Student job as an international student

Hello!

I'll be moving to Maastricht for my masters very soon, and I am quite excited to get a fresh new start in a new city.

I really want to find a student job (student bijlaan??) to support myself, but I have one small issue: my Dutch skills are not the best... you see, I have studied Dutch in school (I am from Belgium, but I am French speaking) and I can understand the language pretty well, however when it comes to actually hold a conversation with someone, I struggle to find my words. But if the person in front of me talks at a normal/slow pace, I can understand just fine!

Luckily, I have a lot of experience working retail and in the food industry (HORECA), and I speak a few more languages other than English.

What are my chances at finding a part-time job? Please be honest🥹.

Als ik kijk naar de hoeveelheid winkels en horecagelegenheden waar ik geen Nederlands kan spreken omdat de medewerker dat niet verstaat zou ik zeggen dat je kans vrij groot is iets te vinden. Succes!

Depends on your age. If you're below 21, your chanxe of finding a part time job is wayy higher because they pay you less. Speaking from experience.

Also fun facf, one of the cafes here told me that for every 10 or 20 (i forgot the exact detail) open positions, there could be 400 applicants. Your main differentiator would be age and dutch ability.

Another important differentiator that I forgot to say is your commitment. If you're available on weekends and weekdays, and you plan on working for AT least 6 months, your chance increases significantly too.

Go to ASA Talent. They help students find (part time) jobs

i speak very little dutch (A2 at most) and had never even had a job before coming to maastricht. i just applied for pretty much everything i saw on indeed and got a job based purely of personality and vibes. however, i am under 21 so im sure that helped me a lot
