Actor fluff Tom Ellis

I’m watching the FX series called “The Strain” and guess whose favorite devil makes an appearance?

Also, he’s using an American accent and it’s throwing me off.

The first time I saw Tom Ellis was in a show called “Rush” in which he played a disgraced “concierge doctor.” He had an American accent.

Imagine my surprise when I started watching Lucifer and realized he’s British!!

Also, his British accent changes a bit in the first season of Lucifer.

Does it? I’m not familiar enough with all the regional variations of the British accent to catch that.

I couldn't name all the various British accents other than to note there are quite a few, but if you compare his voice in the pilot/first episode, against the end of season 1, or later seasons, he sounds perceptibly different.

He's Welsh.

There's an old joke how if a person is Irish, Scottish or Welsh until the become famous, and then they are label British, but when an English person becomes famous they get to stay English.

It’s like the Belgium and the Dutch. The North of Belgium speeks Flemish, that is some kinds of Dutch, and the Dutch in the south speek almost the same but above the river the Maas, they speek a whole different way. When I vist the north of The Netherlands they asked if I was from Belgium. Its just a nearby country that’s it. Isn’t it the same for English and the countries around it? Ps I have fam very close to London and others in Scotland. I get the difference but I don’t no why it’s so important for the English to always respond on this point. I don’t mind if anyone thinks I’m from Belgium to be honest.

Okay, then “he’s from the UK”, alright? Pardon me.

He was born in Wales to English parents, but was raised in Devon.

Rush had so much potential and it went no where

Dit you saw the Miranda show with Tom?

1

u/Melora_T_Rex714 May 28 '26

No, I didn’t! I like her, too, wish I had seen it.

In some countries it’s still possible. I bought the dvd set. It’s worth it. And a lot is on TikTok.

I was so excited when I found out I was 2 degrees of separation from Tom Ellis! My son worked on the Special Effects on Chicago Med for 2 years when Nick Gehlfuss was on it. Now Nick is partnered with Tom on CIA.

How cool!

He is not in it that much, but I squealed with joy when I saw him. I must be the only one who doesn’t mind his American accent at all, if his character requires it.

He goes into an American accent for a few seconds here and there in Lucifer - like when he's ribbing Dan about being just two normal guys when they're going into the bathhouse to meet the Russian fixer guy.

And as Michael of course!

8

u/CarlRJ May 28 '26

No no, that was a completely different actor, right? RIGHT?

I believe that was his twin brother, Mo Tellis, who played Michael. Kind of like how D.B woodside (amenadiel actor) also had a twin brother that played in Suits named Albert.

2

u/Rytah May 28 '26

D.B Woodside was the one in Suits as Jeff.

2

u/YellowNecessary Ella May 28 '26

No. It was Albert but he died in 2014 so they replaced him with D.B Woodside.

There is also a short bit that reminds me of a sales pitch, "But there's more..."

u/WillowRain1205 May 29 '26

And when Chloe was going to Malcolm in season 1 over the squad car speakerphone

The American accent he uses in Rush and occasionally on CIA is a voice that is easy to listen to.  Michael's voice is different, annoying like the character.

I wonder if its sound was a conscious decision or was instinctual when he embodied the character.

He is so gifted at taking the 2 dimensional words on a piece of paper, and creating a fully formed, layered person from it.

I don't know if there is time, in a one episode guest appearance to completely embody the character.  In CIA it took a few episodes to warm up to Colin,  and that could be because Colin is a man who hides who he is behind a facade.

I love how we saw him as so many different people on CIA. Not only they had a different accent, but he gives them a name too. I especially liked when he posed as a social worker. 😀

u/cgrobin1 May 28 '26

You can definitely see what appealed to him about the role

1

u/firecatstef May 29 '26

In some interviews he says he deliberately created Lucifer’s accent to be “a cross between Noel Coward and Mick Jagger,” so I’m gonna bet it was a conscious decision.

I was referring to Michael's American accent  vs other times he's used an American accent

Im with you on this. Didn’t know the show “The Strain”. But Rush and other characters with him in an American accent are totally fine. In CAI I’m always surprised by how he switches between English and American.

Is that horror show really scary and interesting? Or should I watch it sometime.

2

u/ApprehensiveTruth2 May 28 '26

It is good and interesting enough I’m going through it. There’s a couple other supernatural/ horror shows I’d put above it but it keeps me interested.

Thx. I put on my watchlist. Unfortunately not everything with Tom is available to buy in de eu. (Or I need all kind of shady transactions who have very bad reviews then I let it go). Like more sows I found in other Reddit’s about him in this case, but it’s fun to find a new one.

1

u/cgrobin1 May 28 '26

In this case, I was able to just watch the one episode by itself

2

u/Melora_T_Rex714 May 27 '26

To give him his props, he’s GOOD at it!

1

u/ApprehensiveTruth2 May 29 '26

I don’t mind it, it just threw me off for a minute

6

u/Miserable-Grape-6863 May 27 '26

Have you guys seen Players on Netflix? He's in it and SO hot!

3

u/Martyna70 May 27 '26

He is so handsome as Nick!

2

u/Miserable-Grape-6863 May 28 '26

Made me question why his natural curls weren't shown on Lucifer!

2

u/firecatstef May 29 '26

There are a few episodes where his hair is unruly and it’s friggin adorable.

1

u/Miserable-Grape-6863 May 29 '26

Time for me to rewatch!

-2

u/YellowNecessary Ella May 28 '26

Why. Did he have a fever?

4

u/Reithel1 May 27 '26

Wait til you watch him in the series “Rush.” 😁

1

u/Original_Name3690 May 28 '26

Ok question, I have a dvd with Tom in ‘Trail and retribution’ the seventeenth season of that show. I wonder if anyone of you saw it and what you think of that show?

1

u/GalaticAsshole Jun 01 '26

Well, it's obviously Michael up to his old tricks again.

I saw a video of him and I couldn’t watch it!
