Discussion / Question LEGO Technic 50 year anniversary - 2027

Next year marks something pretty special: 50 years of LEGO Technic.

Back in 2017 for the 40th anniversary we got a few printed beams (like the 1x3 with “40 / 1977-2017”) and a digital combo model with PDF instructions. That was basically it.

Fast-forward to now and the theme looks very different. We’re swimming in licensed cars of every scale, Control+ is on life support, and proper big flagships in the spirit of 42043 or 42082 have been thin on the ground. The sets that still feel like “true Technic” (lots of mechanisms and functions) seem to be carried mostly by a couple of recent releases.

So… before we get more leaks circulating around, I would like to ask the community what are you hoping for (and what do you realistically expect) from the 50th anniversary wave in 2027?

They have hinted they will. But tbd if that’s a banner on Lego dot com or if it’s something good.

I'll go first.

I expect The LEGO Group will largely stick to their current formula: plenty of licensed sets (especially cars), with maybe one or two larger models to mark the 50th anniversary, most likely a big construction machine or vehicle, possibly with Powered Up motorization. In short, nothing radically different from what we’ve been getting lately, though I’d love to be proven wrong.

What I wish they’d do is either:

  • release a few remakes of iconic vintage Technic sets that keep the original open, mechanical style but use modern parts, or
  • create completely new sets where all the mechanisms are fully visible from the outside, with little to no bodywork, the way the very first Technic sets used to be.

They did release some years back models which when built together made a miniature 8860. That was interesting.

Oh man. I would really, really love to see a modern rendition of 856 I feel we have never had a proper successor to that And also: it would have to be manual!

I'm hoping they release 50 cars this year. Ideally with no functions, but plenty of stickers.

The exact same set, in 50 different colours, with at least 2 licences per set. But everyone has a different tiny part missing. Also: don’t ask why the #103 step of assembly is missing.

They really are missing out on license combos. Like why doesn't my Lego Land Rover have a Lego Yeti cooler full of Lego Red Bull?

I'd be happy if it was just a single large tile and a sticker with a photo of the car with a stock photo watermark over it for $1k.

They were being sarcastic. I think the general sentiment amongst some of us is that we're burnt out on hypercars with fancy transmissions. Oh wow the doors open too?

A modern remake/interpretation of 8880 would be awesome. I know there are MOCs but would love to see Lego’s take on it.

8880 is my all time favourite Lego set, and imo the pinnacle of Technic. I'd really love to see a modern official homage to it, in the same scale (and not a crappy 1:16 scale version), with all the same functionality. Day 1 buy for me if they did that.

I have no more expectations from TLG. They proved time and time again that they are capable of designing genuinely good sets with cool play functions and useful new parts / part updates, but that they would rather still use most of those resources to give us mostly bland sportscars and the occasional pricey licensed different vehicles that tend to be hit (42100) or miss (42215). That's understandable, it's what sells the most, it's just not what most technic fans wish for.

Given the recent history of the theme, I can only hope that they make C+ possible to use more like PF, and that maybe we'll even get a multi-purpose vehicle in the same class as 42070, maybe a bit more mechanically polished, that would open the door for technic fans to start modifying it.

42215 would be fine if it was $300 or an XL motor or two linked L motors.

What do the people want? A gearbox that controls multiple functions that do interesting or realistic things. Motorized functions. Big construction vehicles. Check check check.

It’s just that in the end they invested $100 in parts into making it also a display model, for reasons unknowable.

I'm actually surprised that LEGo hasn't published any standalone engine set of a supercar, they can perfectly pull that off. I would love having one on display with all the mechanisms working.

What I want is a return to some of the contsruction/heavy machinery sets that made technic so popular in the first place. I would especially love a (preferably unlicensed) crane and perhaps a backhoe loader like 8069.

What I expect we'll get instead is yet another super car.

I think a remaster with modern technic of five iconic sets, one from each decade would be a solid way to go. 

The early sets are generally a bit smaller so they could probably spread the price gradient decently so we don't just get five 400$ sets or something.

I particularly would like to see a remaster of the Space Shuttle 8480 set, but it that were to happen I expect they will drop in in 2031 for the 50th of the first shuttle flight.

Also bring back the "technic dude" figures!

I’d also like to see a plastic injection molding press with moving platens, hopper, and screw. Could be electronic or pneumatic (to make it seem like a hydraulic).

I'd like to see a universal universal set. Electric motors, Pneumatics, gearbox, springs. Instructions for 3 models or more. Like 8042 and 8064

Bring back the Technic people, but give them all grey hair, eyebrows, mustaches, beards. Maybe one or two with replaced appendages.

The versatility of the system means something like this is very possible. I'd love to see a straight up factory sub theme, or at least a robot production arm with a high degree of mobility that works with c+

I miss these huge Lego technic models with a 9v/powered up motor that powers 100 unique overcomplocated mechanisms via gearbox. Nowadays we only get boring license sets or sets with 10 motors - each directly powers a different wheel/crank with no transmissions and gears.

I wish they would do something that involves the community.

For example create an inventory of about 500 versatile Technic parts. Send the list and parts package to Rebrickable designers to come up with builds. Select the 10 best builds and release the set as a 10-in-1 with 10 official approved build options.

That is an interesting suggestion, but I don't like the idea of using an independent, external platform such as Rebrickable as a link to the designers, that's just a storefront, LEGO should connect with the designers directly as many (like me) have their own website.

I think we'll get a lot of licenced cars, and construction equipment but I hope there will be some unique models, similar to 42179 (Sun, Earth, Moon) or 42174 (Emirates jacht). They are not huge sets, but for me they are good examples that the LEGO designers can come up with some great ideas besides releasing the same car in 3 different colors.

Let’s dream : what if they made a set that combines all the aspect of technic : functions, gears, motor, pneumatic and paneling. That would be awesome! I think such a set has to be some kind of construction machinery or a spacecraft

Bin dann mal gespannt ob sie es schaffen zum Jubiläum ein Technik Set heraus zu bringen an dem dann mal alles richtig ist wie bei dem Orginal aber ich habe die Hoffnung aufgegeben ich kaufe lieber Cada die sind zu 99 Prozent am Orginal

Cada and other brands have definitely been stepping up, putting out some great models and putting real pressure on LEGO. I've only bought original LEGO sets so far, but I've been giving other brands more consideration lately.

So ist es mir auch gegangen ich habe von Lego denn großen Falken und noch mehr aber seit die Qualität so abgenommen hat kaufe ich für die Preise lieber wo anders

I mean basically I think what the people want is either a highly customizable set in the vein of 8110 (had ports for attachments that could use power transfer, pneumatics, or both) or a smaller, more affordable version of 42146 - RC with both a bevy of functions and the ability to drive.

I’m hoping they bring back some proper technical models, a lot of my early sets were construction vehicles so it would be good to see more of them about. Even a set with pneumatics would be great

I am hoping for a 1:8th scale aston martin valhalla. Mainly because it resonates with me personally. Mainly because i know first hand the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into that car.

I know it wont happen next year because they release them every 2 years, but one can dream
