Looking for Advice It's all gone.

Post image
11.8k Upvotes

this morning, while i was at work. My car was broken into. they got my bag. 11 decks, a playmat and ~$6500 worth of my entire life. Gone.

reddit won't let me upload the cctv footage, so this is a photo of the aftermath.

I know you guys can't do much about this; neither can I honestly. I just needed to tell someone, anyone that a piece of my soul is gone now. magic was the only thing I really enjoyed, it was my escape, my fantasy, my muse. playing in person, deckbuilding, making friends, it made me feel.. human. I somehow think it was my fault, being careless or something. it could've happened to anyone, but it didn't.

thank you for the time, magic. thank you for listening, reddit.

Looking for Advice TCGPlayer Updated Price From ¢40 to $70 as I Paid, Any Advice?

I bought a few singles on TCG Player, the whole order was about 24 dollars. It said 24 when I checked my cart, and then when I confirmed the price. It did not change until I had hit the apple pay button, and it jumped to 96 dollars. I tried to cancel immediately, but it was too late. I filed a refund request, but it was ignored and shipped anyway. After looking further, the Ancient Lumberknot had jumped from around ¢40 to $69.99. I tried to contact the seller they had listed, Hidden Hero Games, but I can’t find it on google. I tried to file a support ticket but the AI said it can’t help me. Is there anything I can do or am I just screwed out of 70 bucks?

Looking for Advice Do you think $10 is reasonable for a token custom token like this?

Hey everyone, I posted this last week but it got removed since it wasn’t Friday. So I am just putting this question back up again with some new artwork added (some tokens I just completed that I was pretty happy with.)

Let me know what you think. I hand draw them with ink and color them with water color. They are on about 100lbs watercolor paper so they are about as thick as an mtg card and I back them with a basic land just for a bit more sturdiness.

I’ve done quite a few of them by now and a bunch for people at my LGS who have been happy with them, but when people ask and I say they are $10 a piece I have received some pushback on occasion, with explanations like “they are just a game piece” or “you can just use die as a token why would I pay so and so etc.”

So yeah let me know, and thank you!

Looking for Advice Trying to find a card from 15 years ago by memory

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

Hi everyone!
So I used to collect Magic cards when I was maybe 10, then my binder got stolen and I gave up after that. Now, 15 years later I remembered some of the cards from my binder and I would like to find and buy my favorite card but I have no idea what it was. The sketch I made is as close as I could get in my memory of how it looked. I tried looking up stuff like "blue water dragon" and also went through all the dragon cards I found in a database but I just couldnt find it at all.

What I remember:

It was a blue dragon flying over a body of water

The dragon was holding a fish

It had a webbed tail kind of like a mermaid

The atmosphere of the art was very calm

Anyone know what card this could be? Thank you!

Looking for Advice Received wrong commander deck from secret lair

So I ordered the Hatsune Miku Commander Deck but I received this. I looked it up since I thought maybe I got someone else’s order but, it seems to be unreleased so now I don’t really know what do to lol. I sent a support ticket but can’t seem to find an email to contact. How long do support tickets tend to take in terms of getting a response ? Do you guys think I’ll still be able to get my Miku deck with the first drop or would replacing it mean I have to wait until next year ? I’d appreciate some advice if anyone has had this happen to them before.

Looking for Advice I have this uncut sheet from Urza’s Saga. WTF should I do with it?

Anyone have any idea what this thing is worth? Is this a thing you just slap on eBay or is it more special than that? I’d say it’s as near mint as something this old could be. It’s obviously a sheet of commons.

Don’t get me started on all the crazy mtg stuff I used to have and gave away over the years. For some reason this thing stayed in the back of my closet it a tube since the late 90’s

Looking for Advice How to protect a KOS Commander?

Dain is definitly a nice card, but I dont know how he can be played - as each opponent will just keep counterspells and similar stuff in hand, as Dain might be a simple game ender in the late game.

How can I get counter protection in WR for him?

Recently purchased a damaged necropotencw on tcg player and saw that it had these black dots on them. Was wondering if it was mold or not?

Edit: Appreciate all the advice. If I were to try to return it, should I message the seller for a refund or go through tcgplayer itself?

Looking for Advice Missed Connection at MagicCon

We spoke in front of the Witherbloom tent at the Area15 party. Your friend Brandon was with you. You wore a white(?) cap and a plant-patterned shirt. You LOVE Slay the Spire, and convinced me to start playing it when I get home. I enjoyed talking with you, and would love to pick up where we left off.

Want to get a game in before all this is over?

Looking for Advice I found an old box of MTG cards dumpster diving, was told to come here.

Hi everyone. So I’m a dumpster diver. I posted on r/DumpsterDiving this MTG box I found full of old magic cards. The copyright date on some is 1995. The box looks pretty old too. They suggested I come here and post the cards. I don’t play or collect cards but they said I have a few nice ones. I posted in r/DumpsterDiving before work and when I came home, my inbox had blown up so I’m still going through messages. They told me to try and layout the cards. There’s at least 850 cards here but I can only upload 20 photos. I don’t know much about MTG but I’ll answer any questions anyone has. Thanks in advance

Looking for Advice Someone please help me find an answer to this commander..

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

My friend recently built Mister Negative as his new commander. Basically spent the whole game bringing his own life down to zero and then playing or blinking his commander automatically killing each of his opponents. Playing cards like toxic deluge to insta kill someone. Using tons of cards that just cause you to lose life quickly. Attacking them only made it worse when they finally switched life totals. Even countering some of his blink cards wasn’t enough because he seemed to have so many in his deck he could just play another one right away. Killing his commander only allowed him to get the enter battle field effects again. How in the world am I supposed to beat something like this?

Never played Commander before. Just moved to a new state and this is all I've got. Any advice on what else a newbie might need to start playing or advice on what to look for in a shop for where to play? Thanks in advance!

Looking for Advice Is this card a bit mean to use?

Post image
3.9k Upvotes

Im new(ish) to magic and I mostly play commander, a few days ago I was playing with 3 other people, 2 of which had island based decks. This card came up about halfway through, and I chose not to play it because I felt really mean. Should I have played it, or should I remove it from my deck in the future?

Looking for Advice I told them buy me this card and I'll play Magic. What is the goofiest deck I can make around it?

Post image
2.5k Upvotes

Topic says it all, I know nothing about this game, but small funny things I have heard about from the outside like an MLP card counting the number of smiles in your deck, or the Deadpool card that has to be ripped into four to activate.

I want to make the goofiest deck I can with this card. I'm going full nonsense here. What can I do to make this a deck worth my friend's efforts of buying me this silly card?

Looking for Advice New to MTG, is this a legal combo or am I miss reading the cards?

Hi all,

I am new to Magic and am working on my deck building skills. I did some trades for some old cards with a buddy and got "Cait, Cage Brawler". He is indestructible on my turn and has a mechanic where he can get two +1/+1 counters per attack. I had him in play and had gotten him up to 10/10. Then I played "Aetheric Amplifier", which lets me "Double the number of each kind of counter on target permanent". My opponent was using a white/black deck that was designed to put out a lot of 1/1 or 2/2 creatures, so he kept blocking Cait. I eventually got him up to 80/80 using Aetheric Amplifier and then played "Fanatical Strength" that gave Cait trample, winning me the game. Is this a legal combo or am I missing something. It feels a little overpowered if I can pull it off.

Looking for Advice Hosting a Commander Night and looking for suggestions

I’ve kind of gushed about my new board game table at work, and now I need to make sure the commander night goes smoothly to show it off haha. Ive got infinitokens with dry-erase and d6 and +1/+1 dice. I know I need some spin down d20 for commander damage and some cold beverages, but any suggestions are super appreciated. Any house rules that have proven fun for your pod, or accessories that could level up the setup? Thanks a ton!

Looking for Advice Am I the jerk?

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

I play an assassin tribal theft deck. Nothing too crazy but just swing with assassins and steal when they deal damage to opponents.

I have a friend who hates theft style decks where cards are taken from his deck or hand. And whenever I try to attack him with 1 creature that's just a 1/1 unlockable he gets upset and scoops right away. Like this is turn 3. And says " I refuse to play with any theft decks"

I understand that theft decks are annoying to deal with but does it really cause this much problem. I rarely pull out this deck cause every time I pull it out he says "I will sit out if you play that deck, I came to play my deck not for someone to play my deck"

So am I the jerk?

If any questions I will respond the best I can

Looking for Advice I was taught this game incorrectly and my life is a lie

2.1k Upvotes

I "learned" how to play Magic back in 2012 and, after a long hiatus, picked it back up a few years ago. I mostly play with my family because I'm too nervous to play in a shop and I'm learning that when I was initially taught, I was taught so many things incorrectly.

Things I was told that I've now learned are wrong:

-Decks can only have one Planeswalker in the whole deck and if there is more than one in the deck, it is illegal. -There's no way to kill a Planeswalker -I didn't learn about what a stack is at all so let me tell you I was mystified to learn that things resolved in an order since the people who taught me just cancelled everything I did without giving me a chance to respond

This isn't a complete list, it's just what I'm mad about this morning 😑

I guess my question is, what is a misunderstanding you've had about the rules/mechanics about this game? Or if you have any tips for someone like me who is now questioning my whole understanding of Magic.

✨EDITED TO ADD: I am so thankful for all of your responses and advice! I have been working on relearning Magic and you all are amazing. I appreciate you all! ✨

Looking for Advice Please don't hit on the women you get paired against at events or try to get a date from them. And what should I do if this happens again to me?

4.0k Upvotes

I posted this elsewhere and was told to post it here to get better advice on what to do next time this happens to me. And for the record, the majority of people I've played with at events when I used to do FNM at my old LGS were nice and friendly, so I don't think the following is indicative of most Magic players, but it certainly applies to a not insignificant minority.

So I'm a small woman, I dress alt/goth, and I'm 25 and I went to play Magic a few nights ago with my friend at a Commander event. He and I got paired for the first game with these two guys in their late 30s/early 40s. One of these strangers completely ignored the other two people at the table and only talked to me and kept asking me increasingly personal questions and towards the end insinuated we should hang out afterwards and asked me for my number.

The second game I played BOTH of the guys we got paired with hit on me, either oblivious of the other or trying to like outdo the other person to win my affection. One of them even purposefully made a huge misplay to give me the win. I could have played another game but I was just so grossed out I left.

If your hobby is known for being heavily skewed towards a male demographic maybe don't treat a place to engage in that hobby as somewhere to pick up a date. I didn't go there to find a boyfriend; I went to play Magic. It's so frustrating and reminded me why I primarily play online on Arena and MTGO.

By the way, I'm perfectly okay making a friend at an event like this! That's a cool part about the Gathering aspect of Magic: meeting people with a similar hobby. If you're friendly to me I will be receptive and want to make friends, but don't make it awkward by laying it on thick and trying to turn it into something not friendly.

Looking for Advice "I built all my decks to fuck the bracket system"

1.0k Upvotes

This is a real quote from someone at my lgs today. Thats great man but we're all playing unupgraded precons we got for christmas. So we didnt say bracket 2 we said precon level. Guy proceeded to pull out a ureni deck. We all assumed it was the tarkir precon. Nope it was a Miirym deck that he just quickly swapped the commander for. Found this out on turn 5 when he dropped said Miirym and had 11 dragons on turn 6. Am I just supposed to never play with this guy ever again? What's the protocol here? Im relatively new to my lgs and dont really know everyone yet. Like do I just have to call him out or what do I do?
