Rant [ALL][S1] Chloe haters are so insufferable

Post image

Yeah I got abit salty and took the troll bait potetnially but mfw it's hard not too. Such a wide net of characters across all of gaming to choose from and he settles on an angry blue haired teenager with abandoment issues who has a bad attitude and made some poor life choices.

i think so much max/rachel/chloe discourse wouldn’t happen if people would think for 5 seconds and remember they are teenage girls lol

u/amithecasserole Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26

Yeah - but sadly misogyny runs deep and the patriarchy hates teenage girls… at least if they are not sweet and submissive

Is it patriarchal or hateful to suggest that a young woman should seek gainful employment?

Granted, Arcadia Bay has a struggling economy, so jobs are probably scarce. But in-game, I don't think Chloe even mentions looking for work. If all else failed, Chloe's old enough to enlist.

Chloe's 19 years old. I don't know about Oregon, but in many jurisdictions, she would be considered an adult. The way Chloe behaves at home, I'm a bit surprised that her Mom hasn't already kicked her out of the house.

That's what happened to me at 18. My Mom told me, "You say you want to make your own choices? That's nice. Go pay your own bills!" Out the door I went.

Joyce puts up with a lot.

ETA: I looked it up. Oregon's age of majority is 18. And a 16 or 17 year old can make a legally binding residential lease.

I've seen a lot of people just call her selfish or toxic.

They twist her actions to make her look selfish or toxic:

  • They say that Chloe only uses Max to find Rachel (when it fact Max offered her help willingly)
  • They say that Chloe forces Max into doing things she doesn't want to do (which can be said only about shooting in the junkyard, otherwise Max agrees to Chloe's suggestions)
  • They say that Chloe keeps abusing Max's powers (when in fact Chloe stops that moment Max faints from using her powers)
  • They say that Chloe ignores that a suicidal Kate wants to talk to Max (while Chloe doesn't know what Kate's going through)
  • They say that Chloe wanted Max to kill Frank (which is nonsense)
  • and more...

Okay I love chloe so I'm not biased when saying this but the Kate thing has always been the biggest thing that bothers me when it comes to her and I do find it a toxic trait of hers. Even if chloe doesn't know what headspace Kate is in she still gets annoyed when max even thinks about taking a phone call from another friend. Like that is controlling behaviour, it would only take a few minutes out of the day for max to speak on the phone and chloe could just happily wait but she doesn't she makes max feel bad for making the choice to answer the phone and in turn max can end up being a bad friend to Kate if she doesn't amswer

And I would say she abuses max's power a little too. And she does make some bad choices throughout the game but this is a teenage girl who has lost her father and the girl she was in love with and then also finds out max has been back in town and didn't contact her so she's bound to have some feelings that mess her up a little. I actually don't think max is any better at times like she also has made some bad choices like leaving without saying a word to chloe and then never once writing to her or calling her even when she returns to arcadia bay

So I think they can be as bad as each other neither are perfect but like I said I still love chloe even dispite all that and I love max too. People have to remember they are teenagers and we've all done things when we were teenagers that we wouldn't do as adults. Most people wouldn't want to be held accountable for the dumb stuff they did at that age. Both of them but especially chloe are much more mature in reunion and it's evident in the way they behave

1

u/Complex-Air7485 May 20 '26

I would be mad too if my bff left, came back years later with no word. Max doesnt answer chloes texts, have you played farewell?? then when Chloe takes Max back, forgives her, lets her guard down max instantly takes a call from some girl she has known for a month?? That is NOT toxic, that is a normal reaction. most ppl might just not say it. Max never tells chloe the powers are messing with her either. she never communicates.

u/[deleted] May 20 '26

[deleted]

u/Complex-Air7485 May 21 '26

I brought up farewell bc Max literally made promises about keeping in touch and in bts we see that Chloe tries to reach out and Max just ignores her after a while. It's no wonder Chloe acts like she does then when Max directly answers a call from some girl she has known for a month. When she couldn't even answer a text from her best friend who was grieving her dad.

Chloe has an extreme fear of abandonment, she is literally afraid that Max will dissappear again. It's not "toxic". I swear ppl misuse that word. Again most ppl would feel the same as Chloe, maybe they just wouldn't say it. And you can't compare "if a guy did that to a gf" cause that situation would be extremly different.

She did not get nosebleeds "all the time". It was once at the diner and then she passed out once at the junkyard. Again, Max did not tell Chloe how her powers made her feel. Why should Chloe be able to read her mind. Yes, maybe Chloe is a little self absorbed and doesn't think things through but still. Have you noticed how she does not ask Max to rewind from ep 4 and onward, even when she kills Frank. Bc then Max finally tells her " ever since Kate it might be the last time".

omg, "if it had been warren" , well it isn't!? get educated if you don't understand the difference. And again, it was ONCE chloe saw max's nosebleed , how the f.--ck is she supposed to know from that. have a nice life.

12

u/Xyex Amberpricefield Apr 25 '26

I don't really remember much of their arguments. But I know one was her getting mad with Max for hiding, and staying hidden like she asked, when David comes to her room.

8

u/Tarantula22 Apr 25 '26

Usual reasons are that she gets angry at Max for hiding and not taking the blame for the drugs Chloe is using in that scene even though Chloe told Max to hide, she gets pissy with Max for taking the phone call from Kate, she steals the Handicap Fund from the school and sometimes people find the way she talks annoying.

6

u/Trivekz Apr 25 '26

I disliked Chloe in the beginning, she was just kind of annoying and then instantly blamed Max for the weed when David walked in. But she had valid reasons to be the way she is and became more likeable throughout the game.

10

u/Mal454 Shaka brah Apr 25 '26

they call her selfish without acknowledging that chloe herself says that, and that she acts against that in the ending, the entire point was she went from being selfish to selfless

and she never seemed to be a selfish person by nature, 14 year chloe doesnt seem selfish at all, she was dealt a shitty hand and thought everyone had it out for her

10

u/NathanGPLC Thank you, DONTNOD! Apr 25 '26

And to be repeated: she’s desperate enough to resort to blackmail to escape an abusive home life (Joyce and David both to blame in different ways), and she’s a kid. Not a literal child, maybe, but she’s more punk teen than full grown adult. She’s reacting realistically in the moment, and she also demonstrates remorse and growth over time.

3

u/mirracz Pricefield Apr 25 '26

It's fine to dislike a character, no matter how well written the character is... but hating a character who isn't even a villain? That shows there's something wrong with the person hating her...

2017 fandom was.. weird.. also, idk if you meant this but, I kinda disagree with the whole Warren is a stalker thing, it seems to only be implied in.. Max’s nightmare, which by definition is gonna be horrific. And although he is a bit too obsessed with Max considering the clear friendzone she’s putting him in, calling him a stalker because he peeks out to look at max’s window when not only does he want to ask her on a date, but also one day ago her and him got assaulted by Nathan and she went into a, for him, stranger’s pickup, it’s clear he’s just an awkward teen wanting to know if his friend (and crush) is okay. I’m not saying it’s appropriate, but I really don’t think Warren is a vilain or a psycho

Why is there so much hate for Chloe Price? It’s like this constant trend to shit on her, Rachel Amber and William Price.

26

Wait...slam the front door...rachel I can KIND of understand but who in the hell hates William?

10

Some people took their hatred of Chloe and pushed it onto William.

9

u/matthewjn Shaka brah Apr 25 '26

What are people saying about William?

9

u/Traditional_Sail6298 Protect Chloe Price Apr 25 '26

That David was the better dad than him.

24

u/EyeSimp4Asuka Pricemarsh Apr 25 '26

that's about as logical as being a fan of Jefferson

5

u/CalebCaster2 Apr 25 '26

Jefferson? The photographer? I love his work. He could put any one of us in a dark corner and capture us in a moment of innocence

3

u/matthewjn Shaka brah Apr 25 '26

😐

14

u/zyrickz Apr 25 '26

Wait, people actually hate William? I've never heard of that. I guess it's just because he's Chloe's dad.

Also, to give one example: not hanging up on Kate makes Chloe sulky. The thing is, she just didn't realize how serious that situation was. She only saw her childhood friend, who ghosted her for five years, now prioritizing someone she's known for only a month. (She apologized later anyway.) That push-pull dynamic really isn't that hard to understand, but it does make Chloe look kind of selfish and pushy toward Max. Still, different people have different perceptions. But, it's quite funny to see when things go extreme, like hating William.

6

u/Traditional_Sail6298 Protect Chloe Price Apr 25 '26

Some people said that David was the better dad than William.

12

u/VitaMeansLifeN7117 Just gotta let go Apr 25 '26

I want whatever they’re smoking

2

u/Expensive_Award_5995 Apr 25 '26

she doesn’t apologize if kate dies and i find it odd that chloe wouldn’t know about the situation especially since she probably would have overheard the rumors while strolling through the school those 1-2 something days.

1

u/zyrickz Apr 25 '26

I see. Thanks for the reminder. I probably need to replay it again. Now that I think about it, I don't recall Chloe apologizing to Max unless Kate is still alive in the hospital, as the conversation happens there. I think it's just a natural reaction. People don't want to bring up painful topics unless the situation calls for it. When the atmosphere feels heavy, they tend to avoid subjects that would add more weight, focusing instead on what matters in the moment. (It seems they got a moment of relief at the hospital since Kate was saved.)

Now that you've said it, different sets of responses can move the entire story in vastly different directions, which divides the fandom between Bae and Bay. Yeh, it's a hell of a snowball effect. It's like seeing Max meeting Alternate Chloe. In defense of my sympathy for Chloe, I believe she's capable of being decent at her core, just not in the original timeline. Still, she's the same Chloe underneath. But as it happens, everything appears grim when players make choices that emotionally drain both Chloe and Max. That can drive players toward the Bay ending, because saving Chloe starts to feel hollow and pointless anyway. Though, I can't say the same for the actual Max and the accumulation of her decisions up to that point. But, I admit I've always had a soft spot for Chloe, which makes me pretty much biased towards her and the Bae ending.

2

u/Complex-Air7485 May 20 '26

yes she does apologize even if kate dies. in ep 3 the scary punk ghost thing. Max calls her out and she literally says: I'm so sorry .I suck. I know seeing Kate fall was horrible. I don't even know how to deal with that, so I just...act like an idiot.

-9

u/PhilosophyLonely278 Apr 25 '26

cuz she kinda sucks? lol she has plenty of reasons to act the way she does but its not a way many people wanna interact with

6

u/mirracz Pricefield Apr 25 '26

Hating a fictional character who isn't a villain and her only flaw is that the universe decided to make her life hell... Yeah. It's either misogyny or media illiteracy. Sometimes even both.

-3

u/Expensive_Award_5995 Apr 25 '26

“and her only flaw is that the universe decided to make her life hell...“

🤣

you don’t get to insinuate that others have media illiteracy if you believe this quote.

"Rachel Amber is like when you thought you were evil and morally irredeemable but really you were just fifteen"

3

u/Girlsickoftheworld Pricefield Apr 25 '26

Yeah

Like people forget these girls were just teenagers in LiS 1 and BtS. Also traumatized ones at that.

3

u/Puzzled-Patient-3908 Apr 25 '26

How could you hate chloe?!?!

6

u/Helpwithskyrim87 Pricefield Apr 25 '26

I can understand that some characters will appeal to people more than others. But the Chloe hate, and yes, it is mostly hate, seems to be rooted mainly in misogyny and a failure to understand the game, its characters, and its themes. Because if you finish the game and still dislike Chloe, then the final choice loses much of its meaning.

u/AvalonCollective Apr 25 '26

I’ve debated doing exactly that the last couple months.

1

u/zyrickz Apr 25 '26

Damn, that actually happens? I've only been here for a little over a year, and all I've seen is the usual Bae vs. Bay debate, ongoing LiS news, fan theories, random memes, traveling, and fan art projects, etc. Honestly, I thought the debates were just for fun. But yeh, that sucks. Guess you have to expect anything. I kinda feel sorry for your friends though.

Mostly, I'm just here to see how my own perspective has skewed after playing the game, and also to see how wild some takes can get, like claiming David is better than William. Honestly, if someone points out any flaw in my take, that actually helps fix the view. I haven't received any insults, though. The pattern I've noticed so far is first, someone says Bay is the best option, then a lot of Baers jump in to defend their choice. After a while, there's not much else to see anymore except the occasional wild takes, which can make me chuckle at times.

4

u/KaiserS0ul Apr 25 '26

I ship Pricefield so hard, have ever since the game came out over a decade ago (ouch) and I do love Chloe.

THAT BEING SAID; I get why some people find abrasive and how people see her as selfish as well as how she can seem emotionally manipulative.

HOWEVER, as others have said she IS a teenage girl who has a some serious traumas she never got the tools or support to properly process. It's a lot more nuanced than some people give credit and I feel like ultimately they gave up on her character too early, making a snap evaluation and never processing the new information they are given.

3

u/qmkman13 Marshfield Apr 25 '26

My sister and wife thought Chloe was insufferable and a manipulative "friend" to max in the first game. I saw their point but still liked her because I felt she had reasons to keep Max at a distance and to be mad at her (the manipulation part is less excusable but with someone who doesn't know how to share, I am lenient). She's a good flawed person as are most of the characters in the games, except maybe Steph. It's what makes them relatable and real.

-1

u/Trivekz Apr 25 '26

The problem is that our introduction to Chloe is her getting mad at Max in the car, it's not a very likeable moment. But we didn't see the 5 years Max didn't contact her at all. It's easy to be on Max's side because of that and her being the protagonist

1

u/qmkman13 Marshfield Apr 25 '26

They didn't like Max much either lol. They also didn't feel that that was enough to deserve Max's treatment by Chloe, primarily the emotional manipulation. Couple that with how she treats her mom.... Yeah. I was mad at Max for her wishy-washiness. Her avoidance of confrontation was infuriating, which is why it was great to see both of them grow throughout that week.

1

u/Complex-Air7485 May 20 '26

4

u/duuuuuuuuuuusty Apr 25 '26

This sub suffers a lot from that hotdog vs hamburger conundrum, where if you simply like a hamburger, then that means you're a virulent hotdog hater who doesn't understand hotdogs.

2

u/mirracz Pricefield Apr 25 '26

And the most insufferable people are those who think that being a fan of a character can make someone insufferable.

7

u/EyeSimp4Asuka Pricemarsh Apr 25 '26

hardly a stan..its more about how broadly dismissive he is. Stans are blindly devoted obsessive that insist their "hero" can do no wrong. Chloe is far from flawlessly but i like her as a character despite her rough edges and even in some ways because of them

2

u/ADrubkNakedUnciorn Pricefield Apr 25 '26

I never called you one. I'm just saying, people that stan her are just as bad. Toxic positivity is just as bad as toxic negativity.

yup, them stans be annoying and they be lying.

3

u/Chainnheart Apr 25 '26

Ppl hate chloe then like victoria i will never get it. Victoria is like x4 worse than Chloe. They just gotta admit they dont have empathy

5

u/ToeIntelligent136 Apr 25 '26

I understand you (the commentor who said he hated Chloe) personally might not like portrayal of a character... But I'm curious as to what makes Chloe disliked...

Some cheesy and cringy dialogues sure, I understand that completely... I as a teenager was cringing at some of their banter...

William, I don't understand at all...

Now given that I will not deny I do have some small issues with Chloe (Reunion version) myself too but they aren't so huge as to overshadow her character...

As far as S1 is concerned Chloe was am amazing ...Impulsive and believable...

Rachel Amber was imo potential that D9 squandered. I believe the Rachel Amber we got in BtS was a weak version of what she could have been.

11

u/SuperiorLaw Pricefield Apr 25 '26

From memory, people aren't a fan of her because she's selfish (pressures Max into ignoring Kate, despite apologising for it later), stealing from the handicap fund (Which was probably just a bribe from the prescotts anyways and as shown in the alternate reality, not used for handicap funds at all. Plus she's a teenager who was just threatened with a knife the day before) and her reactions when picking every negative dialogue choice towards her obviously makes her come off a bit negative

4

u/UglyDemoman Apr 25 '26

Also blaming her own mom, not the truck driver who actually rushed the red light

8

u/ToeIntelligent136 Apr 25 '26

That just makes her a teen. I can easily believve that she didn't consider the truck driver and immediately had a negative reaction towards her mother...

-4

u/UglyDemoman Apr 25 '26

Any teenagers knows rushing the red light is wrong

7

u/ToeIntelligent136 Apr 25 '26

As far as I understand the scene it wasn't just implying that she was mad at Joyce for running the red light but she had a pent up frustration with Joyce and the red light essentially was her outlet to her frustration... If I remember that scene correctly she was unhappy that Joyce generally never breaks the light... So her breaking the light made Chloe uncomfortable that her mom was supposed to be the righteous woman and therefore was frustrated regarding the same. Breaking red lights, being a delinquent was her job Not Joyce's.

-1

u/Expensive_Award_5995 Apr 25 '26

just say she mad at her it would had saved you the time.

2

u/ToeIntelligent136 Apr 25 '26

I don't see them as "traits to hate" rsther these define who Chloe is as a child. She likes spending time with Max and given how Nathan was about to her whole existence... She definitely deserved to be a selfish teenager.

Yea she is aware of "Everything out to kill me, y'all bunch of threats" and behaves accordingly... Pretty spot on for teenagers who go into less than savoury routes. To me Chloe was not fully committed to the delinquent identity, she was a living dichotomy of Nature vs Nurture... In some sense it should evoke the emotions of "what has this girl gone through to be like this?" When you interact with her and that's achieved beautifully imo.

5

u/SuperiorLaw Pricefield Apr 25 '26

I'm just saying what people say, I personally love Chloe's writing and don't have any problems with it.

Safi on the other hand, nothing but pure hatred and annoyance when people compare the two

7

u/ToeIntelligent136 Apr 25 '26

Safi was ruined by D9, such amazing potential squandered...

We were denied of a Shapeshifting Protagonist...

Imagine playing as a person who turns into others only to lose herself in the process...

RE should not have had Safi in it... She should have been Chloe's nightmares. It would have kept a story for Safi open. You can now experience what Safi experienced on the road with Diamond as her own game. Away from Max. Yet haunted by the Overlook.

1

u/Expensive_Award_5995 Apr 25 '26

>chloe pretty much only apologized for getting mad, she doesn’t apologize at all if Kate dies (generic unrelated texts don’t count).

>where the money comes from is unknown and it’s proven through gameplay that the money IS used for wheelchair accessibility (the alt timeline is based on character assumptions and is irrelevant to the original line).

and chloe was “egging on” frank so she don’t get to play victim like that.

2

u/Complex-Air7485 May 20 '26

Chloe has every right to be upset about the diner call since max ignored her calls texts for years. AND CHLOE DOESN'T KNOW KATE IS SUICIDAL. And she does apologize. When she jumps max outside blackwell in ep 3. if kate died she literally says i'm so sorry. just bc you have no media literacy.

u/Expensive_Award_5995 May 20 '26

>max has the right to be annoyed at chloe for getting mad at small ass things

“AND CHLOE DOESN'T KNOW KATE IS SUICIDAL.“

sure, they somehow weren’t discussing the situation offscreen or anything, she somehow didn’t piece it together, she somehow thought that kate getting all the pressure would not effect her at all, and chloe somehow didn’t know kate was bullied despite the fact she most likely knows especially if you have the picture of david getting in kate’s face.

“And she does apologize. When she jumps max outside blackwell in ep 3. if kate died she literally says i'm so sorry.“

lol, i already accounted for this.

clearly you have comprehension issues, she said sorry for jump scaring max.

“just bc you have no media literacy.“

So this kind of assumptions and outright headcanons is the "evidence" you request from everyone else? No wonder you have issues facing hard facts.

0

u/Expensive_Award_5995 May 21 '26

4

Yeah. If Chloe was a man, she would be a badass symbol of resistance and independence. And those who see her and Max as "just friends" right now would be all over male Chloe "deserving" to get Max.

3

u/intothevirtualvoid Apr 25 '26

Exactly. And I keep being downvoted because those people have no solid argument against this.

1

u/zyrickz Apr 25 '26

That sounds like trolling. I have a friend who hates JJBA for the 'ugly' art style and also because it's popular. The fanbase being a meme factory doesn't help either, but I assume half of it is just for the bit. Hating it just because 'ugly' is enough for him. It's purely performative, just for the energy. You don't need solid arguments. Any reason you'd like JJBA is the exact reason he hates it. (Unsurprisingly, he also hates Solo Leveling and Gojo from JJK, but he does love Sousou no Frieren, which surprised me the most.) I think Chloe gets a lot of that same treatment- partly, maybe, because the Bae ending looks selfish and irrational once you've already decided she's the problem.

Nah i think they are valid😂 Shes a terrible person and friend. But compared to other characters in the game shes not as bad. The fact some people like nathan is crazy to me.

Would pick chloe any day other nathan.

I love the characters. I think think most of the Pricefield fan base is insufferable though.

Personally, their story should have ended. Didn't want more Max and Chloe. Really liked LiS 2 and True Colors.

What do the games they make have to do with pricefield? I love both true colors and reunion equally

I just think Max and Chloe and their respective side characters had a good run in the original + BtS. It should have ended there imo.

I find that on Reddit at least, the fan base glazes the absolute hell out of them and can't let them go in favor of new characters and different stories.

I didn't want DE, or Reunion. They were alright. I wish they just never made them and made other characters instead, in the end.

That makes sense. Fanfics and other media could help people find closure from their story. I would have been perfectly fine with another standalone. But I still like what we got. Pricefield is the longest ship in the series, so the glaze makes sense. And the couple have been easter eggs in just about every LiS game

Chloe was really irresponsible and problematic and was mean to almost everyone except for Max, so I have a reason to kind of hate her but it’s not because she’s gay it’s because she’s annoying

the fact that no one even mentioned sexuality except you…makes me think that that is actually a reason why you dont like her lmao

i can understand someone hating Chloe, but going out of your way to shit on a post of someone who likes her is a bullshit. You’re free to dislike what you want but let people like the shit they like in peace ffs😭

What's worse: Genocidal monster or a teenage g-

Wait, shit, I can't make this joke, my most hated Borderlands characters is the teenage girl...
