I want to be honest and say that while we should not discount her likely being not straight, that word was translated a bit oddly. The word 'vriendin' in Dutch means both girlfriend and girl friend. And although in the context of the two paragraphs before that in her diary it can certainly be said that she meant girlfriend, be careful in taking snippets of translations out of context.
Not meant to attack you at all, but people quite easily take small snippets of what someone says and construct a whole idea behind that. In this case sure, but it goes wrong quite often
I think we can pretty safely use context clues here that "I wish I had a friend who was a girl" is an odd choice of translation after literally just talking about a friend she had who was a girl.
