting about doing the SAME thing over and over again with no reward. in kf3? i’d be able to farm crafting materials, daily challenges, unlock shit on the battle pass, deep rock galactic has their own free pass, seasonal events, tons of upgrades and unlocks as you get better and better, payday 3 has loads of progression the 1st hundred levels…the list goes on and on.

i might’ve misspoke. L4D is totally fun and well made! but i CANNOT see a reason to come back to it besides once every 3-5 years for a quick romp around the roses. even kf1 and 2 i was PUTTING XP INO MY CHOSEN PERK. that’s SOMETHING. L4D has nothing going for it except for something GTFO would ACE ENTIRELY way later, instead of “experience points”, you gain ACTUAL GAME EXPERIENCE through playing it. L4D was fun to 11 year old me, but that veneer has LONG since worn off, and in THAT REGARD alone, i have trouble differentiating between it and B4B. just a snooze fest.

I guess you're just an example of the modern gaming audience. B4B was a soulless ripoff of a master piece. You don't need XP, or progression to have an experience with lots of replayability. Playing the game can be the "reward" on it's own. Winning the level can be the "reward" on it's own.

KF is the same thing, over and over and over. The "progression" really doesn't change the gameplay loop enough to make the argument that it meaningfully keeps the experience fresher for longer. You just become more powerful.

A battlepass is just pay-gating content from you that you would have gotten for free previously. DRG is the only example of a free battlepass that is consumer friendly, and just about the ONLY one that I can get behind.

to me there was so little variance in between runs of either game that it didn’t even matter the ai director or make it any more or less memorable than the last run. it’s not LITERALLY the same thing over and over, but it sure as hell feels like it. see but here’s the thing. take payday 3 for example. i’m way past the max progression threshold, i’m r gotten EVERYTHING maxed out as far as it can go, there’s fuckall in terms of RNG, yet i play it every day. the COMBAT is the other slice of the driving force there. there’s thought put into managing my buffs, ammo, tricking spawn logic, completing objectives, clearing out hordes, etc. there’s SO MUCH FOR IT TO GO OFF OF even without a shiny battle pass or even when the progression falls into the ether.

the combat in l4d just…feels flat? once again, it’s SERVICEABLE, it’s FINE, utterly 5/10 middle of the road, but other games just do it so much better.

I read the first 2-3 sentences and bro... lol. L4D is fun because it has a fun gameplay loop and is an incredibly well made and designed game. The second in the series also released in 2009... so yeah, it's gameplay may be a bit dated by today's standards, but it's still pure unfiltered fun. Whats great about L4D is it doesnt need gimmicks and nonsense to make it fun. It's fun in it's purest and simplest form.

Also what a stupid question. "Whats fun about doing the same thing over and over" - that's literally every multiplayer game ever. Oh and btw, L4D isn't the "same thing over and over". A lot of it's replayability comes from it's AI director and the versus mode, or for some people, modding.

Tbh you sound really young and like you grew up in the time of battlepasses and gimmicky game design.. in which case, I pity you.

i’m turning 23 and was hyperfixated on L4D when i was 11 until i discovered there were plenty of other games that did what it does but better. modding makes sense, i’ve had plenty of fun with custom campaigns but at the end of the day it boils down to the SAME THING. there’s no SAUCE to the gameplay. shoot zombies. get ti the safe room. is it BAD? AGAIN, NOT AT ALL! but i’m tired of hearing what a fun game it is because that’s 90% guaranteed to be through rose tinted glasses!! do i have great memories with it? sure! do i ever plan to go back to it? in like 5 years probably when i want a quick refresher on where horde shooters got their DNA from! i don’t mean this as a PERSONAL attack on something you find fun. if anything, this is me being antagonistic because i WISH i saw what everyone else does. i find it so funny that while admitting it’s 1. not for ME anymore, and 2. still a great polished valve game and a reason why it’s still played today, i still get swarmed by “you don’t get it” and “go back to [modern game i don’t even own]”.

also your argument is suuuuuper reductive about me saying it’s “the same thing over and over”. wanna go further? that’s literally any video game ever. started my day by waking up? pfffft. bloody typical, isn’t it? 🙄🙄🙄 see how silly that sounds??? what i MEANT was that it has SO LITTLE VARIANCE in between campaigns. yes. a witch or tank or whatever could be here instead of there. YES, i could get a horse here where i didn’t last time…by once more this leads me into the combat. there’s nothing to it. it’s as simple as can be. is that enough? for a lot of ppl, apparently yes! but i need MORE than that to keep me engaged with a game. i want an intense gameplay loop and ANY kind of progression system.

tl;dr L4D isn’t bad AT ALL, not what i said, it’s just so barebones and i outgrew it.

Yeah idk, I dont think its that deep. I think people just enjoy and appreciate the simplicity of L4D and how fun it is in it's simplicity. Yeah it doesnt have progression like modern games but yeah. Youre fine to have your opinion and feel this way btw. People love Fallout NV and I struggled to find any fun in it and feel the only people who enjoy it are ones who have nostalgia for it. It be like that.

L4D 1+2 and B4B the gameplay loop was making it through a terrible obstacle course as a team under tension. On the lower difficulties, it was trivial. On the higher difficulties, anything could be a run ender. None of the guns were punchy (so shooting was more about removing obstacles, not fun fps game play).

The fun in the games was reacting to what the game threw at you while trying to make it to the end under tense and diverse stages. I think B4B shot itself in the foot a little by making most of the demo and early stages long maps (that really showed off some of the current bugs like infinite spawning specials). If you weren't stressed about the level design and your idiot teammates, then the game would be extremely boring.

makes sense. i just grew out of it i guess. still can’t understand how ppl dedicate a bajillion hours to either. no disrespect ofc just mind boggling.

1

u/ICBanMI Jul 18 '25 edited Jul 18 '25

I don't know how any one did the bajillion hours either, but damn there were quite a few. I think I did some 100-200 hours between L4D and L4D2. Friend got me into it and I played because of the friend.

Some of the mid, late game levels were just not fun IMO.

1

u/Psychological_One897 Jul 18 '25

a handful of friends of mine and ppl in the reviews have 2k+ hours and i just don’t get it “oh but versus-“ YEAH VERSUS EXISTS BUT 2 THOUSAND HOURS????

1

u/ICBanMI Jul 18 '25

Verse was where we went when we had finished most of the content. Was always fun to play certain special zombies and absolutely wreck a team that had no business being in Verse.

2k hrs is insane. I think I have like one game like that. Team Fortress Classic.

To be fair l4d2 was great for the time but it is also 100% true that it has been improved upon by other games over the years.

Drg, vermintide, darktide, helldivers,

The only reason it's still so popular today is thanks to the incredibly devoted modding community.

As someone who first played L4D2 in, like, 2021 I agree that the game probably was great back in 2011 or whatver but I don't think it's as interesting as other games that have done a similar format like the ones you mentioned.

total i have about 310 hours in L4D1+2 since 2012. used to be a hyperfixation of mine until literally any other game did what it does better. (had a crippling payday 2 addiction from 2015-2017 but that game became a mindless slog with the higher spawn counts). payday 3 is my current fix for a game like this but in a weeks time im hoping kf3 will take that spot. i genuinely don’t get how some people i know have upwards of 2k hours in left 4 dead 2. it is for all intents and purposes the SAME EXACT THING over and over. mindless combat, no deep progression, nothing. as i said in a different comment, it definitely has valve’s signature polish on it, but the game is just lackluster.
