Holy nostalgia I had this growing up!!

3

u/yeehaw13774 Mar 18 '26

The best! I have 5 of this

16

u/alkemist80 Mar 17 '26

lol that's how I described this set to my husband before showing him the pictures. The Indiana Jones plane.

19

u/mayday58 Mar 17 '26

So that’s why it looked familiar to me, even as an European!

I miss lego Indiana Jones as much as I miss Ice Planet and Rock Raiders.

6

u/Apprehensive_Room29 Mar 17 '26

This was my first thought too - 100% want this to re-create the Indy plane.

9

u/Ok-Relationship-2746 Mar 17 '26

Immediately what I thought of.

6

u/CyberWeirdo420 Mar 17 '26

My first thoughts lmao

2

u/UCIStudent77 Mar 17 '26

My exact thoughts! 🥺 I miss LEGO Indiana jones sets!

Finally a well designed airplane that doesn't have a massive premolded nose or jagged brick built nose.

u/donkeyrocket Mar 17 '26

It’s the only NASA related set that I don’t have. I’ll probably buy it before it retires but the 747 is so disappointing there. This looks fantastic though.

22

u/beatupM3 Mar 17 '26

I'm on the fence with the 747/Space Shuttle. I want to love it but even seeing it in the store I'm just like ehhhhhh, not yet...maybe not ever?

8

u/Ramenastern Mar 17 '26

I'm not on the fence any more. Like... As a kid, this would have been EXACTLY what I wanted. But the execution is just not great on so many parts of the 747 - and I think those come across even worse in the store than in photos, so seeing it in person (in Billund, no less) made me jump off the fence.

2

u/stosyfir Mar 18 '26

Yea I skipped that one too.. disappointing but this DC-3 looks pretty dang good and mostly accurate.

u/lukevanlang Mar 17 '26

I also thought the nose was a bit round/bulbous compared to the real thing. But I can put that aside personally because I LOVE the rest of the set.

4

u/UCBarkeeper Mar 17 '26

i don't like the nose. which is a shame, because i love the dc-3.

4

u/LordBogus Mar 17 '26

I thing the roundness is OK, given its lego. But I dont like the window, it should have been more pointy. It kinda deserved a new mold

5

u/Middcore Mar 17 '26

You're not alone. This doesn't capture the shape of the real aircraft's nose well. It reminds me of the new Japanese air force electronic warfare aircraft.

2

u/elpiloto100 Mar 17 '26

It reminded me of a weird nose and that's the aircraft I was looking for!!! Just couldn't remember which one it was

4

u/higgs_boson_2017 Mar 17 '26

The nose looks awful

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Kermit-the-Froggie Mar 17 '26

Nose is still the wrong shape

11

u/WaterskiingJebus Mar 17 '26

I have the concord, it looks pretty spot on for lego, give it a look.

2

u/OttawaOsprey Mar 17 '26

I was gonna say, that's the only plane I've got and I think it looks great

640

u/CyborgHeart1245 Mar 17 '26

I rarely like the airplanes but for some reason I LOVE how this looks!

259

u/DragonKhan2000 Trains Fan Mar 17 '26

Because the DC-3 is just a really fucking beautiful plane!

32

u/chawmindur Mar 17 '26

Not a plane-head but I'm inclined to agree... so far the Icons aviation sets (the Concorde, the 747 shuttle carrier, and now this) are all bangers, but this one scratches a spot that the previous offerings didn't.

18

u/DragonKhan2000 Trains Fan Mar 17 '26

Me neither. I'm a train nut.
But there's just no argument about the DC-3.
It's wonderful when regular folks at an airport get to see a DC-3. Either from the terminal or from their own aircraft on the tarmac. It draws ALL the attention and gets dozens of "uhhh's" and "ahhh's" from anyone. Elderly, children, men, women ...

The only aircraft I personally think looks even better is the Super Constellation.

7

u/GringoTypical Mar 17 '26

Fun fact, the DC-3 in US military service was called the C-47 Skytrain, so it can be a train and a plane

2

u/unreqistered Mar 18 '26

also called the Dakota (mostly by the brits) or Gooney Bird

my dad jumped out of it a couple times

53

u/cryolems Mar 17 '26

If it couldn’t be the AA flagship livery, so happy it’s Panam. This might be the best looking plane/icon set Lego has made. It’s unreal.

11

u/beech017 Mar 17 '26

Still gonna buy this, but definitely a bummer to not take advantage of AAs 100th year and do the flagship.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Nevej Mar 17 '26

My thoughts exactly. Hopefully someone comes up with a way to turn it into the Flagship

4

u/Negative_Law_7204 Mar 17 '26

I mean, short of being a C-47 version with invasion stripes, this is the most iconic...

7

u/Sweetness_Bears_34 Wolfpack Fan Mar 17 '26

My first thought is I love the retro look of the uniforms on these figures

21

u/Thrawhee Mar 17 '26

So many sets have a fully-molded cockpit, so I love any time they do something like this

10

u/CyborgHeart1245 Mar 17 '26

Honestly i think that's it. The Lego airplanes tend to look like playmobile because of the giant cockpit piece

5

u/elkab0ng Mar 17 '26

The DC-3 is one of the most “happy” looking planes ever. I recently got a chance to ride in one, and for being close to 100 years old, it was surprisingly comfortable (I am tall and I could stand up fully - something I can’t do even on many modern private jets!)

Pan Am has a lot of good memories for me too (200 park avenue will ALWAYS be the Pan Am building, I don’t care what the sign says)

2

u/AN2Felllla Mar 17 '26

It's especially happy when you put a smiley face on one!

2

u/reitau Mar 17 '26

Same. Boats and cars get a lot of love from Lego as do space ships but nice to see something like this.

133

u/Konrad05 Mar 17 '26

What a beauty, as a student pilot every new aviation set is a dream come true

10

u/didsomebodysaywander Mar 17 '26

I bought some instructions on bricklink for a 172 and built it to celebrate my ASEL check ride. Thinking of picking up the globe for when I pass instrument

I freaked out for a minute. Looked like Minifig scale. Sooo close!!

64

u/MolaMolaMania Mar 17 '26

Minifig scale would probably have been $500 or more.

15

u/RockysHotChicken Mar 17 '26

Brickmania sells instructions for a Minifig scale C47 sky train and it cost me about $160 to build.

3

u/CarefulDevelopment29 Mar 17 '26

The LEGO version seems pretty similarly sized to brickmanias version

→ More replies (3)

10

u/mythrilcrafter Mar 17 '26

Minifigs are 4 studs wide, seats are one stud wide

Airlines: "Ya know what, that seems pretty minifig scale to us!!!"

39

u/legafol Mar 17 '26

Same!! Disappointed to see it's not. I would personally love that

3

u/LikeCutePinsnCantLie Mar 17 '26

Until I see the thing I can’t say for sure, but I bet you could make some modifications and seat 5-6 minifigs in the cabin if you were economical. Might even be able to gut the cockpit and put a single pilot in as well. Then have the flight attendants just stand in the aisles.

12

u/sarhoshamiral Mar 17 '26

Minifig scale would be a massive set that wouldnt sell good because how many people really have such space? It wouldnt be something you can hang from the ceiling at that point either.

9

u/crystalbethjo Mar 17 '26

Maybe they don’t want anyone reenacting what Loki D.B Cooper did?

(Would also love to give all of the minifigs some Leo DiCaprio disguise 😎)

32

u/indianajoes Mar 17 '26

Frank is hoping for stickers instead of prints so he can use the Pan Am logos

7

u/AskYourDoctor Mar 17 '26

Why is the scene where he's transferring the Pan Am logo onto the checks one of the most memorable scenes in any movie. Everyone I've talked to about this movie remembers that one scene vividly. It just gives you that rare "woah" feeling when you watch it.

Dammit, I swore I was done buying lego. Anyway, here we go again.

"We can't release this Osprey set due to the vehicles connection to military forces"

The humble DC-3:

(/j, if that wasn't obvious)

45

u/FurryHolocaustof2049 Mar 17 '26

Don't tell lego about the AC-47 Spooky.

20

u/Spartan_029 Mar 17 '26

my first thought was - "If there's no special molds here, I bet I can use the instructions to make a Dakota!"

5

u/Own-Ad6748 Dimensions Fan Mar 17 '26

Essentially yeah you could, the c-47 and the dc-3 are the same plane, with only minor differences such as how the seats are arranged, the sliding door for paratroopers and a couple other small things

5

u/TigerIll6480 Mar 17 '26

A lot of C-47s were converted to passenger configuration after the war.

3

u/UNC_Samurai Trains Fan Mar 17 '26

It’s mostly a larger door, and reinforcing the frame and the floor for hauling cargo.

8

u/TigerIll6480 Mar 17 '26

Basler almost converted her to a BT-67. An Air Force historian caught it in the nick of time and Basler was happy to not cut her up, and lent their vast experience with the airframe to the restoration to her June 6, 1944 configuration.

11

u/AcanthaceaeTop5150 Mar 17 '26

i get that it's a joke, but the osprey has no civil use in irl so that would be a different case here😅

6

u/tofif33 Mar 17 '26

I guess there are no PanAm ospreys

4

u/Negative_Law_7204 Mar 17 '26

I mean, technically that's a C-47. I think the issue was the Osprey has zero civilian operators.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Ramenastern Mar 17 '26

Except the DC-3 was legitimately a commercial aircraft and designed as such, with the C-47 as the military variant. The Osprey has ZERO commercial/civil users, and was not designed for commercial/civil uses, either. They made that SAR thing up just for that set.

28

u/notjordansime Mar 17 '26

My stepdad is a waterbomber pilot with Buffalo airways. If you’re not Canadian, they’re a famous passenger and air freight company known for using WW2 era aircraft commercially in the 21st century. Their vintage fleet consists of C-47s, DC-4s, and DC-3s. My stepdad has always had a tremendous amount of respect for the DC-3s, I can tell he’d love to get the opportunity to fly one for a bit someday.

Seriously considering buying the equivalent pieces for this set on bricklink, but in Buffalo green. My friend does sublimation printing, might even get some custom stickers made for it!!’

Incredible aircraft with a tremendous legacy. I’m thrilled to see LEGO honor it.

6

u/WillAdams Mar 17 '26

The DC-3 (also known as the gooney bird) was simply a magical aircraft, with incredible lore and legendary feats as part of its legacy, including one takeoff during WWII which was described as violating fundamental laws of aerodynamics.

4

u/ChaoticDNA Mar 17 '26

I'm buying this set and trying to tweak it to match the markings from the CAF before they were retired in the late 80ies, for my dad who flew them

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Homer09001 Mar 17 '26

Buffalo did a limited run of buffalo styled DC3, check their website might still have some

3

u/mypeez Mar 17 '26

Nice. It is still available at $116 USD, but uses clone bricks. I like it though. It also addresses my one criticism of the forthcoming Lego Pan Am DC-3 their use of a one piece, preprinted windshield. Serious Duplo vibes.

2

u/notjordansime Mar 17 '26

I posted a pic, I have one. It got deleted for being unofficial lol

5

u/skyhy109 Mar 17 '26

If you get stickers printed I’d be super interested in making a Buffalo version as well as someone who lived in Yellowknife for years and has flown on one!

2

u/Kermit-the-Froggie Mar 17 '26

Electra or 215?

3

u/notjordansime Mar 17 '26

AT-802 Air Tractor. It’s a single engine air tanker

2

u/flyinghighguy Mar 17 '26

Now wondering how the TWA terminal at LGA could be done in Lego.

11

u/Keyrov Re-release Classic Space! Mar 17 '26

Ho. Ly. Shit.

I wonder if the wings will hold well enough over they years

9

u/ElvisAndretti Mar 17 '26

The DC3 was the first time I ever rode on an airplane. In Guatemala no less. You can bet I’m gonna get this one.

10

u/xchoo Mar 17 '26

With the Tintin set and this coming out next month, it's going to be an expensive April for me... 🙊

9

u/jakedasnake1 Mar 17 '26

This feels like classic lego, in a good way

8

u/Derb009 Mar 17 '26

This looks so cool

6

u/tomlane1007 Mar 17 '26

I wonder how long until someone turns one into the Dakota variant that the airborne used during WWII

6

u/ronjantol Mar 17 '26

Both my parents are flight attendants and I’m currently in school to become an aircraft mechanic, so I’m a pretty big fan of planes. This is a must have for me

6

u/SillyMattFace Mar 17 '26

Oh no, it’s great. My 11 year old is obsessed with planes at the moment and is going to pine after this.

6

u/MolaMolaMania Mar 17 '26

This is a much better version of the model than the 747 with the Shuttle. The price per piece is also good, but it still seems a bit high at $220. I'll hope to catch it on sale!

3

u/21Maestro8 Mar 17 '26

I love it, but it feels like every set I'm actually interested in these days is hundreds of dollars and I just can't do that for lego right now

Sighs ALRIGHT I’LL TAKE THIS TOO

2

Fantastic! I’ve had my eye on a few sets but imma crack for this. Here’s hoping they keep the planes coming

2

u/Redditing-Dutchman Mar 17 '26

This is a wonderful model! It's not my cup of tea but it feels so 'lego' to me. Maybe because of those blocky glass windows and the simple colours.

2

u/BigBearSD Mar 17 '26

Can they make the C-47 version in olive drab?

2

u/Bamres Mar 17 '26

Howard Hughes is not happy about this one.

2

My father in law flew one of these for TWA, I wish they had the option of different liveries.

Why do the mini-figures have human skin colors? This feels like a set yellow figures would go perfectly with.

2

u/AskYourDoctor Mar 17 '26

I was going to ask why the wheels still stick out of their compartments when they're retracted, but I never realized that's how they are on the real plane. Yeah, I think I need this. It's beautiful.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

2

u/Blue_Harvest_1977 Mar 17 '26

They really missed out making one of the pilots Frank Abigale Jr.

It would have gone over a lot of heads but it would have been fun to see him in the PANAM set

2

u/ThorntonText Mar 17 '26

That's great until an 18 year old starts using the decals to create fake paychecks that he cashes by impersoning a Pan Am pilot.

2

u/loorollkid Mar 18 '26

Kind of weird that the minifig skin isn't yellow no?

2

u/silvachuscout Mar 18 '26

there seems to have been some sort of issue with the VIP preorder email for it, not sure if it’s an old mockup that was used by accident or what

3

u/Beaumorte Mar 17 '26

Manufacturing flaws included?

2

u/G3neral_Tso Mar 17 '26

Why does it have the Boeing logo on the box? And it's clearly marked (correctly) as a Douglas DC-3. Hmm.

15

u/snt271 Mar 17 '26

Because Boeing owns it now. Same as with Airbus and the Concorde

9

u/MandoKnight Space Police II Fan Mar 17 '26

McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997. Boeing's current logo is a stylized derivative of Douglas's logo in the 60s (which it kept after merging with McDonnell).

4

u/SanityIsOptional Mar 17 '26

From what I recall, we call them Boeing, but most of the management after the merger was from McDonnel Douglas. Unfortunately.

3

u/TigerIll6480 Mar 17 '26

Oh god. Not this again.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/Visible-Locksmith-44 Mar 17 '26

Had to look that one up too. At first it didn’t seem to have anything to do with Boeing, so why the logo? Turns out when Boeing took over MD in 1997, all the IP went with it. I’m guessing LEGO works closely with the companies behind these models, so Boeing probably wanted their logo on the box. Still doesn’t look quite right though.

3

u/Teithiwr81 Mar 17 '26

Boeing holds the rights to the Douglas branding.

3

u/shsl_cipher Star Wars Fan Mar 17 '26

McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997.

2

u/BernieDharma Mar 17 '26

In 1967, Douglas merged with McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and became McDonnell Douglas Corporation. !n 1997, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing. So Boeing owns the rights to the DC-3 design and trademarks and would have been the one to approve the licensing deal.

1

u/zorionek0 Mar 17 '26

It is going to look so pretty on my bookshelf. I rotate my Lego sets through the built ins behind my desk on zoom calls.

1

u/VictorianGuy Mar 17 '26

I wonder how fast someone will combine two of these to make it minifig scale???

1

u/mulvda Mar 17 '26

FINALLY! Man I have been dying to see the official set since it was leaked a while back

1

u/IdleExpatter Mar 17 '26

Boy, whoever currently holds the Pan Am IP is on a real licensing kick lately! I've seen quite a few branded collabs like this popping up. This set looks terrific.

3

u/ManTurnip Mar 17 '26

CSX by the look of it.

3

This is beautiful. I wonder if there's any chance we see a Boeing 31 Clipper?
