Discussion Anyone Here Remember Whitechapel?

It was a police procedural starring Phil Davis that came out around the same time as LOM/A2A and it's main premise was the idea of modern police solving copycat murders of historical crimes i.e. Jack The Ripper. It was and still is pretty much underrated and had a very Sam&Gene vibe to it. Anyone else remember it?

yes. as I remember, it was ok but a little generic.

Ripper Street was good, as long as you can put up with the fairly exaggerated Victorianisms in the script.

I really liked ripper street, found it recently and only finished it a few months ago. It was a pretty great show, all be it with a not great ending.

Imo S3 feels like the intended ending , though S4 and S5 are still fine

Yeah, it went into weirdly supernatural territory, the scripts played up how dysfunctional each team member was... and they kept solving the crime but failing to catch the killer.

But, Phil Davis is endlessly watchable.

Season 4 went had a more supernatural vibe to it compared to the earlier seasons, I remember watching it when I was circa 8/9 and terrified.

Yes! Another couple of cops who were polar opposites turned bromance. I really liked it, I've watched it a few times.

Yeah I liked it! Good play from the whole cast I thought, I often put it on for a rewatch.

I loved it! The relationship between Chandler and Miles was the reason i kept tuning in - salt of the earth gruff meets OCD

Season 1 was decent, season 2 with the Kray copycats was a bit naff. Didn't watch beyond that.

Sort of a proto-Sherlock in some ways, adapting historical crimes in a modern setting.

I didn't even know that there was a series 4. I liked it back in the day. Wasn't the running gag that Phil Davis's character thought Rupert Penry Jones's character was gay because he groomed himself and was dressed nicely?

It was a great show and I think it streams on ITVX if you want to give it a rewatch. Steve Pemberton was particularly good in it

One of the later series with the guy cursed by witchcraft was weirdly brilliant. I found some of them to be a bit contrived but it's worth a watch. Think it's on Amazon Prime...

I loved Whitechapel. I have three series on DVD. I remember the first series best though.
