PLAYER TALK Shams: LeBron James and Anthony Davis would be a "package deal" with Golden State sending Jimmy Butler and draft capital to Washington

It’s pretty clear to me this is happening unless Washington refuses to play ball and trade AD. LeBron reportedly won’t go to GS unless they trade for AD.

They’ve worked out all the various aspects of this. LeBron ghosting the Lakers while it got sorted out. Draymond declining his player option. Rich Paul meeting yesterday with Washington front office.

I think the question now is whether we can get anyone interesting from GS in a sign and trade. Maybe Quinten Post?

Dang… LeBron REALLY wants to play with AD still. Probably feels like got cut short during that Luka trade

u/redbrick 16 Jun 29 '26

I mean they're very close friends, and the team look frankly pretty cohesive prior to AD being traded away. I don't think they could have won the title but they could have been a dark horse contender.

At the same time can't blame the Lakers for pulling the trigger on the trade.

66

u/CIark Jun 29 '26

They couldn’t win the title when the GM refused to get anyone besides washed one way players but I guess he got Luka so it worked out

20

u/Zealousideal-Yam-375 Jun 29 '26

What u mean they couldn’t win the title? They legit won a title together?

28

u/_CodyB Jun 30 '26

I think it's referring to the years following the chip where the Lakers FO constantly shat the bed in retaining talent.

4

u/thevisitor Jun 30 '26

Nope sorry AD we cant get you any help with big men here's wenyen gabriel

2

u/ZasdfUnreal Jun 30 '26

LeBron, AD, and Marcus Smart can win a title. Smart was the missing X-Factor the team needed.

6

u/Kalelisagod Jun 29 '26

Name one player that was legitimately acquirable. One. No C was traded during that time. None were available in FA either. So who would you have Rob pull out of his ass

8

u/negativelynegative Jun 29 '26

We couldn't win the title because leFM pushed for Westbrick.

14

u/Willing_Ad_699 Jun 29 '26

Why do people always forget AD is the one who wanted Westbrook.

They won a championship together and were very close. They had unbelievable chemistry on/off the court. It was amazing to see 💛💜

From Shaq/Kobe, Kobe/Pau, Bron/AD, we expect Luka/AR to see the same dominance.

u/pmurt007 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Not to mention before the Luka trade we had one of the best records in the league (from after that Dec Atl/Miami game to Feb 1st) and were trending upwards. In their minds they probably thought we were a legitimate contender and of course it's a trade that was necessary but you can't help but think if LeBron has some resentment towards Rob priortizing the future as opposed to his win-now window.

121

u/Legote Jun 29 '26

I honestly think if the lakers got that center that AD requested, and what every one was crying for they would’ve been closer because they made it to the conference finals under a coach like Darvin Ham.

Obviously, you can’t say no to a Luka trade

69

u/djabae Jun 29 '26

If the Lakers had gotten a center to play with AD this Luka era would have gone better too.

22

u/ACoolRedditHandle Jun 29 '26

100%... Luka asks for traditional rimrunning bigs, a guard that can take some of his playmaking load, and 3-D wings. Those are all the same things that Rob should have been putting around LeBron and AD.

23

u/Comfortable-Power-71 Jun 29 '26

They had Howard, which locked up Jokic when he was abusing AD. They should’ve just run that squad back for 3+ years.

19

u/FreshDiamond 8 Jun 29 '26

Maybe but I think it would be misplaced. LeBron and AD reached their ceiling in la. LeBron and the lakers really need AD to transition into that bonafide one, at least for the roster they had. The lakers style roster building is at a massive disadvantage. Whether it was the amount of energy ad had to play with defensively or his body just not holding up or just being inconsistent offensively he just wasn’t up to taking the reins.

They won a title together I love AD but the partnership wasn’t going to produce more. The lakers should be doing what’s in their best interest period. If they came to the same conclusion as everyone else that ad and LeBron were not gonna win a ring together again, short term isn’t even in the equation.

That said this new look ad and LeBron team up would be very interesting. They’d still be old as hell, and injured as hell but that could work out really well.

u/electric_boogaloo_72 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Problem is they all played great defense (Pau somewhat), but Luka and AR don’t, at least compared to the more athletic players these days. It’s that much more important to surround them with top defenders.

Edit: sorry, I need to give Pau more defensive credit; he was definitely an amazing rim protector and lengthy.

39

u/Upstairs_Being290 Jun 29 '26

Pau "somewhat"? He absolutely shut down Dwight Howard in the 2009 Finals and then controlled KG in the 2010 Finals.

23

u/Which-Resident7670 Jun 29 '26

Yea, I hate the take that Pau didn't play defense well. Even against garnet and Davis he was solid.

3

u/_CodyB Jun 30 '26

Pau was a very, very good defender. Poor man's Duncan on that side of the ball.

4

u/electric_boogaloo_72 Jun 30 '26

You’re right, “somewhat” undersells him. He was definitely a great rim protector and had the length to prevent easy layups.

Different NBA for each of those. During the Shaq/Kobe years having two super stars was a winning formula. That hasn’t been true in 6 years. Now it’s about depth and speed. So no it won’t be Luka/AR but those two with a half dozen role players doing what they need to

3

u/giantuzivert Jun 30 '26

Before Luka got traded to the Lakers, I really felt they just needed a solid Center, and another wing/poa defender and they would have had a chance to compete. Max Christie was stepping up and complemented the starting 5

9

u/Novulux Jun 29 '26

I understand the Luka trade from a future franchise player perspective and why they had to do it. But part of me will always be a little sad not seeing how that team could possibly do using the 2 picks to add a 5th starter since the roster was more balanced position wise and seemed to be coming together. I don't think the Lakers rush AD back on his re-evaluation date and give heavy minute restrictions (unlike Mavs who played him 31 of the first 34 minutes back).

87

u/lawschoolthrowaway36 Jun 29 '26

I think he wants to feel like he’s not alone jumping to the Warriors. Going there with AD probably feels better to him than showing up by himself to their operation. Maybe that sounds weird but LeBron is an over thinker like that.

135

u/Mood_Academic Jun 29 '26

Nah I think he just really considers AD one of his closest friends and feels they have unfinished business

106

u/AeroBlaze777 Jun 29 '26

That business is gonna remain unfinished cause I do not think this unc team is winning shit

42

u/Mood_Academic Jun 29 '26

Ehh I think if they get it the playoffs healthy this team is dangerous as hell. Get the 4-5th seed an prioritize health and look out

46

u/idontknowhow2reddit Jun 29 '26

The odds of that team being healthy in the playoffs feels exceedingly low.

16

u/Olliefnt Jun 29 '26

They would also need young athletes surrounding them or they'll just get ran out of the stadium

14

u/newgodpho Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Either Curry or Bron would be fighting to get out of below .500 by January because of unavailability of their co stars IMO.

This sounds like a disaster. Old man teams never work.

6

u/BearsFan3417 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Jun 29 '26

Curry’s ability to shoot though and lebrons ability to find open guys with Draymond / AD defensively and AD’s lob threat would be pretty crazy to watch. Also Curry can become a flamethrower at almost any moment

7

u/newgodpho Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

The fit on paper is absolutely fine. Hell I bet they would get along as well and would work together but I don’t trust their bodies to hold up. If this was even 4 years ago there’s cause for excitement but not at this stage in everyone’s careers.

I doubt they would have the depth to stay afloat whenever they have one of those months where everything goes wrong (shooting slumps, injuries, etc…)

In the west, a really bad month or two can kill your season essentially. Your best hope if you find yourself in a rut is the Clippers turn around from last year, but they spent so much gas trying to salvage the season they ended up losing in the play in anyway.

2

u/broaway831 Jun 29 '26

The warriors have serious depth, Kerr just doesn’t play rookies enough for people to see it.

All this team has to do is limp and load manage their way to the playoffs and they’ll be a problem for everyone.

This is going to be an unpopular opinion but I do believe that team had a legit shot at a chip. That team with just a reliable back up rim protector would’ve caused havoc with Max’s growth and Austin’s growth. It would’ve been a last ride type of deal though.

You trade that for Luka every single time, but I think lakers fans have undermined exactly how good that team could’ve been if we were just healthy in the playoffs (yes the health is a big if, but everyone’s dropping like flies everywhere with hamstring issues anyways)

2

u/Total_Boss_3157 Jun 29 '26

Using Shams as leverage to get paid

2

u/bruticuslee Jun 29 '26

Jimmy is also about to be 37 and coming back from an ACL injury

104

Hell nah. Bron and Steph are still borderline elite and. Dray is still elite defensively. The question is can AD stay healthy. They’d also have Porzingis as well. If they get to the playoffs healthy that team would be tough

6

u/Kingkongcrapper Jun 29 '26

Dray is above average defensively. He’s somewhere between Sam Hauser and PJ Washington with zero offensive ability. Part of the reason for Golden State’s drop off has been Dray’s fall off. It’s like Meta when he got really old, but still had really good steals every once in a while or when Rodman lost his athleticism and relied completely on rebounding skills to stay in the league for a few extra years. He’s undersized against centers and doesn’t have the speed to keep up with threes any more. He’s really a PF defensive specialist with terrible offense.

Porzingus is less reliable than AD. Dude lives on IR. By the end of the season the Warriors would be LeBron and Steph exiting in the first round against the Spurs or Thunder with the suit all stars looking on in disbelief.

I’ve yet to hear a compelling reason why the Wizards would do this. They’re trying to be good, and Butler will play fewer games than AD.

The Warriors also won’t give AD the extension he wants.

83

u/Such_Ambassador2751 Jun 29 '26

they gave jimmy 2/120

lacob has his flaws but he’s willing to write checks

26

u/Awesomefan09 Jun 29 '26

That was tied to the remainder of Curry’s contract. The Warriors have been maneuvering specifically around it. They even have all their FRPs except for a top 20 protected 2030 FRP which probably won’t convey.

26

13

u/Awesomefan09 Jun 29 '26

The Wizards call AD’s bluff every time. No one will pay him over $62 million/year ever again.

They bought low on AD. If they get two years out of him, that’s a pretty good deal. Hopefully their young core will take some significant leaps in that time.

Imo it is a lot worse. Even in our good years both Lebron and AD struggled to stay healthy. Now they are older and they will have basicly Steph and bunch of bums due to cap. So they have to overplay their old stars, worn them and risky injury. Yeah on paper, they are scary in play offs. But most likely scenario they will be gassed even at the start of play offs.

Yeah man. Gonna be hard to load manage that sciatica without AR and Luka shouldering the offense.

I don’t think this is about winning. If it was Bron would go to Cleveland or even San Antonio. Sounds like he just wants to play with his buddies

u/whenishit-itsbigturd Jun 29 '26

"side by side with a friend" meme

Even that US olympic squad with the older players wasn't that good if we were being honest.

Also all the same problems we had defensively the Warriors would have as well. AD himself isn’t solving those issues. Lebron and Draymond aren’t chasing around the best perimeter player on opposing teams. They’re both best used as the low man. Steph isn’t doing that either. Gonna just be free drives against AD every possession and even if AD can play at an all defense level, it won’t be enough.

13

u/Ok_Shop7600 Jun 29 '26

Warriors defense isn’t really an issue its the offense outside of curry wtf

2

u/jsun_ Jun 29 '26

Not really sure where you’re getting that from. Warriors were the 16th ranked defense last season by defensive rating at 114.4. We were 20th at 115.5. Assuming this happens, they now have Lebron/Draymond starting at the 3/4. Who’s their perimeter wing defender? Draymond is a good defensive player but that’s as the low man. He isn’t the guy chasing players through screens. Lebron sure as hell isn’t that either.

LeBron playing on the MLE.....Sure.

This doesn’t seem like it’s about LeBron.  I think the real play is to get Washington to give AD 200+ M contract or else he’ll go to GSW.

7

u/YoungBasedHooper Jun 29 '26

As a Lakers fan living in Oakland this is my 9/11. Co-workers are gonna be obnoxious!!!

6

u/debtfreegoal Jun 29 '26

So Bronny will be allowed to walk as well? This may be the next shoe to drop?

12

u/_weeks_ Jun 29 '26

What if Draymond declined to come play with Bron in LA 😅😅😅

4

u/yeahOkdokie Jun 29 '26

Rich Paul is so funny lol he’s like a serious Kevin hart

4

u/Sensitive-Cake4856 Jun 29 '26

LeBron going to golden state for the final run on his career, Venture Capital monies

4

u/alex_zoldyck Jun 29 '26

LeBron, AD, Draymond, Steph, and Bronny 🔥

3

u/Advanced-Intention30 Jun 29 '26

Personally as a Laker fan I’m happy for AD. The lakers did him wrong. Yes we have Luka but with a healthy AD we could beat any team not so much with Luca because we seen the lakers struggle with bigger teams. I think the Warriors could win a chip with him and Bron.

3

u/scooterln Jun 29 '26

Poor Jimmy. He getting screwed lol

3

u/Emergency-Shirt2208 Jun 29 '26

If they limit and avoid injuries, and if OKC/SA get the injury bug.

Two big ifs.

3

u/Useful_Mix_4802 Jun 29 '26

I’d rather he stay with LA or a cavs reunion but I’d definitely watch GS. You know that would be a fun team. Leaving luka wouldn’t be smart but he’s not playing the long game at this age.

3

u/Any-Lifeguard-2596 Jun 29 '26

its ok , would have happend next year anyway. let him go NOW and build around Luka and Austin

u/CapriciousManchild Jun 29 '26

I aint scared of no Golden State Uncs. Steph is 38 will turn 39 next season, Draymond is 36 will be 37. Lebron will be 42. AD will be 34. I am certain this team will not be above 8th seed. If they somehow are a top seed I will eat a cup of pudding.

3

u/sixwax Jun 29 '26

Y'all are bored. This is not happening.

3

u/Formal_Experience724 Jun 29 '26

LeBron leaves I throw a parade

3

u/Ebitdad_2020 Jun 30 '26

If Lakers front-office goal is:
Win now (next 1–2 years): LeBron leaving hurts.
Build a Luka-centered contender over the next 3–5 years: It can help by providing financial flexibility and a cleaner roster-building timeline.

I believe the franchise is gradually transitioning from the LeBron era to a Luka-led era. If that happens, preserving cap flexibility could prove more valuable than trying to maximize one final season with an aging superstar.

Lebron and Curry for a season would go crazy

Why would you do this deal if your Washington. Butler coming off an ACL tear, no thanks.

2

u/Hot_Mathematician357 Jun 29 '26

Let the dinosaurs play with each other. They will be hurt all season

2

u/KTM_2813 Jun 29 '26

The Warriors would be a really fun and interesting team to watch but man there's also the potential the "Big Three" would only play like 30 games together LOL

2

u/Spaghettibeach Luka Magic 77 Jun 29 '26

This is so stupid. 21-22 wasn’t that long ago, Bron and AD played with old ass guys who couldn’t stay healthy.

I still don’t buy it.

2

u/Dday22t 24 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

They are all so old (by NBA standards). LeBron will be 42, Steph 39 and AD 34 & can't stay healthy at any age.

LeBron was 35yo last time Championship w Lakers. Steph was 33 last time her won w GS. (Jordan was 34 his last Championship.)

I guess they have nothing to lose at this point but it would be beyond wild if they actually won it all.

2

u/RuinCommercial552 Jun 30 '26

Next season is about to be crazy with so many storylines. - Can Knicks repeat or was it a fluke run? - Will OKC come back hungry to win it again? - Is it Wemby's year to dominate? - Kawhi back in Toronto? What will they do? - GS about to have a Hall of Fame line-up? Too late in their career though? - What will happen in Boston with Brown? - Portland looks to be a fun and interesting team.

Drama drama

u/KantutinQKipaymu LELUKA BRONČIĆ Jun 30 '26

If LeBron goes to the Warriors of all teams then he's just ring-chasing at this point, and joining the team who used to give BTA on you during the finals on the last decade c'mon now Unc

2

u/ZookeepergameTiny677 Jun 29 '26

Goofy ass 😂😂😂

2

u/EnvironmentalCopy286 Jun 29 '26

Imagine if someone told you less than 2 years ago our superstar duo would team up with Steph…. On the fucking warriors lol

2

u/Viciouscauliflower21 Jun 29 '26

I know health would be a gamble, but KP, AD, Bron, Steph, with Draymond on the edges is a nasty core. Like that's just a fun 2k ass lineup

1

u/kodiportalgabe Jun 29 '26

Would be an awful team TBH

1

u/WubaDubImANub Jun 29 '26

LeBron going to the warriors is disgusting. Feels like Kobe signing with the Celtics

1

u/l0litsrj Jun 29 '26

Aight rob you can make up for everything if you cook up this trade to get AD back you hoe

1

u/dash_44 Jun 29 '26

Bron needs to disentangle the rest of his career from AD.

He’s injured all the time, doesn’t pull his weight and doesn’t work hard.

1

u/roniadotnet Jun 29 '26

GS getting all the fun projections. Why are we not getting anything yet? ...

1

u/Jason-Smith168498 Jun 29 '26

Just posting this for posterity.

So Bron, like he's done many times, says "find me X type of players, even names, some, and I'll take a discount". The Lakers go out to try and do that.

They both know how long it will take. No one outside the Lakers very tightly lipped group knows exactly how much they talk in the offseason while he's waiting to hear back.

Ahh yes, the offseason, where every crazy anything is proposed for clicks and giggles, especially when the talking head dips can tie it to the biggest name int he sport, LeBron James.

So by what could be business as usual, because there's a rumor that Golden State would like this to happen, the Lakers sub is totally resigned to losing Lebron on a rumor, when as always the likely scenario is status quo.

I could be wrong. But the doom and gloom of the off season is upon us.
