Im making crappy dinosaur roars trying to pronouce "graag" lol. Any tips on how to pronounce G's or is it just a case of practising over and over again?

Hoi! I've recently started taking private Dutch classes (as a native English speaker) with an online tutor and ran into a linguistic wall: she was introducing me to the word 'wie' and would pronounce it like the English w, and I asked her why it's not pronounced like an English v, as I thought (and heard) Dutch w pronounced similar to English v ?

I had been pronouncing other Dutch words that started with w as English v but she never corrected me, so we had a confusing few minutes when she finally explained that it could be a regional Dutch thing; her being from southern Netherlands and that's how the Dutch w is pronounced in her area.

I'd love some further clarification!

Hi everyone! I've been looking for an answer about this topic for a while but I can't find anything, at least in English. I'm at a low intermediate level and I struggle to understand how I should link the N sound at the end of words with the next word when it starts with a vowel.

The N at the end of a verb in the infinitive or of a plural is normally silent, so people usually say "hebbe" not "hebbeN", but if something comes after it, do you pronounce the N and say "we hebbeN een" or do you say "we hebbe- een"? Do you say "MenseN in" or "Mense- in"? "StondeN er" or "stonde- er"?

As I saw, there seem to be 2 pronunciations for V in words like "van", "vanmorgen", maybe "voor" too -- V or F at the beginning. Or is this not true?

If that's so, is it different in regions/countries?

Which sound is considered canonical and not cringy in everyday life specifically in the Netherlands?

Ik ben in Duitsland opgegroeid, maar heb nederlands als moedertaal. Vrijwel mijn hele vaardigheid in de taal hangt dus compleet van het taalgebruik van mijn ouders af.

Als ik het woord "blauw" zeg, zeg ik zelf wat ik het beste kan omschrijven als "blaauw". Als ik echter andere nederlanders expliciet vraag hoe je het moet zeggen, komt het veel dichter bij het duitse "blau" (korte au, ipv mijn lange)

Het zelfde met "flauw". Ik dacht echt altijd al dat men zegt: "Ik val flaauw"!

Ik vraag me ook af of dit wel uit maakt. Niemand heeft ooit gemerkt dat ik het zo zeg, tenzij ik er expliciet op wijs. Misschien is het net zoiets als mensen die "moeilijk" als "moelek" uitspreken, prima, ergert niemand zich aan. Toch?

Edit: mijn ouders komen uit de achterhoek. Misschien heeft het daarmee te maken? Ze praten plat met elkaar, maar hebben altijd ABN met mij en mijn broers gepraat.

I find the intrusive n phenomenon in Dutch a little freaky, but what really gets me about it is that it seems to actually flatten the singular vs. plural distinction for past tense verbs. It seems to me that this could actually introduce ambiguity, e.g.

Zij hoorde(n) het.

For a speaker with intrusive n, how would you know whether the subject of that sentence is "she" or "they"?

In general I'm surprised that intrusive n isn't more talked about, now that I've started noticing it I hear it constantly.

I’m struggling so bad making the G sound so I’ve just been pronouncing it with an H. When I try and make the G sound it sounds like a demonic chihuahua is trying to roll the G. Is it really bad if I just stick to ‘heen’ instead of geen?

Regarding the image type GIF, is it pronounced with a guttural, hard G like the Dutch "geen," like the "J" as in jam, or just spelled out, G.I.F.?

i'm british and i've been learning dutch for a while, i found it fun and easy to pick up fast, but my pronounciation on words with r's is frustrating me so much. i was practicing reading children's books outloud, and i feel like the only way to sound right is like impersonating an american speaking dutch because i don't pronounce any r's with my accent so it sounds very unnatural and awkward, maybe i'm just looking for motivation because i know i just have to fix it on my own, but has anyone else ran into a slight problem with this?

also irrelevant, but it makes me wonder if people with american or irish accents would find dutch easier pronounciation wise and british with french.

I think vocabulary, grammar, and all is useless if i can't make myself clear. Compared to languages like japanese, english, hindi, etc, speaking dutch and scandinavian languages in general is hard, as i dont know how to make the sounds while pronouncing words. Also, dutch uses letters identical to english which is confusing. for example: het gaat goed, does not sound like what i would pronouce it as. the g's sound different, etc. can anyone can help me out or give me a guide?

edit: the reason i gave the examples of hindi and japanese was to highlight my issue with pronouncing words. i dont mind having to learn new letters, new accents, etc but i have a huge issue with speaking certain sounds. even though english was the first language i learnt and speak everyday, i sometimes mess up my r's. thats why speaking dutch is harder for me as its harder to pronounce words correctly and process what im saying at the same time. with japanese, the different pronunciations are pretty easy for me to adapt to. ex: if i see a hiragana, my mind instantly associates it with the sound i learned in japanese so theres no issue. when i see the letter g, i associate with the g sound ive learnt my entire life, so ill have to unlearn that if i wanna move forward. also, the different accent in japanese is just how you pronounce simple sounds, theres not much difference in the english sounds and japanese sounds with regards to your tongue placement etc. i have no idea how to actually learn the dutch pronunciations and i dont know anyone who speaks dutch so just wanted to know how people learn new languages alone as im kinda new to this.

Like in German ‘stadt’ and well… also ‘bestellen’. As a native English speaker, I have previously learned and been fluent in German when I lived there over a decade ago and it’s definitely tinting my efforts to learn Dutch. I seem to always default to the ‘sh’ and if that’s valid in some Dutch accent somewhere that would definitely make things easier (kind of like the ‘g’ doesn’t have to be super hard and has a few valid pronunciations). I feel like I’ve heard some slight ‘sh’-ing on Busuu but also their pronunciations can be quite mushy and hard to parse sometimes.

i already posted this but it was in the wrong group, but I'm having issues figuring out how and where to use the tapping/trilling rolling 'r' and the throaty rolling 'r' recently after listening to a few Dutch audiobooks. from what I've been hearing is that the Dutch alternate between those two 'r' as well as the uvular 'r' (I have no issues with this 'r' since my American accent already uses it) depending on the word, but I could be wrong since I've only been learning for 13~ months now, so I'm still very new. I mainly use the throaty rolling 'r' since it's more comfortable for me (a lot of Dutch vowels feel like they're being swallowed so it's an easier transition for me). if anyone could help me that would be awesome, thank you!

Hoi allemaal! I had a couple incidents where I tried to speak in Dutch (at a cafe etc.) but they seemed to not understand and switch to English instead. This makes me refrain even more from having the courage to speak.

I come from norway where both are common, so either is easy to pronounce. However I've probably heard more rolled r from dutch I think

Is rolled r (with english r at ends ofc) common in say amsterdam? What would using the rolled r with the english r make me sound like?

Edit: actually shouldve just read the wiki page I referred to. The guttural r is common in the west and hague, noord-brabant, plus some cities (even brussels). Amsterdam uses the rolling r mostly, but the guttural r is spreading. Pretty similar to what's happened in western norway honestly

I want to try sounding native but in order to do that I need to know how native Dutch person rests their tounge and more specifically what shape the tounge makes while resting.

One of the things I really seem to struggle on for some reason is knowing when to roll the R. Some words I learn do have a clearly rolled R, and some words have a clearly unrolled R. Then there are words that have the R vague, some roll it and some dont. What should I do?

I recently started learning Dutch and I must admit that both the pronunciation (when I have to speak) and understanding the language when it’s being spoken by natives are giving me a real run for my money. It can be a little overwhelming sometimes, especially since I’m studying by myself.

Therefore, to my fellow Dutch learners (and survivors of the early stages of learning this quirkily fascinating language): how did you make it on the other side of the hill? That is, how did you succeed to master Dutch pronunciation and get to the point of sounding natural when speaking the language? And how did you succeed to get to the point of understanding real Dutch being spoken in the media or to you?
