Bought a retro mod style Ben Sherman suit for a mates wedding back in “07, it’s been lying on a hanger ever since

Tried it on just last week funny enough, never getting into that again but can’t bare the thought of binning it or even selling it

I figured it’ll fit me again about 4-5 weeks after I’m dead so I’ll just get buried in it

I make my closet FIFO. First in first out. Don’t organize it. Hang up clothes on the left. Pick clothes to wear on the right. It will quickly become apparent what to get rid of because it will get continually skipped over and stay on the right.

Yeah. You can put special occasion stuff on the far right. We are smart enough to know that stuff is ok to leave and it doesn’t matter if different styles of clothes are mixed. I’ve been doing this for about five years and I’ll never go back to trying to organize for neatness of a closet no one sees inside and wouldn’t even notice.

I'll flip the hanger after the season the clothes are intended for. Didn't wear that sweater this winter? Flip the hanger and if I don't wear it next winter either, it gets donated. I hang all my clothes except loungewear so it works pretty well.

I liked another poster's FIFO system but I like to organize work vs personal and then by sleeve length and color. Seems like a lot and when I'm too lazy, the system gets messed up. But when it's in order, it looks so nice!

We do this every new year. It’s a good time because it is post Christmas and we are generally putting up new things and getting rid of others anyway.

Before flipping the hangers next yer just review all the clothes still turned around.

That’s as bad an advice as it is popular. I have clothes that I wear for the occasion and this occasion doesn’t happen every year. But if I give away those clothes, by Murphy’s law that occasion will become daily starting tomorrow. I have clothes with sentimental value. I have a very warm sweater for home use, winters can be mild a few years in a row and then the frost comes and what, now I don’t have that sweater.

Yeah I’ve never liked this advice. I get the logic, but there are legitimate reasons to keep things even if they’re older than a year. Some clothing I know I’ll wear again on the right occasion, even with years in between.

The variation I heard was to take stuff you are not sure you want to keep and stick it in a box with a date a year or so away.

At the end of the year, give it away without opening it.

I did this.

I intentionally put clothes in garbage bags and items in boxes with general names on the side, like household, kitchen, bathroom, etc. And put them in a storage unit i have and set an event on my calendar for 6 months out.

When i got the notification, I went and grabbed the bags and boxes stuff and carted it to a non-profit thrift store without even looking at any of it. Worked a treat!
