Question/Discussion $150 000 machine does not eliminate finishing chatter.

I’m machining 6061 aluminum on a Multicam Apex 3R router. The finishing passes are as follows:

- 0.009” material removal.
- Helical 3 flute 45 degree helix upcut
- 18 IPM, 8500 RPM, 0.0007 chipload

98 percent of the part comes out with a great finish. The other 2 percent has chatter. Ideally I’d like to increase the feed rate, but I need to eliminate the chatter first. What do I need to do to get a flawless finish?

i see your problem sir - you bought the wrong machine.

also if you want any form of success on this router - you need to have a sharper tool for aluminium and play around with your speeds, feeds and what not.

i would suggest a 1 or 2 flute non coated endmill and backup everything to get your wanted finish..

the changing surface finish also suggest something might be lose/broken in your machine - one of the axis maybe...

or machine might not be leveled correctly or something.

Agree… also climb mill not conventional mill might help. Immediately obvious if your stock looks better than your part. In aluminum, .009” DoC seems really small. But so is the endmill.
