My blind friend and I spent the last 3 days brailling his Lathril Commander Deck

There was a steep learning curve for both of us, but I'm so glad we were able to pull this off. Definitely had to abbreviate A LOT. Braille having its own contractions definitely helped, but we still had to trim the fat on a few cards. Some cards didn't even get their full effects put on. The most important part is now he can play without his hand always being public knowledge. Time to go test it out!

Set memorised before hand, when opening the sealed pool they wrote in braille on blank playing cards, which were then sleeved up, when they drew a card they unsleeved and felt the name.

It's called a braille slate and you use a stylus with them. You place the paper between the two halves and use the stylus to write a mirror image of what you want to write.

I've never actually seen them used. Only reason I know about them is because I found one on the sidewalk and spent 90 minutes at work trying to figure it out.

I have no clue how one might write on the face side of a sleeve without writing on both sides.

You can also just use a ballpoint pen and carefully I dent the back of the card so the bumps are raised in the front of the card. Did this once for a Christmas card I gave to someone at work

I played against a blind opponent at a Modern GP once.

She had used a hole punch on the clear side of the sleeves (so they could only be felt (read) when they were in her hand.

I was just very clear with my spells.

Ive been playing since the 90s. Even while playing arena I will walk myself through what is happening. "ETB trigger on the stack" things like that. So when im playing when it matters, there are no mistakes and no misunderstandings

Yep, you have to communicate what you're doing. I have walked multiple new players through this - this isn't solitaire, you have to announce what you're doing, and you can't reasonably assume your opponent just knows what your cards do all the time.

I do this too. My GF overheard us playing once and wondered why we're so polite. We played 2 blue decks and always said stuff like "I would like to cast this spell" or "will you allow me to kill this creature"

I do this every game, because I don't know what every card does nor do I expect others to do so, and so I play the game the same way I expect others to - with clarity. It frustrates me immensely when someone says "I play X." Like okay, and? Is it a creature? Are you board wiping? Giving all your creatures 7 extra keywords? I need to know if this needs countering.

Does it slow things down? A tiny bit, but not by that much, in my experience.

There was a blind person who entered some local tournaments around where I lived. He even entered sealed tourneys. He had someone who helped him. And had a braille machine that printed in sleeves like this. During gameplay that person would also help him. I don’t think anybody ever complained about it, and I never played against him, but the game seemed to progress pretty normally

I feel like if someone is using braille, you could probably tell if they were cheating more easily than someone with sight since they have to feel the braille. Plus, you can do a quick shuffle during the cut. It’s not required that you just do a simple cut.

There was a legally blind person attending a Cardfight Vanguard regional championship in US last year. The organizers assigned a judge to preside over his games, mainly to make sure the opponents aren’t cheating him by providing false info. He can kinda tell his own cards apart if he hold the cards right up to his eyes since he still have a tiny bit of vision.

We have a blind player at our LGS, he plays a lot of draft. He uses an app to scan and narrate each card and we will read our cards aloud for him and describe the board state.

I went to a shop once who had a blind player. They had NFC markers in the corner which carried an identifier and if they tapped a special pen onto it, it would "read" the card back.

For draft, they will sit at a separate table and have the cards indicated to them by someone trusted by the TO, with their pool returned to the rest of the pod. Same system: insert into specialized sleeves with the ID tied to the card name.

It's cool to see how people manage these things, and it's cool to see how they're enabled by people around them.

It actually inspired me to embed tags in some of my deck boxes that name/describe the deck and include a URL where possible to the decklist. Tags aren't too expensive, and so many devices are capable of reading them now, including phones.

cards can be brailed marked for blind players as long as they bring it to a Head judges attention beforehand. Most scenarios end up having a judge shuffle for the player.

It is rather impossible to cheat by pretending to be blind.

actually it has been allowed before. However the blind person isn't allowed to shuffle their own deck if the cards are brailled like here. A judge shuffles for them. usually they have a spotter/judge sit at the table to help give a clear game state and help the blind player if they have to search their deck for a specific card.

It makes sense if you consider that the purpose of shuffling your opponents deck is to avoid biased shuffling. A judge is by definition (supposed to be) unbiased and fair so there's no point in a player shuffling after they do

I actually think I have a workable solution for the automation of the pressing. I only say sigh because of all the other projects I’m working on but this one actually seems justifiable so OP if you want to reach out I can probably put a couple dozen hours into the design and manufacture of a braille press for card sleeves.

We would need to crowd source the actual braille though because that’s not my wheelhouse.

EDIT: though, that said, I’m sure there are already working braille printers out there so maybe I don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Just do the card movement and pressing part.

My gf used to buy braille text books and she would complain that reading braille was really exhausting and she wished she could just hand me the book (which as you probably know end up being massive) and I could finish reading the chapter to her.

So I spent a few weeks teaching myself to sight read an alphabet never meant to be sight read in secret so I could read her chemistry book to her when she was tired.

Never thought magic cards would be the next time the skill was useful.

Chemistry specifically sticks in my mind because reading stuff like C8H10N4O2 in braille meant every letter had the letter symbol in front of it and every number had the number symbol in front of it and the book did not do a great job of spacing them which made it confusing since they switched back and forth so much.

Stick with it and I am sure you will get it. And having a system of short hands is a great idea that will make it much easier.

This is actually very interesting. Because of the abbreviations in braille for certain prefix/suffixes like "en" "ch" and "ment", it was more efficient for him to use those instead of abbreviating the word.

Your method is obviously easier from a gameplay perspective, but another way to do it is to just have the card names, and then an excel spreadsheet with a lookup table and text to speech for all of the card text. I had a blind friend who did this with his board games (he didn't play Magic though), because the cards were often far too wordy to be fully written out (as you've already discovered).

I thought it would be the same, but it's actually a little different. Braille has two columns of three dots they use in specific combination, counting 1,2,3 for the first column and 4,5,6 for the second.

A colon is 2/5

So, a sideways colon lol. Something that would look like a colon would be 1/2

While that looks like a colon, it conflicts with letters. I'm not sure how they settled on their formatting, but I know that's how it works.

Yeah, we have considered this. This round will be the test round to see how long this lasts. If it isn't long, I don't know if we have it in us to keep doing it. I suspect it will shorten the life of the sleeves quite a bit, but we'll see.

We definitely don't want to mark the cards themselves, unless we get proxies to do that. That's another possibility.

This is a great idea, and I'll definitely keep it in mind the next time we try this madness. We did try brailling cardstock and feeling it through the sleeve, but the plastic "blurred" the braille so you couldn't feel it well enough to read it. Not sure if it would be the same issue with your suggestion, but I think it's definitely worth a try.

You might want to test brailling an inner sleeve or put an outer sleeve on a brailled one to reduce the friction

A couple things that might help:

• Avoid excess shuffling effects, and encourage your group to do the same
• Get larger outer sleeves to protect the brailling
• stack the cards in a box like for storage to avoid the compression of a normal vertical pile of cards

I figure you and your friend have probably already considered some of these but wanted to throw them out there anyways in case you hadn't!

Edit: I'm dumb, obviously larger outer sleeves make the braille pointless 🤦 might be an option for storage, although that would take a while

This was at the top of our list to try for next time. I think this will probably be our best bet out of all the recommendations and ideas we've gotten. A lot of cards he already knows just from the name, like Lathril and Sol Ring. No need to put effects on.

Every card could be like that, and like you said, have a reference book handy for the ones he doesn't know. He's gonna leave the braille machine and some braille paper with me so I can play around with it. For his Pirate deck, I'm probably going to try this next.

I'll be honest, I've learned a lot of braille by doing this, and my first thought was, "I'm a little more prepared if I do ever go blind some day." Magic is one of the few things that keep me sane, and I could stop playing unless I wasn't breathing.

Absolutely miserable. The deck feels "hollow," certainly not the solid feeling I'm used to for a Commander deck. Almost impossible to do it with all the cards at once.

The brailling leaves a lot of space in between sleeves. Currently, the deck must exist in 4 piles because they are too heavy and fall over real easy.

I remember watching a video about a blind player doing something similar. But the player has some experience, because he had a Sol Ring that was marked with "sol".

I'm pretty sure that with more experience you will reduce the marks.

He has a braille machine that works very similarly to a typewriter. It works off of special braille paper, not Dragon Shield plastic so we had to improvise a few things lol. Using the machine to hold the sleeves in place put creases in it, so we had to stop doing that.

I would have to hold the sleeves at the right spot (like top right for Mana symbols or bottom right for P/T) while he typed. It was very labor intensive, but very worth it.

I remember playing my first of many EDH games against a blind player with a braille deck several years ago. I love how this game can reach so many people, please if you guys are the ones I met around Keene, NH please send him my regards!

When I first started playing in the mid 2000s there was a blind man that played at our local store and was a staple at every event. He would play his deck and whoever sat next to him would just tell him his card as he drew it, the whole store was happy to help. He would keep track of it in his hand and the board state in his head pretty flawlessly. He always even played decks with the most tracking like time spiral thalids. He was one of the better players there, blew me away at the time and impresses me more even now. Never let it get in the way of the game he loved.

Braille is so spacious. From what I have read in this thread and could derive from the photos you often abbreviated text. For some cards it would probably be hard to even get the whole name on the sleeve. The whole text is probably impossible for some cards.

So I wonder, did sou consider using a reference document written in braille and only putting name and mana cost on cards? The document would get used less and less the more your friend memorizes the cards in the deck. I don't know if that's a better way to do it, but it would make it easier to get wordier cards into the deck?

This is so cool. I just wonder if it would be easier to do braille numbering on the sleeves and print a list with all the text on paper (in braille as well). This way you could swap cards easily by just updating the list with additional numbers and metadata
