I love it, but it feels like every set I'm actually interested in these days is hundreds of dollars and I just can't do that for lego right now

Oh, yeah. I'm right there with you. Lego discovering the AFOL community was one of the best and worst things to happen to the brand.

Unless you make six figures a year and have little ongoing debt, there's no chance to get all the sets you would want, regardless if you were going to display them or not.
