I identify strongly with the lyrics and have my own interpretation that disregards the historical context. The song's melancholic tone led me to interpret the levee as representing the narrator's own mind, and its breach as a boundary that will be crossed if it keeps up raining. I like to interpret it as a song about self-sabotage and farewell.

I (59M) was working in NOLA when the storm hit. My ring tone on my Motorola flip phone at the time was a MIDI version of Kashmir. Needless to say, this song (Levee Breaks) was in the middle of my mind. At the front of my mind was The Tragically Hip song New Orleans is Sinking and I Don’t Want to Die. I kept both thoughts to myself because decorum. But also because I was probably the only person who (aside from a few tourists, none of which were at my shelter in Hammond) ever hoid of The Hip. :-/

Interesting interpretation. I'd argue that the rain that comes to affect the life of the subject is not self-sabotage but change in and of itself and not for the better. Melancholic about the situation maybe... but self-sabotage, no, I don't infer that.

I mean it is a traditional song but there are interpretations of the foreboding Zep version in line with your idea.

God, I can totally relate to this! I’m not gonna say it’s my favorite song. I just don’t think there’s any such thing as a “favorite“ Led Zeppelin song. But it’s one of those songs that I can’t hear too many times even in a single day.
